[News] Why Tony Jefferson And Eric Weddle Can Be The NFL's Best Safety Duo

34 posts in this topic

Some pundits have pointed to both Ravens as being more in the mold of in-the-box safeties. Jefferson says people just haven't seen him patrolling the deep middle yet, and the Ravens believe both can be versatile, making opponents guess. Here's how they'll work together.

"Physicality" is what I see and Love out of Tony Jefferson! Welcome to the Flock TJ!

I agree. That's what stands out to me as well. He has the passion for the game and actually wraps up his tackles old school, just like I like it. Now that he's paired with his buddy, they could really wreak some havoc. Time will tell but it sure looks good on paper right now.

Lawrence Guy's gone to New England.

Can't help thinking it's gonna hurt us more than it would seem...

So we have Kaufusi, Urban, Carl Davis, Willie Henry, B.Williams, M. Pierce and Timmy Jernigan rotating on the D-line with Suggs, Judon, Z. Smith and Correa rotating at OLB. I think if we add a pass rusher in the draft and the youngsters play hard, we'll be good.

Idk how to read this.. bad news or good. Nfl trade rumor, Sidney Jones top 15 projected player and top 2 CB in draft appears to have suffered a significant leg injury at pro day.
We knows Ravens like him, bad news if serious how can you take him in tge 1st round?

Good? Maybe you get him a round or 2 later

Pass rusher is key. DB's are only as good as the pass rush. Of course there are exceptions with a specially talented DB but they're few and far between.

Best safety combo? Here we go with the reckless predictions. Can we see them play together first? Besides, no one looks that great when playing in Dean Pees defense.

Ya, you gotta feel for Sidney, must be heartbreaking for him. Oh well, that which doesn't kill us, only makes us stronger right?
He'll slide down in the draft for sure but how far and who'd be willing to take a chance before knowing for sure how he'll heal from it?

We need to find a way to draft Hasaan Reddick in the 2nd round, he is Z Orr with more upside

No doubt he will be missed but we are deep on the DL and we couldn't afford any more contracts of that magnitude. NE gave him a nice sized contract.

Jefferson/Weddle look to be as good or better than what we had with Webb and Weddle at Safety. So its an upgrade looking at it now.

The CB position will be the key to keeping the Safeties on track. If they have to worry about a weak side like last year it certainly will handcuff them.

Stay with the plan and get a strong, young CB at #1 and hopefully Smith stays healthy. Young looked great last year and I expect big things from him this year.
He will be best in the nickle but he can play the dominant corner position. Picking up some additional veteran support wont hurt if a bargain presents itself later in Pre-season. Undrafted FA , cap casualties and rookies from last year are all possibilities.

Keeping Levine also strengthens nickle and dime packages, he is an underestimated, and certainly earned his way back on the team.

basically its all about
Corner, Corner, Corner!

When I look at Weddle I think of a center fielder at this point in his career. I don't think of someone running the alley ready to lay the wood like a Dawan Landry, Ihedigbo, or Bernard Pollard. I hope Jefferson can bring some sort of physical presence that will keep receivers and RB's head on a swivel. We haven't had that thumper in a very long time.

If you want him then start thinking trading down a few spots in the first and taking him right there because I assure you he will be long gone before we pick in the 2nd.

I would much more prefer more passes defensed and INTs than big hits from the secondary. They will still make some noise as well.

Smells like good competition brewing for snaps. Who wants to win a starting role.

That's what I'm thinking. I hope we can get him in the third. He was a top 10 pick imo before the injury

No way. So glad we didn't shell out that money to an average player. Plus helps with comp picks. I know what you mean, but I don't see it with Guy

I hope he doesn't turn out like Lewis.

LOL. This guy will be a top 5 Safety next year and make the pro bowl. Easily imo. No way he turns out anything like Lewis. Not even close. Lewis was never a standout player and nobody really even wanted him in FA. We just thought it was a "cheap" fix that we could bridge the gap with for a little bit I think. If we add a Legit corner to the other 4 members of our secondary, we'll be in for a treat. Barnett in the first and a corner in the second, or corner in the first and then pass rush and the Ravens Defense will be back

If he falls to the second and we do land him then it would be great news but that's a big if and a lot of luck is involved so don't coins on it lol.

until that happens, any player projected to go in the top 20 getting hurt or off field trouble is bad news.it simply decreases the possibility of a top 10 talent falling to the Ravens at 16

Unfortunately he won't be able to play at all this year so I don't see a team taking him until at least the 3rd round. I wouldn't mind him and Jake Butt (TE) both are very talented players slipping to the 3rd because of injuries. They will both be able to take a year off to heal and learn the system before stepping in and being major contributors next year.

Yup, all about the corners! You are correct. I also expect a lot from Jimmy this year, and I expect him to stay healthy. But obviously we know we can't rely on that. At least everyone better know that.
But if you compare the Webb/Weddle vs Jefferson/Weddle....it's not even close imo. Not even close to being close. And I know we should just all wait and see, but I'm so stoked. Amazing job by Weddle and the FO. Tony will be a fan favorite after week 1.
But like you're saying. We have to add a legit #1 corner to the other 4 secondary members, then the group will be absolutely elite. I think we take one in round 1, or round 2 at the latest. As much as I hate to say it, I'm really starting to see trading back as not only a likely option, but a good one depending on what we can get. Our roster is still crazy talented, and a top 3 AFC roster imo, but we have a couple holes to fill.
"A" for the FO so far in FA imo, but here's my idea on how I'd finish the offseason off
Cutt Arrington, Zuttah, and Watson
Sign Mangold
Sign Zach Brown to play next to Mosely
Between signing Jefferson, bringing back Brandon, and signing Zach to replace Orr, and others from the bench getting involved, our run defense sets records next year. NFL records, not Ravens.
Trade back in the first to pick up a couple extra picks
Select TraDevious White CB
TJ Watt OLB- pass rusher
Ju Ju Smith- big tough chain mover and red zone threat

Oline and BPA the rest of the way after that and I think we're playing NE in the Championship game for sure

If we can add one more legit CB to play opposite of Jimmy Smith, we will have one scary backfield.

Exactly. First or second round all the way. Craziest corner class I've ever seen. My favorite one just went down though. Such a bummer for Sidney. I hope we take him in the third
