Lost_in_Translation's "Going Under" Mock

Since the forum is dying I need to get a mock draft out...

So here we go.

Round One: Derek Barnett EDGE

hqdefault.jpg

Don't let his 40 time scare you. This man plays like a Raven, and had an excellent 3-cone drill. He's an admitted slow starter with a variety of pass rush moves and is awesome with his hands. If we add Claiborne, we are literally a pass rusher away from having an elite defense. Barnett can come in on day one and be a very good edge rusher. He may not be a dominant athlete, but he's a damn good football player. He's gonna produce from day one, and quite frankly I'd be ecstatic if we got him.

Round Two: Dion Dawkins

Dawkins.jpg

A name that doesn't gain much traction but he's a player I really like going forward. Good enough to be a RT or play guard, personally I think his future is a RT. He, like Wagner, is good in pass pro but has more potential as a run blocker going forward. He could also be very good at guard. But at the end of the day, he's got quick feet, and he's got a lot of power. He's a day one starter wherever we put him going forward, which is a valuable commodity. Moreover, given his quick feet he could slide over to the Left side of the line if Stanley gets hurt. He's not perfect, the Von Miller's of the world would give him a hard time, but overall, he's a player I'd love to have going forward.

Round Three: Chidobe Awuzie CB

chidobe-awuzie1.jpg

I still think we sign Morris Claiborne. But given that he and Jimmy are both injury prone. Given that Awuzie has been in every one of my mocks, I like him. He got lit up against OK-State. But one bad game shouldn't determine your whole status as a player. He plays well in zone coverage, and has good hands, and instincts. Likewise, he's a very good special teams player. He can play either the slot, or the outside. He's got fluid hips. He needs some coaching, but he's got the tools to be a quality CB in the NFL, and in his first season would do more than excel as a capable backup.

Round Three Comp: Isaiah Ford, WR

Western+Michigan+v+Virginia+Tech+rwt56CA

I don't give a damn about this guy's 40 time. I like what I see on the field, and he's a guy who has the tools to be a excellent player at the nfl level. He has excellent body control, good athleticism, good ON THE FIELD speed, fluid hips, good hands, the ability to pull of circus catches. What does he lack? Top end speed. But given that he knows how to get open with his on the field quickness, he has something this offense desperately needs. Likewise, he has all the tools to become a quality route runner at the NFL level. Sure, his 40 time is rather unappealing(4.61), but he plays faster than that on the field, and is quicker than fast. He could stand to put some weight on, but in the NFL weight room, I'd bet a pretty penny that he does. Given his poor 40 time, I would suspect that his stock takes a hit. And I'll be the first to tell you: Those teams are fools.

Round Four: Eddie Vanderdoes, DT

vanderdoes-getty.jpg

Eddie Vanderdoes was a very good college dlinemen from his true freshman year up until the very first game vs. Virginia in 2015. Then he tore his ACL and clearly didn't look the same in 2016. Ultimately, that ruined his stock, but we shouldn't discount his other tape. He's supremely talented, both as a run defender, and is capable of putting pressure on the QB despite what his stats indicate. If he can stay healthy, he has starter potential. He's the type of guy Ozzie takes a long, hard look at. Likewise, Ozzie has a tendency to take at least one Dlinemen in the draft per year. Vanderdoes is a good one if he can stay healthy, and could potentially be a valuable rotational player going forward, and potentially a starter.

Round Five: Damontae Kazee CB

Kazee has a knack for making big plays. Like Tavon, he's a small guy, and he has a tight(ish) backpedal, but very good instincts and rock solid skills in man coverage. He's a project player because of the gambles he takes but has a high ceiling who can fill in slot duties for when Jimmy inevitably goes down. Claiborne possibly as well.

Round Six: Josh Carraway, Edge

Horrible run defender, excellent athlete, and has the ability to develop into a pass rushing specialist.

Comments? Concerns? Complaints? Insults(like screw you @52520Andrew)? Well too bad!

Not bad. Perhaps Dawkins can be had later, even in this class and maybe better corner or WR with that 2nd round pick. Also, Vanderdoes feels like waste of the 4th.

I've watched Vanderdoes since his freshman year, the dude can ball if he's healthy. Which is an obvious concern, but in the fourth round I think his upside is worth the risk. I know we took a lot of dlinemen last draft, but Ozzie usually takes one per draft(which is understandable. Football is won in the trenches). I think if healthy he could be a guy who can come help put some pressure on the QB from the interior, while also being a good run defender.

I think Dawkins has a very high ceiling as a RT.  He's a guy who could play all over the line given his foot quickness and strength. You could probably also put him over at guard if you had to. I'd really like him here, and honestly he's the type of guy I could see Ozzie looking at.

It's just that I think we have enough pieces now to field pretty decent defensive front, would rather take another project or health-suspect later.

Dawkins is definitely overdrafted in 2nd, imo.

not big on dawkins in the 2nd but the obvious need and the desire for a swing guy to play either guard or RT is obvious, dont love that pick but i understand it. overall though this would be excellent.

but do you really think josh carraway is draftable? i have never seen uglier tape, i dont even know what hes doing lol. like he lines up as an edge rusher and then dances at the line, like he doesnt even go upfield, ever, doesnt even try. his plan on every pass rush snap is basically to stay near the LOS and bring a delayed blitz if the qb rolls out. his "pass rushing" looks more like playing the spy role.

I really like it. Only player I'm not in love with is Ford because in the late 3rd we might find Switzer, Godwin, Henderson who have more upside imo.

But I definitely wouldn't blink an eye.

I see Barnett as a possibility there now that Carolina has added Peppers and resigned Addison (while still need a starting CB, probably a WR and ILB), Philly desperately needs multiple corners, Indy just added Sheard so I guess they'll keep building the Oline or add a RB.

We're in a good spot to land a great edge rusher and the former vol has a realistic chance to still be there at 16.

I absolutely loved Kazee at the senior bowl practices and really like Awouzie aggressiveness on screens and generally the run D (although I couldn't find much material regarding his pass defense).

I'm a Dawkins fan as well and I'll be happy with either him or a falling 1st round worthy playmaker.

Carraway is just a fast, blind man imo. They moved him around quite a bit at TCU, even as blitzing ILB. He's a straight line speed guy and has a good bend but it's sooo inconsistent. He's even a worse run supporter.

Given our need for speed around the edge and an early addition like Barnett I wouldn't be surprised if we gave him a chance as a 3rd down pass rusher and see if there's any possibility of improvement.

Kazee in my estimation is gone before 5.

I've seen the " slow starter " tag assigned Barnett....what on tape makes YOU say that ?

I'd rather go Elflein in round two if he's there and the team goes oline.

For the mostpart I'd absolutely love this draft- just a couple of quibbles...

dawkins is probably not worth that 2nd rounder - I'm a big fan of his but as a 3rd round guy - I think the value at tight end or corner/safety or wide receiver or even another edge guy will be too great to take Dawkins there

awuzie is a great pickup in the 3rd

vanderdoes I don't think gets picked - and I will struggle to see any defensive tackles or linemen period go to the Ravens... we just don't really have any room left in the room - I know Ozzie normally drafts one a year and that we are good at finding them in the middle rounds but we literally have all the defensive tackles we need/want at this point - for us to take a DL the value world have to be ridiculous at each point and I don't see that with vanderdoes in the 4th round

kazee I think is a 4th rounder but he could well go in the 3rd and will definitely be gone before the 5th - I would take him instead of vanderdoes even before we re-signed Brandon Williams

however if this is the way our draft panned out I'd be pretty pumped still

Like this mock a lot. Dawkins is a really good player so I wouldn't be mad at 48 unless Elflein or another really good OL or corner was there.

Vanderdoes seems like a wasted pick though

Just curious how tall is Chidobe and Ford?

From what I see Chidobe's 6'0" and Ford's 6'2". Not sure where numbers come from though.

I like the mock a lot besides Vanderdoes. He's done nothing in college to make me think he'll be anything but a career backup in the pros.
