[News] Late For Work 3/7: Torrey Smith Cut By 49ers. Ravens Reunion Up Next?

43 posts in this topic

Torrey Smith's return to Baltimore could be determined by Mike Wallace. The latest on four Ravens free agents. Is this week a turning point for the Ravens franchise? Ronnie Stanley should probably start preparing for Myles Garrett now.

Who say's you couldn't have Wallace, Smith and, Perriman? They could use one of the TE's in the slot since they can't block?

It's a shame to lose 3 of our higher level guys and we will feel the loss but no way is Ricky Wagner worth top tackle money. Williams is a beast and great person but his lack of pass rush makes him more expendable and definitely not worth what he will probably get paid by some aweful team with no run defense. Too one dimensional. Juice could be a very unique and dynamic player on another team that knows how to use him. That team is not the ravens and therefor is not worth more than the 2 mil a year FB typically get paid. I wish all of them well but the Ravens will be better off allocating that money elsewhere. The loss of Orr may be the biggest hole to fill. Hopefully KC is up for it this year.

need a receivers coach that will get these guys to run crisp routes and improve their overall technique. the team needs to start developing its own receivers instead of leaning on cap casualties or trades

because we need someone on the outside that can win in the short/intermediate passing game. someone who can actually run routes and has clutch hands.

All 3 of those guys as of now (w/ Perriman really the only one who could change this) all win with speed... which means it takes time for them to get open. They need enough space and time to build up to the speed at which theyre faster than the DB covering them. That means you also need the pocket to hold up that long.

Short/intermediate routes dont often allow for that sort of space and time. Which means they'd need to be able to make tightly contested catches. Neither Wallace or Torrey has the body, physicality, hands or mentality to win that way on a consistent basis. Perriman isnt there yet but could.

So, we need that guy. Not necessarily a slot guy... but hopefully a big bodied guy that separates early and naturally and has vice grip hands. A la Brandon Marshall or Pierre Garcon. A Cooper Kupp in the draft would be a great fit potentially. Williams/Davis both would as well but doubtful we use the #16 pick on WR even if one of those 2 would be available.

It'd be great to have Torrey back from an emotional standpoint... but i just dont think its a good idea unless he would sign for way less than what we could save by cutting Wallace. If we could potentially save $3mill then I'd probably consider it. Otherwise, i say just keep Wallace, maybe even extend him a year or two and sign that complimentary receiver aka Brandon Marshall.

We will loose BW, RW and KJ to FA that's just how the ravens operate. We have alot of depth on the interior defensive line and we do a good job of producing good player at that position with lower picks, we will do just fine without BW. The ravens also do a good job at picking quality offensive linemen in the lesser rounds, expect Alex Lewis to play RT next season and a C/G being picked in the third, fourth or fifth round.

As far as veteran receiver, I'd rather have Brandon Marshall over any of the other WR available this year in FA!

For the first three rounds of the draft I would like to see us pick:
1st round : CB/Pass Rusher/Safety (Best available)
2nd round : CB/Pass Rusher (Best Available)
3rd round (2 picks) : C/G/CB

P.S. I really wish you pick at #16 would be Derek Barnet!

Torrey is a nice insurance policy if we cant reduce Wallaces cap hit by extending him. They really are about the same WR except Wallace has learned to be a little more versatile over the years. But both can stretch the field and with Perriman opposite them... can be a handful. We need someone to work the slot however and I am just not convinced that Camp can stay healthy enough or even take that next step. wouldn't mind adding a Ju Ju Smith Schuster with one of those 3rd round picks or picking up a (Garcon or Brandon Marshall)... they would really compliment The speed we can put on the outside.

thanks, but no thanks to Torrey. would like to see the Ravens go DB in the 1st, then pass rush in 2nd, hopefully get someone like Zay Jones or JuJu in the 3rd players who get go up fight for the 50/50 balls

Saw a report that Wagner is trying to make big money, he is gone, don't care though he doesn't deserve top RT money, if we cant work something out with Williams he can walk too, Michael Pierce can fill in. As for Torrey Smith, I like the reunion party, would like to have Mike Wallace too, but he's older and would have a higher cap penalty, makes sense to cut him

Can't believe we haven't made any cuts to free up cap yet. Wagner isn't nearly as good as his PFF grade and gets bullied a lot, shouldn't be hard to find a serviceable veteran stopgap with this draft class being so poor at tackle. Doug Free comes to mind.

I love brandon williams, home town guy, great success story, but at the end of the day 10m a year for a 2 down player is not a good investment. I don't think Pierce is the answer but you can usually pick up a big boy nose in the later rounds.

Juscyk is fun to watch but we really don't utilize him properly. If we were to pay the $4m or so a year it would take to bring him back we would really need to utilize him in multiple roles better.

Hope to see us make an early push to lock up mangold, would make a huge difference right away and there's no other good options in the draft or FA.

Also keep in mind that Wagner gets a LOT of help from Yanda. Some of those highlights showing Marshall bumping, picking and blocking 3 guys on 1 play are just incredible. Amazing athlete and we are so lucky to have him. Wagner may do well elsewhere but it's far from guaranteed. Yanda is the key, not Wagner.

IMO Torrey goes to Philly who will offer more money. Truth be told, Wallace is the better player anyway.

Torrey's stats look poorer than Wallace, but Torrey also drew a large number of pass interference penalties. For example, see this article from 2015 from our very own Hensley.
http://www.espn.com/blog/baltimore-ravens/post/_/id/17248/ravens-torrey-smith-is-king-of-drawing-pass-interference

If one factors that in (and they should), there's more to Torrey than meets the eye.

And while Perriman and Wallace will do that do, as someone said below, why not use one of our TEs in the slot and have three fast WRs. And that's not to say that Wallace cannot do routes. From what I remember, some of his best plays were on slant routes with major yardage/TDs after the catch.

I hope Torrey Smith can come back. More fast receivers is never a bad thing. We'd have 3 guys, Smith, Wallace, and Perriman, who can go deep. The amount of speed we can muster could really aid the running game by getting those safeties to back off. We need Flacco throwing the ball deep again. Without it, we're not going to scare anyone.

It's now 12 Noon so FAs can start talking to other teams. I expect we will here who the ravens release sometime today and at the latest tomorrow. I can only think that maybe the Ravens have been talking to Pitta, Webb and Wallace among others to see if they'll take less or restructure. I see Wagner long gone. Hope Brandon Williams and Juice give us an opportunity to match if they get a good offer elsewhere. With the 16th pick it seems that a top rated CB or DE/OLB rusher should be available and in the 2nd round we can get whichever position we don't do in round 1. I think we'll fill the WR needs in free agency. Of the 2 running backs if Fournette is there at 16 and top CBs like Lattimore or Jones are gone you have to consider drafting him at that point. I like the idea of signing Nick Mangold for C replacing Zuttah. On the practice squad we had M Skura a C/G learning the ropes and bulking up his body mass. He has good potential. With Wagner gone, move Lewis to RT and try Skura at LG. An OL of Stanley, Skura, Mangold, Yanda, Lewis seems solid. We can also get an experienced inside lineman later in free agency for depth.

The next couple days will be anxious for ravens and Raven fans alike!

Torrey's PI numbers are highly inconsistent though. People reference 2015 like that's what he did his whole career, but that's not even remotely the case.

Gauging a WRs worth based on how many penalties he draws is like gauging a WRs worth based on how many TDs he catches. Far too inconsistent of a measurement.

Yes, more speed is always good. But we need the quick and fearless receiver who will go inside.

Torry back? About the same time Ray Rice and Boldin step on the field or Reed get hired.

If Juice leaves we could use Nick Boyle as a FB. Hes 6'4" 260 and is a good blocker and can catch out of the backfield. We have too many TEs and to convert him wouldn't be that hard.

I really like Torrey Smith, but going backward is not the way forward, know what I mean?

Yep you hit all those bullet points perfectly....

While it'd be nice to keep those guys because they're all solid players, none at the moment could justify taking up a healthy junk of the team's future salary cap.

Thats the way it's gone for several years in a row now. We have guys that are contributors but can't tell if they will become Pro Bowlers or All Pros worthy of a second contract and a big pay day.

Its just too bad we never trade any of these guys and spin them into 2nd round picks like the patriots.

We just lose guys to free agency and hope for compensatory picks.

Id love to keep Wallace and sign Torrey but I don't think its realistic for two reasons:
1. The cap savings will be to tempting to let Wallace go if we are able to sign Torrey
2. While Torrey hasn't had a good run in San Fran I think he is still worth more than the Ravens might be willing to pay, especially with desperate teams out there in need of speed.

Bringing Torrey back couldn't hurt. Sure his numbers have fallen off a bit, but look at where he was playing and who was throwing to him. Given that he is a local guy and did good things for the Ravens during the 4 years he was here, I'm all for him re-joining. I tell you one thing- having him around would probably motivate Perriman to get his stuff together.

There is no reason to bring back Torry Smith. We need to get better no regress, Torry Smith would be regressing.

When are the Ravens gonna start cutting some of these cap hogs? I'm good with keeping Wallace and seeing if we can work a deal out with Torrey. But I'm almost sure that team down 95 is gonna have a lot of interest in Torrey and are losing their WR core. The Eagles had no one to catch the ball as well. So it is going to be a strong market for him. I would cut Wallace in one scenario and that's if we needed his money to resign Brandon Williams.

Hopefully the FO can put a contender on the field for harbs or He's going to be looking for a new job and by the look of it we are going to have a new coach next year but hopefully ozzie & co can make something happen but even if we make it to the playoffs I want them to fire DC Dean he is one of biggist problems we have his bend and break defense but right behind him is harbs with his special teams calls that cost us two games last year and years before I'm going to start being more positive about OC Marty I will not hold any grudge against him because of last year just hope he puts together a good playbook an gets the offense going early in the year Can't wait to see who we cut and draft we wont be signing any big names in free agency this year imo
