[News] Late For Work 2/22: Ravens Named As A Potential Trade Partner For Pass Rusher Connor Barwin

Cut Dumervil and a few of the other players we have nearing Social Security.
Draft and Draft smart. Ozzie has just been "BAD" the past years. Maybe its time his under study got a shot. He can't draft any worse.

Team needs SPEED.

3 safeties in a row? No thanks.  Besides,  going in drafting for position is how you end up reaching and making a bad cut.

Being from Beirut Lebanon... I don't really get to see College Football as much as NFL...(bought nfl ticket) in alllllll honesty(not your preferred pick) who is the best DB in the draft? Best WR? Best Passrusher? Best OL?.. to have an idea

Azzi22 you might want to check out this site...

http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/players.php?genpos=WR&draftyear=2017&sortby=tsxpos&order=ASC

It gives you a pretty good ranking of all of the players in their position groups, which changes in real time. It's certainly not the end all be all but I find that it is the one that stays up to date. There are other similar sites and there is not going to be agreement between them, but usually the first few players at each position are fairly consistent. There is also game tape on guys you can check out on youtube. I wouldn't get too carried away with watching it all though, before you know it it's going to be all over and done with. If it's your first draft it's definitely going to be pretty interesting. There are always guys expected to be taken in the 2nd or 3rd that make it all the way to the 7th, or don't even get drafted. And then there guys expected to be taken late that get taken early. They never get picked how they're ranked and of course there are always going to be players taken late that end up having much better careers than guys taken early. Nothing is certain. And there will be guys that are ranked as UDFAs now that shoot up boards after the combine times come in. I'd be interested to know how you became a fan of the Ravens. Don't feel obligated to answer but if you don't mind I'd love to know. I know there is a small Lebanese community here in the city.

no charlie, it says #3 , #4 and #5 take the best Safety, CB or pass rusher available. So if the best player on the board at the #3 pick is a Pass Rush DB or LB the Ravens should take them, If it is a Safety or even another CB then the Ravens should consider. . However not take the same three times in a row. That would be kind of ridiculous for you to think.
As far as drafting for position as part of the equation, its what most NFL teams do. With the exception of the top 5 picks. However some teams have traded out of the top 5 because they did NOT have the need for the top players in the position.
Some agree with them some don't.

Ah ok, i get what your saying Fran, i thought that sounded a little off.  I definitely dont like the idea for drafting by position only, of course some of the BPA available has to do with position, but lets say we retained Torrey Smith, I highly doubt we go with BP because imo our need at the position forced us to take someone to replace Torrey.  Now obviously i dont know the FO's big board, nor do any of us, i just find it hard to believe that he was the BPA when a guy like Byron Jones or Malcom Brown is on the board, but to be honest i havent followed Jones career to see how he has done.

Maybe im in the minority with those opinions, wouldnt be the first time.

usmccharles = dacosta

and we've seen that drafting the best player available has really helped us build a solid foundation of young players over the past five years- lol... something needs to change- plus we've brought on 10 safeties and 10 TEs to this team and none of them have been as good as Pollard, Reed, Heap, etc...

Weird, we haven't drafted someone as good as Reed....who is easily considered one of the best S's of all time....damn our FO sucks.  You act like we are the only one who misses on draft picks, its comical.

I believe the best piece the Ravens could get in free agency is Johnathan Cyprien. That's the player we need at the back end; a physical type hard nose safety that could give us some physical ness in the secondary and he's will be a perfect complement with Weddle. Johnathan Cyprien made 127 tackles last year as a safety so that would be a huge addition to the team.

Peppers is a freak athlete but not an elite talent position wise, solid at several positions and a master of none. Way too boom/bust to take at 16

Many believe he could be a Weddle like talent and could slip to the second.

if peppers were to slide past the first 7 or 8 teams at the top of the second if pounce on getting him. He will be a chess piece worth having.

I'd way rather take a mauling BA Center that will be with us for at least the next 4 years. Peppers might be a good pro, but I doubt he'll ever be a great one. Better college player and athlete than NFL player imo. Happens a lot. Reminds me a lot of Shaq Thompson that the panthers took in the first a couple years ago. Except Peppers is smaller and faster. Everyone was excited about Shaq cuz he was good on D and special with the ball in his hands. He hasn't made a big impact at the next level, even playing behind and around studs. I could see the same thing happening with Peppers. His self proclaimed 4.34 forty sounds like a joke to me. Didn't look anything near that on film to me. Obviously I may be completely wrong, but I don't see him as an impact player at the next level. I don't buy the hybrid thing. Too small for lb imo, and I don't know if he has the true cover skills to be a safety. I wouldn't even take him with our second pick, so if we take him at 16.....I'll be beyond bummed

1. Jabrill Peppers/top tier CB 2. Adoree Jackson BEST CASE SCENARIO

WR in the first round is nails on a chalk board. Let's not forget Flacco is throwing the ball (Mr. pseudo-elite himself).

With Peppers and/or Jackson we address arguably our two biggest needs SECONDARY and PR/KR.

If we do anything but DB or Pass Rusher in the first round I will be sorely disappointed.

Will require a good enough to player to be there when we pick.

We have about 10 positions where you could easily justify using a first round pick on, as we need playmakers at just about every level.

OL, WR, pass rusher, CB, Safety, MLB, even RB or TE are all positions where we could easily use an upgrade.

Last thing we want to be doing is picking a position instead of a player.

OL- aren't any worth taking at 16
WR- Davis or Williams would be sweet
Pass Rusher- Barnett or Thomas
MLB- don't even think about it
RB- NO at 16
TE- NO at 16

So I'm with him on the theory or pass rusher or db in the first. It's fit's our needs at what's there in the draft. Especially considering there will be dbs ava. at 16 that would easily go in the top 10 of most drafts. And it's been our most glaring need for years and what's been holding us back.
Jones, Wilson, Lattimore, or Tabor will be there at 16. If not, a huge talent at a different position slipped to us

Cyprien is a guy I really liked coming out of college. The knock on him back then was if he was fast enough transitioning to the NFL level. Well he proved that to be wrong as he's much faster in game speed than his 40 time. He would be a great compliment to weddle but i don't know if his price is doable. I would be hesitant to just let go of Webb but if Cyprien is the reason then it's good enough for me ;)

Yeah, that's a good idea. Trade away a maybe half decent player for the "third worst edge rusher" in the NFL. The only way I'd do that, is if the Eagles were dumb enough to take Pathetic Joe and his pathetic contract off the Ravens hands.

Would really rather try to get Garcon in free agency than trade/pay for Barwin; too much $ for too little production - plus he's already 30 yrs old too.

Agree,  Going in with set position(s) for each round is asking for a bad draft.  You have to look at the value on the board.  I would love to see a CB early, but if there is great value for another position (WR, Oline, S, Pass rusher, etc), you have to trust the Ravens brass to get the best playmaker on the board that can help the team.  Maybe all our top guys at CB come off the board before us and another position high on our board is surprisingly available..  You can't be pigeon-holed into taking a certain position in a certain round.  Granted, position and need obviously come into play with how your board is stacked up...but you can't pass on a player that is way higher on your board to "fill" a specific position.

lets look at it adding another way, including , Draft player ranking.
At #16 The Ravens will be looking at a 5.9 to a 6.5 player rank. There will be multiple players at multiple positions available very closely ranked.
So the idea of the Ravens taking a 1st round LT is nil because they have Stanley, yet there may be a LT at a 6.2 ranking. The Ravens may opt to take a CB with a 6.1 ranking, or even a Pass rusher at 6.0 ranking.
The Ravens just like all NFL teams put position need almost at the highest priority when competitive ranking is close.

Now drop to the 48th pick (#2) the Ravens will have more choices with competitive ranking, If there is a Center who is ranked 5.8 and is the #1 or #2 Center in the draft he is normally a better choice than a 5.9 or even a 6.0 Ranked RB or WR that is #4 or #5 for their position in the draft. It can be about scouting and playmaking position being ranked vs Team chart and the need for non-ball handling positions.

So with that said, if there were 3 Safeties with 6.8, 6.6, and 6.2 rankings yet the next player is a LT with a 6.0 ranking. you tell me what player would you take being the Ravens selection.

No I get what your saying, I was just confused on your initial post.  I was just saying that you shouldn't go into a round saying we are going to draft this position, so your kind of changing the subject on what I initially talking about.

Way too early to be determining who is worth what at what place in the draft.

Certainly would expect OLineman to be taken in that range on draft day, just as they pretty much always have been.

Pollard was a lockeroom cancer and a penalty flag machine.  Yea he made some big hits so everyone loves him for that.  There's a reason he did absolutely nothing when he left. And got cut...

Idk but I think he means that he'd be dissapointed if the draft forced us to take someone other than those 2 positions. I'm also hoping beyond hope that a top ten CB or Pass rusher falls to us because those are the 2 positions that we can't really upgrade in FA without breaking the bank.

like when CJ fell to us. Obvious top ten talent. I hope it's a CB that falls. But if it's another CJ then we have to take him!

and dear lord. I really hope we don't take a TE with our first pick no matter how good he is lol

But that's the whole point... we're not even remotely in a position as a team to handstring ourselves to one or two positions, because we aren't one or two positions away from being a contender.

Goal is to get a playmaker, regardless of position. If its RB, cool. If its TE, cool. If its a DB, pass rusher, WR, cool.

Not even remotely in a position as a team to focus on targeting 1-2 positions with that pick.
