Just to beat a dead horse as I am on record for saying there is no way in this world Flacco should have the highest cap hit in the NFL, here is a guy who has finished in the bottom third of qbs in the league for several years in a row. Bisciotti and Ozzie totally blew that contract by giving him an extension and pumping it up even more. The guy is stealing. He is robbing the ravens blind by taking that money. We are talking about almost a million dollars a touchdown that he threw last year. Ozzie needs to sit him down and let him know that he is destroying this teams ability to sign quality players by holding on to that money he doesn't deserve. He knows he isn't that guy and he knows he should be giving some of it back. The Ravens need to let him know that if he chooses not to take a salary cut that they will draft or sign a free agent qb and get him ready to take Joes spot in two years when they can finally afford to cut him. By then he won't be worth much and no one will go out of their way to sign Flacco. When I think of how Ozzie missed on Elam, Arthur Brown, Max Williams, Terrence Cody, etc... I think his biggest mistake as GM by far was the Flacco contract.

Flacco has no control on his cap number. That's all in how the Ravens have set up his contact.

Gonna bookmark this paragraph and wait until you see how much Tony Romo and Jay Cutler get paid in FA this season, as proof to validate what Joe's value would be worth (plus inflation) 2 years from now when that happens.

Should give me a good chuckle.

What's your feelings on the $9million Webb received?  Do you think he was worth the $9mill for 1 interception this past year??  What about the $7.5 million he's due to get in 2017?

Not only that; the article states that basically Romo's cap hit is higher than Flacco's.  What has Romo done?  How many playoff wins does he have?  Championships?  Talk about overpaying and underperforming - Romo is the poster child for that!!!

So are you saying would become a top 10 QB in next 2 years? come on.. you can not attribute team success to one player and give number 1 money to him. QB should be earned based on his performance, Romo earned because he had good QB rating, team failed because it wasn't good in other areas. If you are comparing with Romo, why don't you compare Flacco with Ben, Rodgers, Brady, etc? None of us are real Flacco haters, just wondering how that elite money worth for him.

i wouldn't really say its 'hating' when all the facts are there. He hasn't lived up to the contract given to him. At the end of the day its not all on him, we can easily blame the front office for putting the organization in this position. At the end of the day, to hear that Flacco has the highest cap hit in the NFL is just mind boggling.

I can not believe all the hate you are getting. I seriously do not comprehend how people can even defend Flacco's contract in this situation.

Yes, he was signed after a SB run for the ages. But Oz himself has said that in this league you get paid based on "what have you done for me lately". Well, FACT is that lately Flacco has been among the bottom 10 of QB and FACT is that Flacco is getting like he is the #1 QB in the NFL.

I just honestly do not understand how so many people can seriously believe that Flacco's salary is fair and fit considering his playing level.

You can not seriously suggest that Romo or Cutler will get paid 24+ mil?!

You know what, how about a wager? If Romo or Cutler get paid in the same ballpark as Flacco (23-24,5 mil cap hit(!) for 2017) under their new contracts, then I shut up for the rest of eternity regarding Flacco's salary and admit that below average QBs are worth 24mil. But if Romo and Cutler both get paid less than 23 mil (cap hit) for 2017, then you publicly admit that Flacco is vastly overpaid for a mind numbingly below average QB that he is and stop defending his contract.

How's that, sound fair?

1. No, I wouldn't. I completely ignored that idea, because its not going to happen whether it should, shouldn't, or fans want it to. Fans can dream all they want, but I prefer to live in the real world and not in a dream world.

2. Actually, you could argue QBs aren't paid based on performance either. If that were true, then how could one pay Brock Osweiler $18M a year? QBs are paid because there's about 20 viable QBs in the whole league, and there's 32 NFL teams. So if a team even thinks they have a wild shot at the guy they have or a guy they can get being any good, they're willing to pay him a lot to find out.

In the end, there is no right or wrong way to evaluate a QB, though I will say that QB rating means nothing to NFL teams, because its a made up statistic that doesn't actually mean anything. Its why you won't hear NFL coaches, FO personnel or talent evaluators referencing it, because they don't care about it.

Some people value QBs based on how they produce during the most crucial times, which Flacco would be high on that list, similar to an Eli Manning or Big Ben for a large stretch of his career. Others may value QBs based on TD passes, yardage, etc. None of this really matters.

All that matters is there are teams that have a viable starting QB in this league (a QB who is competent enough not to kill your team on a weekly basis, all while maybe not throwing 5 TDs every game) and there are teams that don't. And the teams that don't have very little success in this league, unless they manage to put together an all-time great defense like the 2015 Broncos (which is incredibly rare and impossible to consistently do). And those teams that don't will spend many years, sometimes decades trying to find somebody that they can even call serviceable.

As such, when I referenced guys like Romo and Cutler, I was referencing QBs who have had some pretty good statistical seasons, some pretty bad statistical seasons, some major injury question marks, and a history of perceived erratic play.

That's Joe Flacco, without the injury concerns. And those QBs will have significant market interest if they hit FA, and I bet they will be playing on contracts that pay them at least $12-15M a year.

So when the OP states that Joe would have no market interest, we will be able to point to comparative players in recent years who had significant interest and were paid significantly because of that.

Sorry.... I like Webb... think he has contributed a great deal to the team and to the city over the past several years. However... there is simply no we that we can justify paying him the same as Weddle or any of the top S in the league. I saw we let him big contract walk and grab Jebrill Peppers in RD. 2. (Peppers and Weddle back there roaming would be sick)!

Garcon reminds me a lot of Boldin and think he would be a great addition to the offense. Make it happen!!

Garcon would be a great addition and I think we could get him for a fair price. Would love to see him in Purple and Black!

A true Flacco Hater

This "Flacco Hater" just stated that Flacco does not deserve to be the #1 highest paid QB in the NFL. Since you obviously disagree, I suppose you think Flacco is the best QB in football??

Now, Flacco is not the best QB in the NFL, not by any standard whatsoever. Therefore, I'm only left to conclude that either you are delusional or you are labeling people as "Flacco haters" without paying any attention to what they are saying.

Not much we can do on his contract.... it is just a bad deal. Joe is clearly not a top 5 QB and yet paid like he is Tom Brady or Aaron Rogers. Nonetheless he has us and the best that we can hope for is that he gets close to being a top 10 QB- With that being said.. we need to put whatever pieces in place to help him to be successful!

Why do I care if they get paid $24M (which Joe's not getting paid by the way, so no idea where you came up with that number) (hint: cap hit and what they actually get paid aren't the same thing)?

What if they get paid $18M a year? Surely you would agree that $18M a year for literally any NFL player is a very large financial commitment? That's over 10% of a teams total spending ability on a single player.

So $18M for a 37 year old QB who's about as fragile as it gets is all of the sudden considered "no interest from teams", but $22M for a QB 6 years younger and actually plays in games is somehow a franchise crushing payout? LOL, what planet do you guys live on?

Heck, I'd say any dollar amount greater than $15M and I'd rather have Joe than either one of those guys. Or a 34 year old who's literally the most erratic QB in the league?

According to the OP, Joe would have "zero interest" in the FA market two years from now if he continues to play the way he has. So wouldn't that stand to reason that Cutler and Romo should also have "zero interest" in FA this year? They're older, and either just as erratic and inconsistent or can't even stay on the field... AND they don't have any of the playoff experience or individual and team success in it.

The flacco contract definitely is hurting us. In fact I would say that probably no other contract in the NFL is handcuffing their team worse.

But I still would not call that Ozzies biggest mistake. IDK... Boller comes to mind. Allowing Harbs to bring Dean Pees in comes to mind... The Webb contract is up there. The Pitta contract is also up there. All the guaranteed money on the Ray Rice deal hurt us badly over the past two years. Sergio Kindle hurt us...

But Flacco has produced (albeit not up to his contract) but he has produced. So... as much as his contract holds the team hostage... I cant call it Ozzie's worst move... but its top 10 for sure!

SSS should get a prize for "Most Willpower."

Flacco needs to do a Brady deal and restructure his contract to put more money into keeping him safe in the pocket.

No, our concern should be building a roster around him and worrying about the contracts of players we actually have the leverage to negotiate.

Our concern isn't sitting around whining and complaining about something you can't undo and something you can't change. It might be YOUR concern, because you're not responsible for anything, but its certainly not the concern of the FO.

Their concern is finding ways for him to play better and for people around him to play better. The concern is about raising the playing level, not lowering the salary, since the latter isn't happening.

Also, the implication is that Flacco's CAP HIT is too much, not his compensation for the coming year. They're not the same thing.

This is true. He had all of the leverage after winning the SB with that end-of-year run. One of the times wear the gamble worked for the player and the team paid up. Whether you love or hate him, he's going to be on the team for the next few years at least - just the way his deal is set up.

So what were are other options at QB when the confetti was dropping down on the field in New Orleans?

Trade up in the 1st round of the 2013 NFL draft for... EJ Manuel

Or sit at 32 and pick... Geno Smith

Legends like Tim Tebow, Matt Casell, Kevin Kolb, Matt Moore, and Ryan Fitzpatrick were veteran free agents at that time

Or trade a whole bunch of capital for a QB that a team was willing to part with and let Flacco walk for a 3rd-round compensatory pick.

Or, sign Flacco to a long-term deal he earned.

Gonna bookmark this paragraph and wait until you see how much Tony Romo and Jay Cutler get paid in FA this season, as proof to validate what Joe's value would be worth (plus inflation) 2 years from now when that happens.

Should give me a good chuckle.

I have been hearing this since the day Joe signed his contract. "You just wait until the next QB signs his deal, then you'll see Flacco is only getting the going rate for NFL QB's". Well it's been 4 long years and every QB in the league has signed a new contract since Joe in 2013. Not one, not two, EVERY QB IN THE LEAGUE. But your right, I'm sure Romo and Cutler will be the highest paid QB's in the league this year. Wow.

webb, wallace, pitta, maybe even flacco might have to restructure their contracts. pitta might have to take a paycut, his blocking is horrendious , and it might end flaccos season if he continues blocking like that. and it seems flacco always looks for pitta on every play instead of going thru his progressions.

Garcon is a good fit here in Bmore, he's a boldin clone,
