[News] Franchise Tag Window Opens Today. Will Ravens Use It?

13 posts in this topic

Baltimore has a history of using the franchise tag to prolong contract talks, but it seems unlikely that they’ll use it this year. Defensive tackle Brandon Williams would be the most likely candidate.

we should not keep Williams unless we get a few people to take pay cuts to make it easier to still add people. I don't really count cuts as being part of it because then we still need to replace those people. I would love Williams back and we could take a big hit on our run d if he leaves but too many holes on other parts of the team.

I sure hope the Ravens can keep Kyle. When he has the ball he is like a bulldozer looking for a tree to run over. Kyle would help bring the run game back by beating up players, especially New England.

if they cut webb, doom, watson, zuttah, wright and Arrington try to trade away Kendrick Lewis and renegotiate Mike Wallace contract we should be able to resign Williams an have some cap space to make moves in free agency

I love B-Will , but we have some depth at his position , and we need help at so many other areas , just doesn't make sense to FT him...

I think that Wagner may be more likely to sign than Williams. Although who knows. Snacks Harrison who is a better lineman than Williams, signed for 46 mil with 24 guarantee with a 9 mill APY. If Williams makes less than that, which he should since he is not on the same level as Snacks, I would say Williams should be very much in Baltimores price range. Although, you still have teams like the Oakland Raiders, who will spend 50 mil for a guard. Little steep. I think at this Juncture the Ravens can afford to lose Williams, because the Ravens have always been good at drafting D Lineman and Williams does not get many sacks. If we lose Wagner, that leaves two holes on the O Line ( assuming Zutta may be out the door, only if we can find a replacement ) Where as with Williams position, the Ravens have good depth.

I'd like to see them take the money that we'll spend on Brandon Williams and use that money on a good wide receiver. The Ravens are bosses at signing D Linemen where as wide receivers they lose ever time..........at least through the draft that is.

Ravens probably will not use the tag, its more than they want to spend at the position. However, offering a cap maneuvered contract is still very much in the making. 10-11 mil that includes some bonus and deferred cap money is doable.

The Ravens certainly will get a couple WR's, keeping Williams does not change that. Probably one in FA and a young draft pick.

I do not see anyone else that will get the Tag offer on the Ravens team.

Bigg,

Expect that the Ravens will lose both Williams and Wagner. Looking at their history, the big ticket players more often than not (nearly always) find new homes. In recent years...Troy Smith, Bolden, Osemele, Ngata, J. Jones, Kruger, Dicksen, Scott, J. lewis...the list is long. This year you can add to it Williams and Wagner, and next year Jernigan until we can get out from under Flacco's contract. One can argue in many cases, the lackluster benefits to the teams that got these FAs; however, this is a cr@p shoot...one can never predict how a player will adapt to a new system i.e. Reed, J. Lewis, T. Smith, P. Kruger. The Ravens have seen this first hand.

But the writing is already on the wall; Wagner already rejected the Ravens first offer. I am not expecting that either of these will remain; especially with the Ravens cap space among the lowest in the NFL (of note...the Patriots have among the highest cap spaces available in the NFL...go figure!!!).

I think the biggest mistake is Aiken. He played remarkably well in 2015 when he was given the opportunity to play. This year, his time was severely limited as were his catches. But when you have a quarter back who measures his successes by how many times he throws to Pita, who can compete with that? Why is that Aiken's fault? In 2015. Aiken played with the same passion that we have seen in Steve Smith and it went unnoticed. His leaving the Ravens will come back to haunt us...I guarantee it.

I did like Aiken in 2015. I think they should cut Pitta. I like the guy and what he has overcome but he is too much of a Crutch for Flacco. Joe needs to come out of his comfort zone and strecth the field. He has done it before with Bolden, Torrey and Steve Smith, and with Jacoby Jones.
