Myles Garrett Asks Cowboys to Trade Up with Cleveland

21 posts in this topic

I get Cleveland is not a place any player would want to go but I don't know if this helps him from a character stand point. Makes me wonder if he'll pull an Eli and refuse to play for Cleveland and try to get a trade worked out to play elsewhere. While I get he wants to play for his hometown Dallas Cowboys, Some teams may look at this as him being selfish and all about him, and others may not care.

Quote

“I’m speaking to you, Jerry,” Garrett says on the video. “Mr. [Jason] Garrett, make it happen. Dak Prescott is leading our team right now. I need you to take Tony Romo, take a couple picks, and give them to Cleveland so you can pick me up, please. I’d love to play in Dallas. Let’s make it happen.”

I think really great players shouldn't be worried about going to bad teams. If anything it can become part of their HoF campaign if they can say, "I was the guy that helped turn one of the worst teams into a contender." Also, this seems less about the Browns and more about Garrett wanting to play for the Cowboys.

If it was a QB and he refused to go there, would we think its a bad character move?  These kids train their entire life for this career, going to a team that could hamper their development should make them worried.  If i remember correctly, Elway said he would go be a lawyer rather than playing for the Colts because that FO has always been terrible.

If you graduate top of your class from Standford Law School, you get to choose the job you get.  Different world i know, just trying to find an analogy.  I have no issue with someone wanting to work for a first class organization compared to the bottom the barrel type.

Correction, Elway would have went and played Baseball for the Yankees if the trade with Denver didn't go through.

I know this doesn't seem like a big deal but why not try to better yourself and asked to be traded to a better team.

Thats what it was.  How is asking to be traded to a better team any different that what Garret said?  I mean, i wouldnt have said it that way, but i have no issue with him publicly saying what he feels.  I think players are often too politically correct and give cliche answers.  I wont fault anyone for being authentic

I don't fault him for it, Cleveland isn't anywhere near competitive, at the least see if he can be traded to a better team, not necessarily Dallas but do a Eli/Rivers deal where you swap players and other picks.

Ah i see what you mean.  If i was him, i would honestly say i wouldnt play for them.  I guess saying a specific team is a little much.

as an outsider from another country i've always found the draft system a little irksome - the idea that a young player/person can shed any loyalties or fandom that they've had historically feels inauthentic and weird - i mean it's obviously the way things work but it feels at least a little counter-intuitive asking young guys to go against age-old loyalties just because that's the way they get paid

so honesty this way is problematic twofold: firstly because obviously he doesn't actually really control where he plays and secondly because the system forces players to have no choice in their future team

Yeah, but without that system in place, the best teams would get the best players nearly every time. You end up with teams that are unstoppable and other teams that have literally no way of climbing out of the hole. We'd have a team win a championship and then grabbing the three highest ranked college players.

Basically like college?

I don't necessarily blame him but seriously it is not a good trait at all. Now, why in the world would Cleveland want him? He probably lost the #1 pick and slid down to #3 in the draft. The Cowboys certainly won't get him but he lost a ton of money with his immaturity. And I'm hurt because he didn't want to play for the Ravens. Which football kid who loves a tough defense wouldn't want to come to the 'Mecca' of defense? Hey Pees I just put you on the spot. Perform next year!

Pretty much a let down in my eyes... Why don't these guys have the pride or courage to think 'I want to make history, write a new chapter for a team and fans who deserve it. I want them to be proud of me. I'll be their Ray Lewis.'

Instead, these guys are so unbelievably entitled they don't feel the need to prove anything. No chip on their shoulder.

What happened with Eli was disgusting. Poor Browns fans don't deserve this Garrett bs.

He's a Cowboys fan. He wants to play for his childhood team. Your missing have the context. The day before he said he will do his best to help the browns become great if they pick him.

It's nothing to do with Cleveland and everything about wanting to play for the team he loves.

I'd say the same thing about Baltimore. Come and get me, I'm a huge fan I want to play for you.

People need to remember he lives in Arlington. Isn't the stadium there or they practice there in the summer?

He's an A+ character, so this is entirely about wanting to be a Cowboy because he was a fan for 20 years.

Non-story.

This is an insanely misleading article. The espn article from which the quotes originate clearly say that this was from months ago at a college football awards photo shoot and was one of several fun questions proposed to the players. Simply asked if they had a choice and could influence one team to pick them, who would it be. So the TEXAS!!!! A&M player decided to jokingly say that to the cowboys. And then followed up by saying he'd love to play in Cleveland and will be happy wherever he goes. But does the article mention that? No. Just entirely misleads so that people get the wrong idea and post arrogant comments and heated replies. So dumb...

If the comment was taken out of context by nfl writers than it's a different thing.

But put as it is it would be everything but professional. Doesn't matter who's your next employer, you have to show full commitment.
