[News] Ravens' Top Offseason Job: Help Joe Flacco Play At Top-Tier Level

93 posts in this topic

I think I need to start off by stating a couple of things:

1) Joe Flacco is better than an average QB. He's not below average. Take a look around the NFL and see what kind of jokes there are as starting QBs that are getting paid big money just like Joe Flacco is.

2) Joe Flacco is not Tom Brady. You're paying him like Tom Brady because that's the going rate for an NFL starting QB. He's not Tom Brady so stop trying to make him something he isn't.

3) The revolving door at OC under Flacco is a legit statement. How can anyone be consistent when the OC changes all the time? Learning new offenses all the time?

4) Think his health was a major issue this season and not just his knee. He was dealing with something in his throwing shoulder this year too.

In the interest of trying not to write a novel, I'll make another post about what I think about this article.

Ozzy needs to do a better job! Last seasons draft Harbs rambled on about getting a difference maker a impact player. Where is he?

Honestly, these guys would not use them. SSS last game and he throws to Pitta?

Bingo! Somebody give that man a prize. Pitta coming back was the worst thing ever.

First of all, you need to identify what your team is. This team is currently not constructed to be a pass first, West Coast offense. We don't have the personnel at almost every position to run this. Flacco is not a WC QB. He's a strong armed gunslinger in the mold of Favre. He believes in his arm, sometimes to a fault. We don't have an agile zone-blocking line. We have road graders. Our backs are not speedy scatbacks. They are one cut and go types that can (if they choose to) pound it between the tackles. We didn't have fast/agile TE's that can run around underneath and create mismatches and then make something happen after the catch. Waller just can't catch the ball consistently enough and Maxx wasn't on the field. And....we have a full back. WC offenses do not use a FB. What I am saying here is that the first and most important thing you can do to help Joe Flacco is to turn this offense into a system that fits him and not try to make him fit a system that goes against virtually everything he is.

1: Coaching Improvements: This is already a fail because you didn't improve in the first major area and that would be OC. So now you want creative position coaches? Huh? Last time I checked the RB coach wasn't calling the offensive game plan. I guess Harbaugh just eluded to what we are all thinking. He wants Marty's replacement already in house when we finally realize 5-6 games in the season that nothing has changed. I do believe we need a new WR coach. Our WR's can never seem to get open and when they do, they drop the balls that hit them in the hands. I can understand not catching a pass you need to dive or jump for. But no excuse to drop passes CONSISTENTLY that hit you in the hands. Dennis Pitta; despite the things he can't do, can do one thing extremely well. He reads zones and knows how to get open in that coverage. It seems that none of our Wideouts know this.

2: Better Offensive Line: Just drafted franchise LT, You still have Yanda who is one of the best in the game at RG, Wagner was pretty good overall at RT and is most likely walking. LG/RG was an iffy spot with Alex Lewis (rookie) and Vlad Ducasse (journeyman) being your best options. Lewis was a rookie starting next to another rookie and was playing out of position. I believe he will make a better RT. Yanda is supposed to move back to RG. I don't see anyone in house being a great option to go to LG which means two things. 1) You draft another rookie. 2) You sign a good veteran, but probably wind up paying a premium and keeping him a couple more years past his usefulness. At Center Zuttah was decent until this season while he was completely banged up. Bad back and ankle issues. His replacement might be on the team in either John Urschel or Matt Skura...might. You can't turn over the job of center to somebody that doesn't know what he's doing. The LT might be the most critical position on the line because of the job description, but the C is the QB of the line and is the one supposed to make all the line's protection calls. There is quite a bit of work that needs to be done here.

3) Healthier Knee & Chemistry: Well, unless we're Dr. "Bones" McCoy from Star Trek, there's nothing anyone can do about Joe's knee. It will heal on its own time. I am also wondering what the deal was with his throwing shoulder and if that is still an issue. It clearly was affecting him for two games and perhaps it was a lingering thing from then on. The only thing Joe can do is workout and rehab as much as he can. As for chemistry, well, that's on Joe as well. How about hanging out with the guys on a voluntary off season mini passing camp?

4) Getting more Playmakers: Been hearing this for years yet we strike out in the draft and we don't sign premier guys in FA, instead we sign cast offs and guys at the tail ends of their careers. Keeping Aiken would be a mistake in my opinion and just repeating the past issues. There's nothing special about him. If you want a sure fire possession guy, bring back Boldin if he doesn't retire. THAT is a possession guy. He will make the tough catches. He will catch things that hit him in the hands. He will catch things you think he has no business catching. He's tough and he will run guys over. He is a redzone threat as well. Brandon Marshall if he becomes available is a playmaker. There are some question marks about him being healthy/motivated. I think playing for the Jets and a jerk of a QB like Cutler can certainly destroy your motivation and happiness. One thing Marhsall has proven is that he's a playmaker and he scores the football. The players will be out there, the question is if the Ravens will pony up what it takes to get them? As for the running back they want to add, I've said it before and I will say it again. They're looking for a Blount-type runner. Not necessarily to be the bell cow, but to be a red zone/short yardage/goal line pounder.

One thing I have to ask, is why on earth do people, including our fans, compare Flacco and Matt Ryan??? Matt Ryan was chosen 3rd OVERALL people? Big difference

Because they were in the same draft 2008 . Ryan has had Pro Bowl receivers and Hall of Fame Tight Ends. Flacco had Bolden, Rice, Torrey Smith and Pitta in 2012, then they all disintegrated. I think Ryan has 1 Playoff victory to Flaccos 10 playoff victories. Ryan had an Awful 2014 when he didn't have a good offensive line. Now he has a Very Good Offensive Coordinator in Kyle Shanahan, who we could of had. He has Great Receivers again. We need to get creative. We do flashy things in the first half get 10 Points than shut down the Offense and hope the Defense can hold.

That's who SI has us taking, but I'll be stunned if we go WR with our first pick. Not saying it can't happen, it just isn't the way our FO seems to operate on draft day.

Honestly, they need to at this point.  SSS is gone, Aiken sounds like he's gone, and with Wallace being an 8M hit with a 5.75M savings, I wouldn't be shocked if he's gone.

They need to actually start adding playmakers on offense and Davis seems like one.  A hands catcher that will fight for passes.  We need more of that.  Of course being realistic, the Ravens will get another older WR in free agency and then don't address WR again until the 4th or 5th round of the draft

Its a simple fix really, its not that we haven't had good receivers, it's just that we need good receivers who are about 8 feet tall to catch Joes Passes. Simple! smh

Harbaugh - you're an idiot. It just dawned on you that you need to give your QB protection and weapons - freaking brilliant!!!

Right because every throw the Joe makes is off. What about the ones that hit the receivers in the hands they drop? What about the receivers who can't get open in a zone coverage?

Man I'm sick of this stupid logic. If we fire John he'll have a job the next day but so did Rex Ryan and your point? If we did not pay Joe after the Superbowl who would we have a QB? Joe would play the same way on other teams because they could not afford a O-line, defense players or special teams players. See that's Bill Belichick key. He does not live in fear of the unknown.

I, also, would be stunned if Ozzie went wr in the 1st. He, uncharacteristically, did that 2 years ago with Perriman, and, so far, it didn't work out too well. I am one of the fans, however, who have not given up on the idea that Permian could still develop into a #1 wr. He does need to work on route running and his hands, though, for that to happen. And we are having to replace SSS. But, with all the talk, and legitimate talk at that, of our needs for better pass rushing, and a better secondary, I see us looking in that direction. After all, there's no question our defense lost us plenty of games due to its lack of ability to protect leads and stop game winning drives. There's no question that our offense is in need of some serious upgrades as well. What has me most concerned, though, is the fact that the Ravens are, apparently, staying pat with our current coaching staff. That, I believe, is a HUGE mistake and I, for one, find it utterly amazing. I am shocked, stunned, and flabbergasted about that.

So if the Ravens wind up on Hard Knocks....the theme music HAS got to be "Help!" From the Beatles for Joe Flacco.

Help! I need somebody
Help! Not just anybody
Help! You know I need someone
Help!

When I was younger so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
But now these days are gone and I'm not so self assured
Now I find I've changed my mind, I've opened up the doors

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my [front foot] on the ground
Won't you please, please help me?

And now my [team] has changed  in oh so many ways
My [confidence] seems to vanish in the ["cool"] haze
But [the pass rush comes] I feel so insecure
I know that I need [talent] like I've never done before

My edits come inside the brackets.

You sir are absolutely right If you are a player using a 1 to 10 scale if your a 8 a very good coach could make you a 10 if the coach is not so good he make you a 6 If you are a 5 maybe a good coach makes you a 7 But that's about if you average your average and believe me joe is average maybe slightly better with good Offensive coaching which the ravens do not have at the moment these are just facts

MATT BURK not directing the offense is whats hurting Joe. Joe's not the brightest bulb in the room. Accept that and work around it.

So true. I think that is the reason our OC's have been limited in there play calling for Joe.

Kubiak's offense was perfect for Him according to Tony Banks.

I've spoken with Mr. Banks a few times (nice guy), and he said what makes Kubiak's offense good for most QB's is that it is straight forward and that the QB only has to make a few key reads.

I know it want happen, but it would be great to have Kubiak back.

I disagree... number one priority is to get a starting caliber corner... the offense didnt get toasted by Crabtree on a game winning drive... the offense didn't let OBJ fry them for over 200 yrds AND a game winning drive... the offense didn't let Big Ben score a td in less than 90 seconds

A top tier CB and Pass Rusher they go hand and hand and not some old overpaid FA

I have to laugh. Coachspeak between now and when the season starts is just intolerable.

Don't tell me about coaching changes when you kept the guy who made the worst call in the history of the Ravens. You're not serious. No, seriously, they are not serious about that. This guy ran less than Trestman and threw more short passes which I didn't think was humanly possible.

Better O-line. You can't put out turnstiles like DuCasse and Zuttah and have defenses take you serious. Talent evaluation on the front line is pathetic but don't get me started on Castillo.

Healthier knee better chemistry? First I will buy the knee thing as it was obvious he was moving better. So let's see his butt out there with Perriman, Wallace, Campanaro, etc... During the off-season. That's how you build chemistry. Keep Pitta away, he gets too much of Joe"s attention. Time at practice is too limited with ALL the receivers and when you are up the butt of your TE its hard to build chemistry with anyone else.

Joe needs to study defenses more as his football IQ is poor and I'm being nice. He needs to realize when you make 120 mil. Your job starts earlier than everyone else, it lasts longer than anyone else, it is on off days and the off-season something you need to devote time to constantly. When Flacco says after the season is over he puts football aside for a couple months and about a month before going back he starts throwing again. That is not an acceptable attitude or expected work ethic for a 120 mil. player.

Playmakers. We had playmakers this year. Our RB are very good. 5+ yards averages in most games, we just don't give them the ball. SSS is a playmaker, Wallace was dynamite under Trestman, Perriman didn't have enough targets to develop because Joe checked his #1 reciever and if he wasn't open he just dumped it off. Joe was horrible in the pocket this year, really bad. No awareness, no movement, just really pathetic looking at times when he just folded into a fetal position even when no one was close.

Perriman had targets, but he turned the wrong way or was out of position. Even his touchdown against Cleveland looked awkward. He needs to get In sync with his routes if he wants more catches.

He needs better coaching and more playing Time this was the guys first year 4 TD's and played sparingly

Flacco should have bought Perriman a JUGS machine as well as Waller and Chris Moore with a note, "Use this until you meet me on this high school football field in March. Then use it after our practice sessions. Film your workouts and if you can catch 100 passes from it in a row without dropping one I will give you "X"."

Delvin Cook - RB -FSU... boy would he change our team and change it right now. He has the speed to be a home run every time that he touches the ball and in an offense that throws to its RBs a lot... I would love to put him 1 on 1 with LBs and take that mismatch. Boy would he open up our running and passing games and BTW be a great compliment to the power running style of Kenneth Dixon.

Bottom line.... Joe has a lot of work to do

1. I agree that the OL is a factor but he had decent protection and elite QBs still find ways to move the team and manage the pocket. I was super impressed with Phillip Rivers this year... behind one of the worst OLs in the NFL... he gave them chances to win... and while his numbers clearly dipped as a result of poor OL play... nobody watching him play blamed that teams woes on Rivers... It was obvious who was at fault.

2. While I also agree that the knee may have been a factor... elite QBs seem to find ways to get it done minus some mobility issues. Look what Brady did his 1st year back from the same knee injury. Look what Peyton did after his neck surgery... (and while his #s also dipped he won a super bowl). Aaron Rogers, etc... the list goes on. Joe has never managed a pocket well and this year was worse bc of his lack of mobility... but that is as much of not understanding how to manage the pocket as it is... anything else.

3. Having weapons around him. Again. Look at Brady - who has no true # 1 WR and even when Gronk went down.... he just moves the team. Everyone said when Martavius Bryant went down and without Ladarius Green that Big Jen would have trouble moving that sqeeler offense... that just was not the case. I can keep going... but my point is that elite QBs make players around them better. It has always been said that Joe doesn't have weapons and it makes me think that he hasn't made them look dangerous yet.

4. Joe missed camp and timing was off with some WR.... I have to agree here... Joe and his WRs need to spend more time preparing / not just Joe and Pitta. Perriman needed to be force fed a little more.... Chris Moore also needed to be thrust into more game situations... We will need another WR in 2017 but who ever it is... they need to develop a rapport with our QB quickly. That takes work.

5. Finally .... with all that said... I do not think that Joe is elite.... but I think that we can win a super bowl or two with Joe. We already won one.... I would be greatly disappointed if he did not pick up at least one more... but he is not the type of QB who can miss training camp and the first four games and still be on top of a short list for offensive MVP. Joe can take us to the promised land and win that big one for us (he has proven that) but he has to out work everyone else. No shame in that .... most QBs are not good enough to ever lead their team to a title much less multiple titles... but 1. Joe cannot do it on his own. and 2. Joe needs to win through preparation and perspiration rather then pocket presence and proficiency.

PUT THE WORK IN JOE AND BE THAT LEADER THAT YOU ARE PAID TO BE!

On Monday, Head Coach John Harbaugh was asked whether the Ravens’ three losing seasons over the past four years is a result of having a quarterback gobbling up a large chunk of the salary cap, limiting the teams’ ability to retain key free agents or sign others off the market.

“Yes, there is no question about it,” Harbaugh said before outlining the two scenarios that successful teams typically have.

Either a team has the young quarterback who is playing well on his cheaper rookie deal with other established veterans around him, or a team has a high-priced quarterback who essentially carries the team. Yes, he takes up a lot of salary space, but he is supposed to raise the level of those lower-priced players around him.

So the truth is finally confirmed by the coach huh?

Exactly, we don't need another young WR. We're already trying to develop plenty of pass catchers. We need a vet who can contribute now.

I think the players make the coaches more than the coaches make the players. Coaching is for discipline, recognizing talent, kicking or going for it, scheme, but the players have to make the plays.

Good point about coaches and players. Top tier QB's have high IQs which is why Joe will never be top tier. But I wouldn't call him below average. He has the athletic ability and size but the light burns weak behind them eyes. He is, however, grossly overpaid for a better than average QB.with a low IQ and a savy Agent. Ravens Front Office exhibits a habit of making bad decisions regarding the QB after winning Superbowl's.
