[News] Ravens Retain Offensive Coordinator Marty Mornhinweg

well at the very least if harbs choices sink his ship than we will have a new coach in 2018.

Can't wait

Harbs, just put his job on the line with this call. We've had 5 OC's in the last 5 years. Isn't it the head coach, who select the best coaches for the job. I will keep saying the same, Harbaugh keeps dipping into the old boy network for coaches. Bring in some young coaches, remember, they did that with YOU. The Ravens need to get younger with players and coaches.

the thing about consistency is im not sure it works at a coordinator level unless you are going deep in the playoffs every year - if you have a good season but dont go deep in the playoffs the coordinators are likely going to become head coaching candidates leaving the only remaining candidates being those still coaching because their team is doing well or those whose teams/units have not done well

Marty is old school and the league has changed. Vanilla in today's NFL will get a team to 6 -10. Horrible play caller , no creativity, no adjusting in the middle of the game. Disappointed to say the least.

Apologies for being long winded.

Now frustration is starting to kick in. I'm almost always an optimist regarding the ravens as I have a lot of faith in our front office, but the status quo wasn't CLOSE to being good enough this year, so lets keep the same?

Sadly, Joe is completely oblivious to his own shortcomings (and the offenses as a whole for that matter)... Its honestly insulting that he thinks the Raven's Flock is THAT stupid to accept such an answer; that situations dictated abandoning the run game all year leading to the skewed stats. News Flash, ravens fans know football and were tired of hearing the same crap out of your mouth when the games that we are watching with our own eyes don't support your comments? All Joe wants is to have the stats so that the sports world will finally call him an elite quarterback. his answer to the play call that almost cost us the Philly game is as close to admittance as you'll ever see when using coach/player speak.

My eternal optimist side is saying that perhaps Morningwheg was handicapped by Trestman's flawed offense and had no choice but to tailor his game-plan accordingly, but his history as an OC suggests otherwise. If we do not have a hammering run game next year, complimented by play action and explosive plays, Harbs gets the door. Much less optimism after listening to his press conference this morning.

Marty Mornhinweg: 'That's Not The Worst Call I've Ever Made' Thanks John for giving Marty more time to top that.

One could argue that Flacco just padded his stats this season. Mr. Check Down. Unreal how many check downs he did this season. Has speed on the outside. Had Steve over the middle. Pathetic.

Agree with you for the most part. Maybe toss Wallace in. Some Fans over evaluate talent just like the coaching staff does. We have a few IMPACT Players and LOTS of Roster Fillers.

Wallace leads the team in 50+ yard receptions, that sounds like a playmaker to me. Kyle is the best fullback per pro football focus. So I'd give him three on his list including Smith Sr.

I like Wallace but he's just not that, "playmaker" cat to me.

Going forward w/o SSS, would you guys consider Wallace to be your "go to guy?"

No. But you don't have to be a "go to guy" to be a playmaker. Wallace is a playmaker. Without SSS, our go to would be Pitta.

Our go to guy is already, run 3 yards and turn around, catch and fall down Pitta!

Well apart from the fact that John Harbaugh has chosen Hara-kiri as his 2017 strategy, it is sad that the Baltimore Ravens have to be part of this 'Sepukku'. He is proving to be too dogmatic to be successful as a head coach. He seems to take comfort with familiarity no matter the outcome. So, here's to the demise of our Baltimore Ravens defensive identity and say hello to our failed new identity - the constant pass throwing but not necessarily completing 3 and out juggernaut of 2017!

Harbaugh relies too much on the OLD BOY NETWORK. How long was Morningweg and Pees, out of league. Both were mediocre in their last jobs. As a manger, you need to infuse new blood in organization.

I'd even take Lane Kiffin at this point. Did I really say that, Yikes.

I think my frustration comes from the fact that we keep hiring older OCs - where they either succeed or dont - id be more inclined to be patient as a fan if the OC was someone who had progressed through the offensive coaching system and taken on the mantle as a promotion type deal - i think it says something about our model at the moment that no one moves through the system on an ever-changing offensive coaching roster - the ravens OC position has become a stepping stone for offensive-minded former head coaches who want to get back in the game

that being said i always favour consistency over needless change - one look at the pool of talent elsewhere leaves much to be desired and all the best offensive minds are either going to be offered head coaching jobs or will already be in an OC position at another team - and why switch teams for no apparent reason

if we had our own anthony lynn or jimbob cooter id be ok with getting rid of marty but it has to be said- who do you replace marty with if he does go

who cares about throwing for 4000 yards when you can't hit wide open receivers or get the ball down the field. that's like saying a RB rushed for a 1000 yards but averaged 2.0 yards a carry. I would like someone to list Flacco's strengths, because putting in extra work sure isn't one of them

I have to get anew TV. I did not see a wide open receiver in 16 games.

You need glasses sir, a lot of open receivers but Flacco became the king of the check down. Most of the time he was one read then check down, by the end of the season Smith Sr. And Wallace were being just lazy on routes knowing Flacco wouldn't even look at them. That doesn't happen unless you leave people wide open a lot.

The West Coast offense is predicated on timing routes and anticipatory throws - throwing a receiver open or releasing the ball before he makes his break. Joe has shown very little ability to do either. He relies on his arm strength to drill the ball in to a clearly wide open guy (which doesn't last long), and try to err on the safe side by hitting the guy low or outright overthrowing him.

Kubiak's offense was a good fit because the commitment to the running game enabled a consistent play action passing that resulted in more clearly wide open receivers as defenders had to always keep an eye on the backfield.

Best summation yet!. How did we end up with West Coast offensive coordinators when the Ravens are a run first, Play Action, play good defense team. Oh, that's right the Head Coaches BFF.

As a life long Raven fan who lives in South Carolina, I don't have the option of saying things like I will cancel my season tickets, or I will never pay another penny to attend a Raven game, but I do have the option of dropping Direct TV's Sunday ticket, and that is precisely what I intend to do. It is apparent to the entire football viewing world that Harbaugh is only going to hire his good buddies as coaches, and hope that they will somehow pull a rabbit out of their butt and all of a sudden become good coordinators. Anyone that watches Raven games can see the problem for what it is. The offensive line is one of the weakest in the NFL, and not only do they not pass protect, but they are unable to create holes for the RB's. Flacco has about as much leadership ability as Elmer Fudd. He does nothing to inspire his team mates, and just does not have that fire in the belly that all great Quarterbacks possess. Defensively, there is not a team in the NFL that fears playing them. If the little sisters of the poor had a football team with a QB that could deliver deliver passes, they would salivate over the chance to play against this secondary. Pass rush, what pass rush? And Harbaughs answer is to keep his buddies employed, give me a break. Good luck Raven fans, I'm done.

How can anybody really blame you? It is downright depressing to be a Ravens fan at this juncture. It seems like Mr. Bisciotti cares more about Harbaugh than he does the fan base. In any case, thank you for being a Ravens fan for so long. With this inexplicable move of keeping the coaching unit unchanged, the Ravens have assured a reduction in their fan base especially those outside Baltimore which in turn will impact the value of the Ravens as a franchise. The popularity of franchises mean a lot to ownership typically and its directly related to performance and fan input. So, it is really strange that the Ravens aren't paying any attention to the fans.

I am as big a ravens fan as anyone, but there is more to life than football and the Ravens winning...

With that being said, we need more than just continuity in the coaching ranks, which, I assume is why they took the first step in keeping Mornhinweg. More than that, we need players on the OL who can stay healthy, we need quality depth at certain positions, we need to upgrade at WR in-particular, and we need Joe to have a fully healthy off-season. We had some decent players this year, but as I saw all year, we really need some play makers on the outside who can earn Joe's trust. As much as I want Perriman to succeed, he really needs to improve his hands and route running, or else he will flame-out in short order.

Funny you mention that, because I did like a lot of what I saw from Perriman this year. I like that he actually can produce good catches, has speed and notched a couple of TDs finally, as a 1st round pick should do. At the same time, he needs a lot more consistency because some days he was doing great and others he wasn't, dropping passes that hit him right in the numbers. Though I guess this could be chalked up to him still playing his rookie season and is learning as the game goes on. Oh well, 2017's a whole new year so I'm praying that he emerges into that big WR that the Ravens desperately needed and maybe even get this monkey off our back when it comes to drafting wideouts.

Steelers and Bengals will be 10 win teams next year. Ravens playing at Green Bay , Tennessee , Minnesota and Oakland will be lucky to win 5 games next year with this 1990's coaching staff and roster. Very disappointed in Steve.

It's totally impossible to make any sensible predictions for next season now. We won't even know their rosters in more than half a year...

I've seen enough to make an educated prediction about next season.

Me to another 8-8 or 9-7 at best I don't know why steve B would give it another year clearly harbaugh likes his buddies but at the expense of paying fans and another year

Harbaugh has decided that he's going ride this ship to the end. He said he is not worried about his job security, which let's me know that the owner is ok with what he sees. We as fans can only hope things go well for this team in the near future

I have my doubts and I really think "this thing" is not going to end well. Hope I am wrong.

definitely need to bring in a qb coach to help a 9 going on 10 year veteran qb with his mechanics but it is needed

Gary Kubiak, was the only coach who control Flaccko. Too bad he's sick and giving up coaching.

Marty's last head coach tenure was 2001-2002 with the Detroit Lions, he was 5-27 in that time period. Before he came here, he spent 2013-2014 with the Jets, and before that he was with the Eagles from 2003-2012, as an assistant and then OC later on.

Dean Pees was never a head coach in the NFL. His last head coaching job was with Kent State from 1998-2003 and then he spent the next 6 years as a defensive coach to the Pats.

Here is what Mary considers his worse call. "His most notable moment as a head coach came during a 2002 game against the Chicago Bears. The game went into overtime, and the Lions won the ensuing coin toss. However, Mornhinweg felt that having the wind in his favor was more important than getting the ball, despite having Jason Hanson (who hit a then-NCAA record 62-yard field goal in his college days at Washington State University) as his kicker. He elected to kick, rather than receive. As it turned out, the Lions never got the ball; on the Bears' opening drive, Chicago scored a field goal to win the game" Yea this guy is real bright.

Look Marty Morningweg was brought in to be a QB coach, something I think he excels at. As OC he did alright, given a mid-season rush to take over and do things his way (correct things).

I agree he should stay, but as the QB coach and not OC. Now there is a gap at QB coach, which is sorely needed. Flacco's mechanics seemed to regress this past season (overall).

An improvement in offense, over the lack luster offense Trestman implemented, is not saying a whole lot. Heck, I could have improved upon that.

How can sitting below .500 mark in offensive production be a good thing? This team has all kinds of playmakers, yet you rarely were reminded of that fact save for maybe one or two games this season.

Since John Harbaugh already made up his mind, who is he going to get for a QB coach, that is going to help Flacco correct his mechanics again? Don't tell me he doesn't need a lot of coaching and correcting. His fakes tend to fake himself out more than the defense and his anticipation disappears for stretches. He needs a drill sergeant type QB coach who is going to put a sense of urgency into every thing Joe does on the field.

If a good QB coach isn't to be found, then at the very least put some pressure on him to succeed, since the best play from Joe comes when he is under pressure to perform (playing for his future and contract). Look what happened when Ray Lewis tore him a strip. Whoa he got mad and actually played up to his potential. Ray's words may have seemed harsh, but they were true, and look what resulted. Joe doesn't get himself up so much as being challenged outright does. Talk to Ray and put him on contract to call, email or whatever Joe the day before a game and challenge him.

P.S. - Marty, you have one of the best FB's in the NFL, of which only a small handful of teams have a FB at all. Use the FB more. This is a team that used to pride itself on running the football down opponents throats even when they knew it was coming. Also, tell Juan Castillo his run blocking schemes are gone. They only served to regress the run game every year since being implemented. Go back to the zone stretch run blocking, it is simpler and allows for players to play faster with less to concern themselves with.

I'm fine with keeping Marty (for now). I was also fine with keeping Trestman at the end of last season, and I believe now that this was not the correct thing to do. So who knows. But I'm mystified about why we would keep Pees. His defense really let us down in the home stretch of this season. After Week 10, this team was in first place and had a winning record, one game up on the Steelers with the tie-breaker in hand so far. The defense was the reason for the early success, yes. Through 10 weeks, they were tied for 3rd in points allowed and #1 in yards allowed per game.

So this was when we needed the team to kick into gear and do some damage and claim our division title.

But from week 11 to the end of the season, the defense ranked tied for 17th in points allowed and all the way down at 28th (!!!!) in yards allowed per game.

Meanwhile the offense had improved from tied for 24th in points scored during the first 10 weeks to 13th during the span of the final 7 weeks. And from 25th in yards to 11th in yards. Flacco's QB Rating was over 90 from week 11 to the end of the year, despite an absurd quantity of plays where his receivers let him down leading to incompletions (many that would have been touchdowns) or interceptions that should not have occurred. He wasn't perfect! It's sad that I have to make that caveat, because some folks here will say "But what about that interception at the end of the Philly game!" OK. He had an ugly play there, that's for damn sure. Point me in the direction of the QB who didn't have a single ugly play over that span of 7 weeks?

OK, so perhaps the answer is Aaron Rodgers, haha. That's the only one I can think of that MIGHT qualify. And even for him, the best in the game, it's still an eyepopping fact that we might consider him to have been flawless over the past 7 weeks. So it doesn't matter that Flacco wasn't literally perfect. If you require that of your QB in order to win games, then your team needs some work in a lot of areas, just as this team does. Flacco was good, making lots of plays, but it wasn't always easy situations presented for him on the field in those weeks but was still overall putting up better personal numbers, and the offense along with him better numbers, while the defense collapsed.

I'm very upset that Dean Pees is still here.

You all did not think John would fire his friend did you?

Thank you, another like mind. The ravens are not a charitable organization. I thought only politicians gave jobs to their friends and cronies. Harbaugh wants to show he's a nice guy, by hiring his friends.

OK, if that's the decision, then that's the decision.
There's one thing I was sorely missing from Harbaugh's presser: we all know the good old definition of craziness: to do the same thing expecting a different result. As I wouldn't want to feel crazy, I would welcome an explanation from Harbaugh: if the O remains the same, why should we expect a different result than past season. Actually, "this season" - but for the Ravens it's the past season...

So, John: if the O is going to be the same, what should we fans base our hopes of a better-than-mediocre offense, and a QB that actually looks like he cares when out on the field?

I think that is the question and the topic we should be discussing. If we keep the same coaching staff, what is the plan next year to be better and be in playoffs? I hope the Harb and the FO will give us some information to ease the frustration of the fans. I hope also the writers, Ryan, Garrett, Sarah all give us some information. Harbs should be in the podcast lounge, I hope they push him to us some information on what will change next year. Because we are keeping the same staffs does not mean we are doing the same thing.

Wallace is a decent receiver but definitely not a "go to guy" or a legit "playmaker" in my personal view.  Now that SSS is gone....which receiver can you truly hang your hat on and say hands down that "this cat brings it every game?"

Interesting!  Because in my view, Antonio Brown fits the category of being a "go to guy," "speedster" and "playmaker" all rolled up into one.  And a few other receivers fit that description to me as well (i.e. Julio Jones, A.J. Green).

Understand the frustration. Our offense was awful at times, but at other times, they looked great. Consistency is key to being successful in any pro sport. Over the last couple weeks (except this past Sunday) our offense looked better than most of the season. We moved the ball great against Pittsburg. My biggest issue with us all season was finishing drives. We were terrible in converting nice drives into touchdowns, and that's the difference between being 8-8 or 11-5. We left 10-14 points off the board against the Steelers. I want to see us run the football more. Flacco is more successful with a good running game, we can't lead the league in pass attempts, that a recipe for losing. Our offensive line actually wasn't bad when full strength. Stanley graded out as the best LT (pass protection at least) in the league the past 4 games before Sunday. Yanda is the best guard in the league, doesn't matter which side. Zuttah made some boneheaded plays, but he is better than fans give him credit for. Ducassae (spelling?) did a decent job filling the void for Alex Lewis or Yanda for that matter. And Rick Wagner played very well until he was hurt the last few games. For a couple of weeks in the season our line was filled with guys who should never see the field, but injuries happen in this league.

Our secondary is frustrating, but we are also better than years past, and it would be nice to see Jimmy Smith stay on the field. Tavon Young was a good draft pick, we need another solid corner to help solidify our CB group. Webb is a question mark, does he stay or go. I wouldn't mind seeing us draft another S that provides some more playmaking ability and speed on the back end. Weddle had a great year. Nice pick up.

Yes, Pass rush is an issue. We need a young speed rusher off the edge. I really don't care if they are an edge setter, we just need a pure pass rusher. Doom and Suggs are on their last legs.

I like Pees as our DC. Is he to conservative at times? It may seem like it. But what can you do when you design nice blitz calls but then you have matchup problems or the offense just picks the blitz up nicely. What can you do when you try to drop 7 in coverage and rush 4 but they don't get there? You can't give a QB all day, and its hard to blitz when QBs get the ball our so quick or just win the battle sometimes. You're going to lose some battles plain and simple. The offense has been game planning for our defense as well.

I was down for letting Marty go, but I'm also not angry about keeping him. Let's see what happens this year. Hopefully we run the ball more effectively.

One last thing, can we just drop the discussions about Flacco's leadership. It's been 9 seasons now, and he isn't going to change now. I'd play for him though. I haven't seen Flacco confront guys for dropping passes, yell at lineman for getting him crushed, or call guys out publicly. He takes a beating, get right back up. His WRs drop a pass, he isn't scared to come right back to them, and if he has an issue with someone, he is man enough to discuss it but not publicly. Is he the best in the league? Obviously not. But he is our QB, good enough to win big games, proven that already, and can deliver when it matters. I'm going to defend him as long as he is wearing purple and black.

Last thing, I don't care how bad of a season the Ravens have, I won't give up on them. I'm a fan until I die, and hell I might get buried with a purple and black casket with a Ravens logo. I believe we will turn it around soon. We had a great draft class this past season, a couple core pieces in place, and a hell of a coach. We are close, just not there yet and they know that. So, don't let the door hit ya in the butt walking out of Ravens Nation. We don't need ya.

don't kid yourself into thinking this team is close. they could have been 5-11 easily. we barely can beat the browns and jags. flacco cannot make an audible to change a play and we are paying him 24 million dollars. furthermore, they have invested first round picks the past 2 years to help Joe plus paid Wallace, and yet the offense is getting worse. that does not add up to a good football team.

No kidding we could have been 5-11. We could have been 11-5 if we finish against the Raiders, Redskins, and Steelers. You could say that about every team in the league. We were average, at best. We can play with anyone in the league, but we can also lose to anyone in the league. I believe we are close, I guess we will find out.

antonio brown is not just a speedster - he's one of the best route runners i've ever seen, has twitch quickness not just high top speed and has an innate ability to find the soft spot in the zone - he is a "go to guy" not because he is a speedster but because he is arguably the best receiver in the nfl - there isnt really a comparison with wallace other than the fact that he got paid money that the steelers wouldnt have had if they'd paid wallace instead

So let's take a stroll down Martyball OC Memory Lane.

2011 - Eagles:  8-8, 280 pts (last in division)

2012 - Eagles:  4-12, 280 pts (last in division)

2013 - Jets:  8-8, 290 pts (last in division)

2014 - Jets:  4-12, 283 pts. (last in division)

See any patterns?
