Candidates to be the next defensive coordinator

48 posts in this topic

After giving up huge late plays to the Pats, the near meltdown against the Eagles, the complete meltdown against the Steelers, and the defense not showing up against the Bengals, I think Pees is just as likely to go as Marty at this point. That does bring up the question of who else could we get to be the DC though. Right now Gus Bradley is probably the best bet.

It seems Gus likely has plans elsewhere. So, poaching someone like Bob Sanders or Nick Rapone from the Cards seems like a good idea. They have a fast, aggressive, opportunistic defense. The type I'd want to see in Baltimore.

It's already been reported that Gus Bradley is a package deal with Anthony Lynn, wherever he ends up as the HC.

Well then, guess that idea is out the window.

Maybe someone like Bob Sanders or Nick Rapone from the Cards could be a good hire. They run a really good 3-4 defense that's really opportunistic.

Maybe its me, but not a fan of Bradley.  Think he got that deal on the strength of a great personnel.  Who knows though.

Pees isn't going to be fired, even though the defense did terribly to end the season, we were in contention to be the top unit for most of the season. Even if you want him gone, and believe me we all do, he won't be fired after an overall successful campaign all things considered.

If he does leave for one reason or another then I fully expect us to just promote Leslie Frazier, we've dealt with D coordinator internally for quite some time now, I don't know if we've ever had a D coordinator that wasn't a position coach for the team before hand.

It sounds like he's more likely to retire than get fired, and retirement is a real possibility.

If kubiak goes, wade Philips might be out depending on what the new head coach wants. I'd look at him

IN an ideal world we clean out the Broncos staff on O and D...

Won't mean much without a good rusher though.

His ego is to big to just be a DC again, and if he did come back it would only be a year till he was offered a HC job and left

I think Rex is done as a HC personally. I'm not gonna disagree about his ego at all, but I think Buffalo was his last chance in the eyes of the league.

Frazier has been a very solid DC in the past. I'd be happy with that.

He could easily get a college gig though if he doesn't mind going that route. There's plenty of teams in the top 100 ranking in college football that would probably go for Rex Ryan to be their HC if given a chance.

Don't tease me until Pees is gone I got my hopes up to find he hasn't been fired yet. Leslie Frasier is the guy I would want although I like the idea of one of the Cards coaches but Frasier would be my choice

THIS.
Pees is far from perfect, but man we can do A LOT WORSE.  I really think some talent adjustment and some scheme tweaking is in order for sure, but Pees is no idiot.  I REALLY don't think he is proud nor pleased with the second half of the season.

And the Rex fans, without going back ten years give me some glimmer of evidence that Rex can be an outstanding D.C.
I personally don't think he has it.

The yungins only know him as a failed HC, not as a feared DC, and probably not a clue who Buddy Ryan was, and were not around to see the 85 Bears D

News flash, there are defensive coaches out there who actually know how to create blitz schemes with lesser talent than we gave, and dont rely on a Prevent to win games

Dean Pees will be our DC moving forward. Anyone who thinks elsewise, doesn't get it.

I'm not the biggest fan of Rex's personality, but I think it would be interesting to see what we could do with more exotic blitz packages, which was what Rex was known for. If we don't have the players on hand, then we'd better get creative if we're going to get any kind of pressure. My "Ravens Football" comment was made half jokingly but I do miss when we played a more aggressive style of football on the defensive side of the ball. Pees has always just felt kind of vanilla to me, but I guess it's easy to say that now when we'd been jaded with playmakers like Ed Reed for a decade. I agree that Pees is not an idiot and we'll see what happens. It'll be interesting to see what this defense can do with more depth in the secondary and an improved pass rush but what happened in Pittsburgh is absolutely inexcusable and if that trend continues into next season, Pees needs to be let go for sure.

Leslie Frazier I know has been discussed and I agree would be a contender for the job but another candidate that I think is an interesting one would be Wink Martindale, if they want to promote from within. His players love him and he's been a coordinator in this league before.

I forgot Leslie Frazier was even here. That Tampa defense is weird, not sure if we even have the personnel for it.

If that happens, what I get is that we will remain the also rans we've been ever since his arrival.

We'll do what we always do - while everyone is doing their firing & contacting of potential replacements today - we'll wait around until next week or the week after - and then we'll wonder why there are no decent candidates left. Or we'll stand pat because there are no decent candidates left.

We can also do A LOT BETTER. You good with mediocrity Dog. :)

Watch that GB game last night. Lions down by 14 with 2 min left. GB comes out in hard man to man with their top 2 CBs already out. Gave up some yds but they stopped them. No way Pees would have did that.

Found this to be interesting as I had not heard of the possibility of Pees retiring. It is Preston though so tough to tell for sure

If Dean Pees retires, linebackcers coach Don "Wink" Martindale has shot at becoming new Ravens D-Coordinator.

Sounds like a typical Preston throwing at the wall, hoping it sticks.

Well I don't see Pees being let go after his statistically best defense but if the Colts were to pull the trigger on Pagano and he wanted to return to Baltimore he could should be hired immediately.

Heck I'd be fine with them bringing Pagano in under some fake title assistant DB specialist while he pulls the strings.

I would let the new head coach pick the defensive coordinator.  It makes no sense to fire the coordinators but keep the head coach.  What kind of coordinator is going to sign on with Harbaugh on the hot seat?
