Should Ravens focus on building an Elite Offense or Defense?

I truly believe Ronnie Stanley was the best player on the board when the team picked at #6. I hated the pick because no one wants to see a LT taken at #6, but seriously everyone that I wanted more was taken. I really think BPA and need lined up perfectly last year at #6, but still wanted Bosa and Ramsey before.

Why wouldn't you want a Left Tackle at 6?  Most of the good left tackles are taken early in the first.  Hopefully we won't be drafting in the top ten any time soon.  Get one when you get the chance.  Ogden was picked 4th overall, Mckninnie 7th overall, and Eugene Monroe 8th overall.

Probably because oline is never the sexy pick I guess - it's necessary but never feels exciting - a good left tackle feels like having a safe home and 401k, a good other prospect (say e.g. wideout) feels like an exciting adventure - one is obviously more attractive but the other might be more valuable

I don't think the team cares about how sexy a pick is. They felt Stanley was the best LT prospect. To me the talent level drop off after Stanely was enormous. The only other player I would have taken at the pick would have been Tunsil who had character issues and I still think Stanley was the overall better choice just because he came from a safer system and his mobility was very good on the edge. If Stanley were somehow not there and the others were still off the board I would have cried for the team to trade back (even though I don't think anybody else would have). In hindsight Conklin has been good but I don't think anybody thought he was going to be as good as he was his rookie season. Shaq Lawson was up there but I still think he was a teens pick.

Sure need and BPA overlap a little bit. No team is going to draft 12 quarterbacks because they are the best talent level for their position compared to players at other positions. But if someone like Myles Jack or Jaylon Smith were not injured I wouldn't be surprised if the team would have jumped on them instead. They were top tier talent but their injuries dropped them and the verdict is still out if they will last in the NFL an extended period. Even though ILB was also a need, it was definitely less of a need than LT. It just worked out for the team this last offseason that their biggest need and BPA were the same.

You could argue more that they drafted for need in 2015 and 2013 for Perriman and Elam respectively, but that would all depend on how their draft board was built. It gets harder the later the pick is to predict which player will be picked. But as of last year the talent level was pretty clear and outside of those top quarterbacks taken the consensus was pretty much the elite talent level players were Bosa, Ramsey, Stanley, Ezekiel Elliot and Tunsil. (Not counting injured J. Smith and M. Jack who were definitely projected to fall because of injuries).

Wade Philips should be available soon....just saying

He should be available now. Vance Joseph probably isnt going to want a strong DC with his own defense and ideas.

But someone else is going to offer him a DC role right away. So he wont accept a position coach role, so we wont be able to get him.
