Guess Harbaugh is due for 13-3 next season in that case.

However, 2004 and 2005 Ray Lewis was a victim of the Madden Curse (2004 the real year he had no interceptions and then the actual year of 2005 he missed half the season!)  so you can't count that against Billick! :

While Lewis’ season following his debut as the Madden NFL 2005 cover athlete wasn’t exactly terrible, the usually reliable linebacker failed to record a single interception in the 2004 season – the first time that had ever happened in his long

career. The Ravens also failed to make the playoffs for the first time in several years, and in Week 6 of the following season, Lewis tore his right hamstring, forcing him to end his season abruptly.

The Madden curse isn't a real thing. That's been debunked several times over already.

What did Billick ever win without Ray Lewis?  LOL!

We could say the same about Harbs....

Though the defenses he had in Cincinnati weren't overly impressive...

Well, he has the run the team and defense which are impossible task to excel.  It's like tell Dick LeBeau to run team and the defense; you know the result.....

I think when/ if Marvin Lewis gets fired we should atleast kick the tires on him to see if he's interested in the DC position. But we might already have the answer in- house in Leslie Frazier?

From everything I heard, Lewis would likely become the Bengals GM if he left as HC. The family apparently loves him and he loves them.

Also not true. He's had a DC running his defenses for much of his tenure. Specifically, he had one Mike Zimmer running his defenses from 08-13, which was largely the peak of the resurgence of their defense.

Cool. There's also been several players who have been on the Madden Cover and went on to have highly productive seasons the following year.

So is it a coincidence that they were very good the next season as well?

It's fun to talk about the Madden curse (as one who talks about said curse), but the reality is that it's similar to being on the cove of SI - the athlete's already at such a high point in their career that sadly the only way to go is down (or staying at that height as a best case). Though talking about it doesn't necessarily mean you believe wholesale in it either - like I say it's just interesting to talk about, especially when a Steeler gets on there. :P

The number of players on the Madden Cover that got injured that particular season far outweighs the players on the Madden Cover that went on to have productive seasons the following year.

Although I don't believe in curses....again...to me...it is a very interesting coincidence that the athlete on the cover actually gets injured that season or their production noticeably drops off.  Gronk is the cover athlete this season.  And....we know the rest!

So some players have bad years, and others have good years... and that is the barometer for calling something a curse?

If that's the basis you guys are going with, then you're setting the bar unbelievably low there. I wouldn't expect a curse to be so selectively biased, especially when its not actually a real thing.

Some?  Try most.

The legend of the Madden Curse has grown from a simple joke to the sort of superstition that has fans aggressively campaigning to keep their teams’ stars off the game’s cover. It started in 1998 when Garrison Hearst appeared on the cover of a Madden NFL 99, then proceeded to break his ankle shortly thereafter. Of the 19 players who have graced the cover Madden games prior to this season, 17 have had troubling or abruptly shortened seasons following their cover debut — including several who suffered season-ending injuries shortly after their game hit shelves.

And yet apparently the "curse" is selectively biased. I personally wouldn't expect a "curse" to discriminate or be so inconsistent, but you're acknowledging that it is.

Again, seems like people are setting the bar pretty low so they can get justify explaining something they can't explain (which really isn't that hard to explain honestly... its called NFL players get hurt often).

I rank the "Madden Curse" right up there with the "Harbaugh doghouse" and "Santa Claus". Nice bedtime story I'll tell my son one day, but eventually he will figure out reality on his own.

90% is pretty consistent.  Perhaps the 2 who escaped just had stronger karma.

I'm not saying I believe in curses, but I can understand and accept that many people do.  Arguing beliefs is a pointless exercise.

If, and that's a big IF, we moved on from harbaugh it wouldn't be to go backwards and get billick. Offense was his specialty but never performed consistently under him. Winning %age in the regular season and post season is less than harbaugh. Missed the playoffs more under billick.

Being frustrated that we missed the playoffs is no reason to rehire a guy who also struggled to make the Ravens CONSISTENTLY good

We're not addressing players having bad or good years here though.  Which I don't doubt happens to them one bit.  But, we're talking about a "specific" season. One in which involves an athlete being on the Madden Cover.

Now, once again, I don't personally believe in curses but stated that those who were on the Madden Cover and got injured "that particular season" after being on the MC was an "eerie coincidence"  did I not?

My rebuttal, to your statement in the previous post......which I also substantiated with links.....was that; while a mere handful of players who were on the Madden Cover did play well or avoided a injury, "the majority" of them succumbed to some kind of injury or low production that particular season "after" being on the Madden Cover.

That happens to be a known fact regardless as to whether or not myself, you or the injured player themselves choose not to believe in or not to call it a curse.  To say that the so-called curse was selective?  I wouldn't know about that cause agan, I don't believe in curses.  That maybe a question for one of those injured athletes to answer.

That's all I've been saying.

I find it interesting that the "majority" of players on the Madden Cover had low productivity or got injured in "that particular season."  Who knows, maybe it was in "the mind" of those who got injured that believe in curses?  We  also constantly hear about the "Rookie Wall" and the "Sophomore Slump" in the NFL.

A few weeks back Zeke from the Cowboys stated that he doesn't "believe in" the rookie wall and is ballin' out like crazy this season while other rookies hit "something."  Or maybe....it's just all in their heads perhaps like the so called, "Madden Curse?"

You want to see what an offense without talent really looks like check out some of those early 2000's teams.....seriously we went to the playoffs with Anthony Wright as the QB, kyle boller should be enough said....travis taylor the #1 receiver... lol...

seriously.....gave Billick a broke down McNair and it is spun into 13-3. Granted the 2006 defense was amazing with two shutdown corners, but I think Boller would have had mental lapses leaving them 10-6.

So basically you agree that he's not a very good coach?

I mean what I'm hearing on this thread is that all Billick needs is a really great defense and a bunch of really good offensive talent, and he will be a great coach.

I could literally replace Billick's name with just about any coach, regardless of whether they even know anything about offense, and that statement would still be true.

Wasn't impressed with him as an "offensive guru" 10 years ago, and I certainly haven't seen anything to think I should be impressed now, especially when he's done no coaching since then.

He chose boller. He's admitted that. Your post making excuses is just stupid

They weren't the 90's cowboys. However, the lack of quarterback was the issue for Billick...we were just blessed with a great defense, but competent QB play as in executing his plan was important. McNair was competent and Billick got everything left of him.....if McNair was healthy no question we would have won it all in 2006.

13-3 with a broke down McNair. Yes the defense deserves credit....but harbaugh hit 12-4 a couple times with less defensive talent than the Billick era because Joe Flacco is a fairly competent quaterback compared to Boller and Joe Flacco has more arm strength compared to 2006 McNair.

1998 vikings were impressive...points record stood for 10years, period.

So basically you're regurgitating what I just said.

If you give Billick great offensive personnel and/or a great defense, he will be a good coach.

That's NOT a guy I want to hire. And it appears he's not a guy ANY team has wanted to hire for the last decade.

He collected 4 more years of paychecks from Bisciotti. Got a nice gig as a TV analyst. And how do you know nobody wanted to hire him? Not all discussions are public. Whats Jon Gruden,Dungy and Cowher's excuses?

Well, for starters, he's openly discussed wanting to be a HC again, and he's obviously in no position to be "selective" with who he wants to coach, so he wants to be a coach but he's not a coach. What conclusion do you draw from that?

While I agree that not all discussions are public, that means that neither of us has that information. So if I say no team wants him, you can't really prove me right or wrong, because you don't have the information to do that.

Gruden's excuse seems to be quite obvious... he's like the highest paid analyst on TV and likes doing it. Dungy has said numerous times he's not interested in coaching right now, and Cowher is in a similar position to Dungy.

personnel is important to every NFL coach! How many teams have an amazing development program? If anything during the Billick era you can say he was up there with Belichick in terms of homegrown players and homegrown coaches. Billick and the Ravens organization in general is a top 5 developer of talent and arguably top 3.

we just have not been good at developing certain positions like WR...but overall we develop a solid amount of talent.
