After Suggs Retires, Who Will Be The Next General?

61 posts in this topic

What if this is Sizzles last year? Who will take over the as the next General?

We seem to be letting our homegrown talent go the last several years, not signing our own guys to a 2nd contract.

Who will keep "The Ravens Way" going after Suggs is gone?

Some pretty big shoes to fill. Will a void be created? Are we a free agent team now? The drafts have been lean the last several years, what impact will that have in the future?

well cj is already calling the defense and is integral - he's a different kind of leader but in terms of running the defense, barring injury, he's going to be the leader of this defense for years to come

in terms of an outspoken guy, im not sure we have that guy but there's still time - we're one cocky lineman or db away from having some swagger back in terms of attitude but in terms of maintaining the ravens way, we've got guys on this defense who have won games and this year i think will do more to bring back that confidence

2016 was a terrific draft and 2014 brought in Mosely and Jernigan.  I also feel like the 2015 draft will end up with two very good starters in Perriman and Maxx.  That being said, I don't see any of these drafts having a replacement for Suggs.  Judon can rush the passer but he isn't a Suggs.  That being said there aren't many Suggs type players in the league anymore.

The 2017 draft will be focused on finding the replacements for both Doom and Suggs.  I don't think Suggs will be retiring this year.  A few weeks ago I was certain that Doom would be cut in the offseason.  Now I'm not so sure. This draft will again be focused on defense to keep the influx of talent coming in with a few good pieces on offense.

Suggs has said he will start thinking about retirement after next year I believe. Things change though so who knows. Mosley's a good leader but he's not extremely rah rah. Weddle will be here for another few years but he's not young and part of the next generation persay. Honestly i really don't know- but once sr and suggs are gone there will be a huge void and  we will lack a lot of fire that's for sure. Maybe a guy like judon will step up- who knows.

I think instead of cocky, the word SWAG comes to mind, and I think that is an earned title. We were very fortunate in having Ray, Ed, Haloti, Suggs, even before those guys, Burnett, McCrary, McCallister, and Championships.

If we can somehow dominate these next several games, and earn a playoff berth, that would go a long way with this 2016 draft class, and I am hoping to see BWill step it up and pancake Brady, in his best Goose impersonation.

The drafts have been lean? There are two starters on this defense that didn't begin their career as Ravens...Weddle and Dumervil. Wha?

In terms of the next Rah Rah guy, don't sleep on Judon. If you watch his college pregame tape you'll see a guy that doesn't shy from being a team's heartbeat. I think in 2 years once Sizzle and Doom pass the torch, Mosley will be the leader but Judon will bring the noise.

Honestly we don't have that rah rah guy. Mosley will certainly carry the flag, but he's just not that type of guy to bring the swagger. Really we don't have anyone on either side, given SR retiring, that has that cocky swagger and can back it up. Maybe we'll draft someone. Dunno but it's def concerning.

Tavon Young is pretty rowdy as well.

My vote - Tavon Young, seems like the kind of guy that can get those around him fired up and plays with a swagger that we haven't seen since... don't kill me, Ed Reed

If you've watched the wired stuff Jernigan is the guy that's always bringing the DL together and getting them fired up before the game.

Part of the equation is performance too. You have to play at an elite level to earn that type of respect. Jernigan could be on his way there.

Mosley will be the futures quiet leader. I see Jernigan potentially as the rah rah, energetic and loud type of leader.

But don't forget Webb/Weddle on the back end who have at least a couple years left. Mosley/Orr can be a top duo at ILB.

BWill has a lot of respect but remains to be seen what will happen in FA. Jimmy Smith commands respect.

And we've yet to really see what guys like Judon, Pierce, Tavon, Correa, Henry abd Kaufusi will be from a leadership perspective. Judon seems like he's got that confident swagger and personality about him.

And Tavon was the leader at Temple. So he's got experience there. I honestly don't see a drop off. We've got literally anywhere from 6-12 guys that it could be. And when you've got that many contributing players who know how to win and have come up under guys like Suggs they know how to hold themselves and each other accountable

I'm less worried about replacing Suggs leadership and more worried about eventually replacing his playmaking ability off the edge. Both against the run and rushing the passer.

Judon, Jernigan, Mosley, Young.

If Zadarius can ever start playing up to his potential and start commanding respect, him too, but...

By committee, Jernigan up front and for rah rah, Mosley next level, Young playing with that little man chip

Think we need to stop this choir boy business and look to add some nasty in the draft, free agency

We have our group in place - I'm sure Suggs, Mosley, Weddle can keep any hot heads in check but I think adding a bit of nasty will take this defense to the next level.

Looking for a chippy CB, a pass rushing bull and a hard hitting safety

Lets start bringing the pain and getting under their skin - true Ravens  defence

I think of Pollards hit on Ridley and most recently Thomas' hit on Gronk - we need some swag like that again, nothing dirty nothing illegal just good hard football - start putting that fear in people

We may have Thomas to thank for quite a bit depending on how this season plays out

Said it before in another thread and I'll say it again here.

Have no problem with laying the wood early and putting that fear in the other teams players, even if it costs us 15.

Nobody wants to run over the middle and guys start short arming catches - 15 yards is a small price to pay for setting a tone of intimadition and putting fear in the other team, big hits linger, in people's minds not just for one drive, or one qtr, or one game - people remember

Im sure Gronk isn't in too much of a rush to play the Seahawks again.

Were not putting that fear in anybody at the moment

Not putting that fear in anybody? I'd say Ravens are one of the more physical teams in the league easily

it's not old school smash mouth football where you're taking heads off every play because that doesn't work anymore

Honestly I think it goes back deeper than that. The players coming up are taught by the newer rules. Watch college the past few years, even they don't have big hits. I hate to say that word "millenials" but maybe it's even leaked into football. There's others that have said it. Bottom line, I think we've seen the last of the Ray Lewis type punishing hits. I'm honestly still surprised that when Pollard, one of the highest flagged guys in the league for his hits, laid out Ridley it didn't draw one. Those days are over guys. Sad as it is.

Have you seen Earl Thomas' hit on Gronk??

Between Thomas & Chancellor you know you got to earn your catches playing the Seahawks

For the short term it will be Eric Weddle. Beyond him I am not certain. We don't really have any alpha male dogs on this team that I see right now. It is hard to cultivate a persona like a Ray Lewis, an Ed Reed, or a Terrell Suggs if you aren't already that kind of guy. Mosley is a very good player and he is the captain of the defense, but I don't see him being that fiery guy who wills his team to victory. Maybe a guy like Matt Judon or Michael Pierce when they get more experience and are more full time players develop into that kind of role. You see, you have to be a prime time player and not just a character. Otherwise nobody will take you seriously. Weddle carries that kind of respect as a guy that has done it for years and is at the top of his game and one of the better guys to play the position.
