[News] Eisenberg: Veteran Leadership Is One Of Ravens' Best Attributes

8 posts in this topic

Leadership matters and Ravens are still recovering from the void it. Although they have some leaders but they are not as effective as Ray Lewis and Ed Reed were.

John Eisenberg says the whole talk of leadership is over-rated, but it cannot be overrated if it shows on the football field and affect the game.

Examples on the field of football:

1)Flacco said after the Bengals win that he could sense offense losing momentum and going conservative, and that they should have kept the foot on the gas. Instead of expressing it in the media after the game, an offensive leader should have addressed it right in the middle of the game and gotten everyone back on track. When Boldin was around, there had been a few examples when offense was not performing in the first half. Boldin rallied them and got them back on track.

2)Blowing the leads - Very rarely Ravens blew the lead until 2012. Since then it is a growing pattern. For three quarters, defense would play well, but make critical mistakes in clutch that cost the games. Even on it's worst days, Lay Lewis's defense would step up in the 4th quarter and make the big plays. Do you ever wonder that changes in the 4th quarter. It's the same players, playing with the same technique for 3 quarters. But in 4th quarter the things start to change. It's the leadership factor!

3)Technique, and learning the game - Coaches can only coach so much. Lot of time, its the players teaching each other and giving confidence to each other. That's what makes the difference in playing fundamentally and taking next step.

Go Ravens!!!

The media has begun to write about Harbs being on the hot seat if the Ravens miss the playoffs again this year citing his lack of leadership. I for one hope and believe that this is not correct. He has been a steady leader for his entire tenure and it would be wrong to hold him responsible for poor QB play and some bad draft picks and contracts given out by the FO.

Those who can DO, like Harbs, get coaching jobs. Those who CAN'T, like the media talking heads, get paid to throw crapola against the wall to see what sticks. Steve will continue to back Harbs, no matter this years outcome.

Couldn't agree more. So many of Joe's post-game comments are frustrating because he rarely takes ownership for his or the offense's lack of production. I was shocked after the loss to Dallas when Joe said "we should beat this team." No crap, Joe- so where were you when the team needed you to step up and get the offense going? You're not getting paid $120 million to rest on the laurels of SB 47. People got upset over Ray's comments about Flacco's lack of leadership, but I can't blame Ray one bit for voicing his frustration. A lot of aggravated fans can echo that same sentiment.

Agree with you and Ghani900. It's disengenious that he can be considered a leader when he can sit there and watch the team implode on game day after game day and say nothing. But he sure can say a lot when it doesn't matter.
He has thrown many OCs under the bus. Cam Cameron, and Trestman. To say he doesn't complain about players is not believable.
In my opinion the only reason anyone even brings up his name when they discuss leadership is because of the position he plays.

Agree with JE that this team has good leaders and each will lead in the way that best suits their personalities. This is the time of year when that leadership usually begins to step up and helps to mold the team. We have seen it many times before with strong runs in Dec/Jan. Hope this one can be the best yet.
