Weddle - PFF's mid-season Defensive MVP, runner up

Pretty cool. Proving to be one of our best FA signings.

Selected behind only Aaron Donald, who is just an animal and one of the most dominant defenders to come along in quite some time.

Anyways, here's their write up:

"Runner-up: Eric Weddle, S, Baltimore Ravens

Eric Weddle has been the league’s best safety for most of his career, and a change in scenery this offseason has done nothing to change that fact. He is the best-graded safety in the league in 2016 as a Baltimore Raven, with a 92.4 overall grade, the only safety to clear the 90.0-barrier. He has graded well in every facet of the game PFF measures, and has been a real difference-maker on a defense that had been crying out for an impact player in the secondary for awhile."

Pretty cool we've got a defender of that ilk again. He's upgraded the entire unit, securing the back end with both his play, pre-snap diagnosis and leadership... as well as being a wrecking ball in the box.

Coverage, tackling, leading, playmaking... the guys been doing it all.

And hes having a career resurgence of sorts. While he's always been a very good to great player, he's definitely having one of his best seasons ever.

Glad this man is a Raven. Watching him at the podium, the energy, the enthusiasm, its awesome... on the sidelines talking to everyone, getting people fired up, congratulating both the offense and defense... Its just like another Boldin, Mason, SSS, Daryl, Sharpe, Goose, etc... FA addition. These guys just fit and its like they were meant to be Ravens all along.

Tip of the cap to your Mr. Weddle. Congrats, and thank you. Baltimore recognizes and appreciates your excellence thus far.

I gotta say, Jarret Johnson REALLY helped us when he suggested we sign Lawrence Guy, he's actually shockingly solid depth, I guess the Chargers 4-3 just wasn't the right system for him.

Glad to have Weddle in our team.   Ozzie and FO nailed this one

Yea, there were some that gave em flack for it... cant spend that $ on an aging safety. It wasnt our biggest need, shouldve gone younger...

Money well spent, and the leadership this unit NEEDED in the secondary. I trust the front 7 but the secondary has been our Achilles heel the past few years. Now i have equal trust in the front end and back end.

I wonder if his role up around the line is permanent or if they will look to move him back to FS next season

if it ain't broke don't fix it, but I wouldn't mind a look at Elam at SS with Weddle sliding out the back

Weddle was tailor made for a pees defense. Honestly I was praying we got him this off season for this particular reason. And he's proving my theory right ? we needed a smart safety with anticipation and we certainly got him.

FS has been the biggest hole on this team since Ed Reed hung em up. Over the past couple years, I have felt that the secondary's talent didn't match its play and it was largely because they just didn't have that guy to be the glue. That's what Weddle is and he's making that unit greater than the sum of its parts. Of course, the emergence of Young as our 2nd CB is a boost, but you have to think that he'd not be experiencing the success he is currently having without the guidance of a guy like Weddle.

So funny how so many people hated on the Wallace and Weddle signing.  Both have given us huge dividends.   Love Weddle.... Like his beard as well.

The most impressive thing about him is that he's managed to become a team leader not through appointment, but through the players. Jimmy Smith said that he gets everybody in position on every down (High Football ID). Teammates also have said that he calls-out the opposing offenses plays before snaps (Unselfish Commitment). McClellan, Smith and others on the field said the communication was as good as it's been since Reed and Ray Lewis were the leaders of the Super Bowl defense (Team Confidence). Last but not least - he makes plays.

He's a true leader. Big UPS Eric.
