I say he is but Butkus and Lambert played in a different time so it is hard to tell. Singletary is also right there. So it is debatable.

What isn't debatable though is who was the best linebacker of all-time. Lawrence Taylor towers over all these guys. Maybe it was the drugs he used or something, but he is without a doubt the most dominant player in the history of the NFL. That guy stands all alone.

Best? Possibly.
But it would be hard to argue that any other linebacker has been more important to their team or more dominant over such a sustained period of time.

Lewis is top 5 for sure. I think Taylor at his best is number 1 though all things considered. No RB could block him. Opposing players were visibly afraid and prone to jump offside. Taylor was first guy to start swatting at ball consistently on tackles. There are still several offensive formations used regularly that were devised because of Taylor. He just changed the game in too many ways.

I can't disagree with this.

Based on his physical ability and personal stats, it's highly debatable (he's great, don't get me wrong, but so were/are a lot of others). But when you add his leadership and the emotion he brings to the team, and the fact that he has been the heart and soul of the the defense on a team that has been carried by their defense for so many years, I can't think of a linebacker that has been move valuable to an organization that Ray Lewis.

As much as I love to hate him (mostly because he is a Raven ;) ), truely, my hat is off to him. I'd easily rank him up there as "one of" the greats.

With that said, I hope he's on his back most of the game tomorrow. :P

I hate questions like this. Maybe in baseball you can measure the "best all time" because intangibles don't really play as much of a role, and all that statistics are documented, but it just doesn't work that way in football.

Was anyone around in the 70s to watch Lambert extensively? Not many people on this forum are 50+, so we're not qualified to comment.

It may not be true? I can't stand the Yankees, but their fans will tell you that Jeter isn't even a top ten Yankee... A huge New York fan, huh?

Busting on your team? Jeter not being a top ten player in franchise history is quite impressive.

well, I'll add my $.02 worth.... ;)
Im 53 years old and have followed the NFL since the early 1960's and I've seen quite a few Linebackers in my time; guys like Jack Lambert, Jack Hamm, Mike Singltary, Mike Curtis, Dick Butkus, Willie Lanier and all I have to say is that Ray Lewis IS the best I've seen in ALL forms of the game, on and off the field, a real team leader, smart, hard-hitting, talented, dedicated to the sport, player that my eyes have seen B)

Ray Lewis best of all time? Why not.

At the same time, I'd much rather play against him than against Butkus or Ray Nitschke. Those evil bastiges would bite people at the bottom of the pile for no reason other than to be savage. Growling and screaming like wild animals during plays. It was a man's game back in the day, no doubt. Much dirtier than today.

Lambert was scary, too. All scraggly, missing half his teeth.
