Don't need to run against us?

59 posts in this topic

Noticed that a few steelers media crew were stating something and I completely agree with it. Regardless of our run game D, which is excellent, when teams decide to stay in the pocket and force our pass rush to get to the QB, they can't, and throwing the ball has been a piece of cake. It happened in the the 4th quarter where the steelers said forget the run lets just throw on these guys, we've had all day.

I fear that eventually teams will realize that the run actually plays into our hands and the passing game will always be there for them as we can't get to the QB.

I was quite surprised they kept trying to run on us, particularly after the Giants gashed us.

Maybe the change up in the secondary has paid off and their receivers weren't getting separation or maybe they didn't really want Ben sitting in the pocket

be hard to gauge against the Browns, but looking forward to playing the Cowboys - to see where our defense is at

getting Mosley back was big

Seeing that we shut down one of the best offenses in the league until we switched to defense I'd be inclined to disagree. Just enjoy a win for once.

Thoroughly enjoyed, although I must admit - watching the game I was a bit intrigued by the Steelers play calling - did seem to play right into our strengths.

need to watch the coaches film, we may have had good coverage across the field and they were forced to run, or they may not have wanted Ben sitting in the pocket waiting for plays to unfold

Or maybe we switched to zone defense and gave them all of the underneath stuff to run down the clock and prevent the big play?  The pass rush does need more juice, but we had dominated them in man coverage all game.

Za'Darius smith should really not be playing a snap...

Not really. I was stating all along the Steelers lost a whole lot of talent with Martavis Bryant's suspension. The talent drop off from Bryant to their next receiver is pretty terrible. We have always done a fantastic job holding down Brown and the run has never really been an issue for this team besides an occassional game. I also knew the Bengals lost too much talent to be a playoff team in free agency. If they couldn't win a play off game with who they had last year there is no way they will this year.

Suggs also looked decent getting around their O-line which is surprising with his age and his injury. Judon was getting pressure as well. It will be harder against a team that has multiple good receivers I think we will struggle this week against the Browns even without Josh Gordon or Corey Coleman. Pryor has been pretty good this season and Hawkins has always been a solid receiver who gashed us last time. Weird to think that Hawkins is their #4 guy when he would be a #2 on almost any other team. I think Hawkins puts up a good game against us which scares me.

I'll agree. At least pass rush snaps. He is the most inefficient rusher on this team

Yeah that's now how things works. Its no secret why they had success throwing on us in the 4th quarter... its because we basically let them throw on us. We're giving them much larger cushions, mostly only rushing 4, and not really worrying about them beating us deep.

They threw the ball plenty in the first 3 quarters and didn't do it well.

I agree that the pass rush is almost non-existent, but its certainly very far from easy to throw on us. Teams know this by now.

Well when you're down 21 points in the 4th with less than 10 min to play, ummm you have to throw.

I think there might be a correlation between our defense staying on the field for a bit too long and our offense leaving the field with bad position for the defense to come back too quickly.   You are leaving the defense exhausted and leaving them out to die.

Joe flacco threw a useless pick (vs. a rookie Arty Burns who was getting chewed alive by every receiver) then went less than 50yards total on second half.   You just cannot do that.   That will kill a team on any game.

I have no idea why Smith is ahead of Judon or even Correa.

Agreed. Judon should've been starting from the beginning. Dude is beasting and is hopefully the successor to Doom

I agree with this.  Now we just need to find Suggs replacement.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if we find him in the first round of next years draft. Malik McDowell if we're picking in the latter half of the top 10, or Carroll Phillips if we win the Super Bowl :D right now either one could happen lol

Judon doesn't  have the stamina right now to be a every down player.

Did you perform a fitness test on him personally?

Take away the 3-4 amazing throws Ben had on the last 2 drives, and their offense wasnt that great.

Ben threw 2 INTs, shouldve had another 2 at least, was wildly inaccurate all day. But, theyd have throttled our D by passing more? Makes sense.

That likes saying, man... Joe really torched the Steelers D on that 95 yd pass play. We shouldve thrown it all day.... probably wouldve had 3 more 95 yd TDs.

The rest of the game completely indicates otherwise.... but, hey it makes sense to take that super tiny sample size, totally out of context and assume that if you stretch that out across a game you'll have the success the whole time. Ignore the larger sample size of complete failure...

That Small success, though!

@BOLDnPurPnBlacK I always enjoy your insight in your responses,  but it still baffles me on how much effort into to your replies to that certain poster.  Anyone who says our defense isn't a top squad doesn't watch football.

I think he's a true DE. Way too tall and lanky to to play outside in my opinion

Nope but do remember  see him  get tired and winded when he was ask to play  more snaps .Unless he somehow has developed more stamina or overall capable to handle a every down role then he's a guy you most likely want out there on obvious passing downs or come in to sub in and out with someone when needed

He's a big boy though and it's been news that he gets exhausted easily.

Why do you say that?

You may have probably seen my response by now to Arnie_Uk but I can say more.Since Matt Judon right now is The Ravens best outside pass rusher it wouldn't make sense to give him more responsibilities which comes with being a every down player such as covering, setting the edge,  and etc to go along with rushing the passer. For a rookie and especially in Matt Judon case it wouldn't help his pass rushing effectiveness and I honestly rather see a guy like Correa settling edge and more than Judon.
