Have we found the next great raven defender?

81 posts in this topic

I've been calling for him to start over Wright since early in the season.

Great young defensive talents in Young, Mosley, Jernigan and Orr.

Now draft some safeties and pass rushers.

I wouldn't say next greatest Raven defender. But he has shown a lot more than some defensive guys drafted higher in his short time here than guys like Arthur Brown has. We need to support him but remember that a small sample size can skew him to look better than he really will be over the course of his career here. He is looking better than some of the veterans we have had out there so far so it is fun to get excited but we shouldn't put his name down in pen as the starter for next season. Always look for depth.

They have drafted safeties... Elam and Brooks didn't pan out. Elam still has a chance here but he has limited time to impress us. Would be nice if he does so we can move Weddle to FS and cut Webb for cap savings or have him be our #3. I still like Kendrick Lewis his injury was unfortunate but he is talented and a smart player.

Right. But it's a position that still needs to be addressed regardless if Elam and Brooks didn't develop as expected. Weddle will be 32 next season, and Jimmy will be 29. Both are still playing at high levels, but are key positions that we need to start developing young players to take over soon.

Webb, Lewis, Wright, Dumervil, and Arrington all need to move on.

Spot on! Definitely need to continue rebuilding for the future while concentrating on the present.

so impressed with what he has done. i was concerned about his size, but this guy is real... Good call...

He's been very impressive that is for sure.  But, I still "personally" prefer the more taller and physical CB's.  But, you work with what you have. :D

What was his really bad game?

Ah, right- Giants, for sure.

I think the secondary as a whole had a bad game against the Giants. Beckham alone had over 200 yards and Tavon wasn't the only guy who was supposed to be covering him. It also was Young's first start.

The long play he gave up to OBJ was kind of strange. Weddle came flying up and threw a great block on Tavon as he was going in for the tackle.   lol

While the taller guys provide for an advantage on the jump balls and checking the taller receivers, the smaller guy is much more agile. And Tavon is plenty physical, like a pit bull!  lol  You'd be hard pressed to find a better form tackler.

Of course each type of CB is needed to do different things that goes without saying or explaining.  However, once again, my personal proclivity is towards the taller CB's.

Alrighty then.  My tendency is to like them all, as long as they can ball!   haha

He does have a lot of the same risk reward thinking  as Ed Reed. When he goes for the INT it usually could be either a great play or 7 points for the other team. I love that aggressive style. To bad he is so small or would love to see him be the same intimidating figure as Reed as well. Reed knew how to lay a hit. Cannot wait to see what a year under this kids belt brings.

I don't think it's a coincidence the pass defense went to crap when Jimmy went down.  Before his injury I think Odell had been held to 1 or 2 catches.

I think it was like 2 catches for 6 yards and a fumble.

Yes, we hardly have what you would call "deep depth" at CB.  I think it's unfair to say that Tavon's performance was "abysmal" in his first start, especially under the circumstances.

Tavon Young has quietly been performing at a level that could contend for DROY. He has performed just as the ravens had hoped when they drafted him. We saw a feisty but undersized corner, a guy who had incredible explosion and ball skills, agility to mirror guys, light on the feet, firm ankles, great change of direction. What the rest of the NFL saw? a 5'9" corner, too small for the NFL. but what we didnt know about when we drafted him, was his football IQ which is beyond his years. This kid has no wall between his head and the field, he is extremely smart and instinctive, one second hes in off coverage and then in the blink of an eye hes 10 yards downhill breaking up a pass, often anticipating the throw he has baited qb's into throws on zone drops and off coverage plays, he brings the wood on his breaks allowing him to not just go after the ball and deflect, but to secure a tackle just incase the wr makes a spectacular catch on him, but more often than not he lays down the hammer and jars the ball loose in these scenarios... He has been excellent in run support, reminiscent of a young Webb the way he flies into frame and takes a ball carriers legs out from under him. He is one of our 2 ballhawks at the moment as he and Mosley get their hands on a lot of balls and hold on to them more than anyone else.

Is it too early for this? sure, ill admit that, but this kid has been the epitome of why you dont slam ozzie on every move. we drafted this kid looking for a nickel corner, and found a fiery young stud that exceeds all expectations. If he grows and continues to improve, we have a seriously good corner on our hands here folks, and aside from his hiccups vs the giants, he has been a top 3 defender on this team with mosley and weddle. I believe that Tavon Young may possibly be the next great Ravens defender(not great as in ray lewis or ed reed, more like of a suggs/mosley caliber)

(Sarcasm) come on we haven't drafted anyone good in the last 10 years according to 80% of the boards. I agree Young has been a great find and I love his playmaking ability and could be a great player for years to come.

He reminds me alot of Webb pre second acl tear. Dude is a ball hawk and plays much bigger than his size in run support. Ozzie got a steal in the 4th. He's better than most of the guys taken in the first two rounds.

Great comparison can totally see that probably not quite at that level but getting there just hope for health

I'd like to see Young take over Webb's current role and put a taller press corner opposite of Jimmy.

Lets not move him that was the biggest issue with Elam we moved him so much it hurt performance so lets let Young play.

Exactly, let the kid keep building on his technique and performance at the position he has always played. Moving him to another position is stupidity.

I'm just gonna go ahead and bump this thread before the game even starts. I think Tavon is the type to rise to the occasion and even though many don't think he'll see a lot of Dez, I do and I think he'll perform well. Dez might have some yards in this game, but he's not gonna make a big impact and Tavon will have a lot to do with it.
