[News] Ryan Mallett Hopes Joe Flacco Can Play, But Is Preparing To Start

65 posts in this topic

Back in the early 1970's I was an avid Redskins fan before I moved to Baltimore from Washington. I vividly recall the Sonny Jorgenson / Billy Kilmer battle for who the Redskins QB was going to be each week. Are there any posters on this site that recall that? The reason I mention this is that this situation with Joe and Ryan could develop into the same sort of same-team rivalry. The two Redskins QBs were always gentlemen about it, just as Joe and Ryan are being now but still the rivalry between the Sonny and Billy fans was intense. Who else remembers this?

This is great, I wan't Flacco to sit. It's about time we found out what's truly the cause of this anemic offense. The best thing that can happen for everyone, Flacco included, is for Mallet to start and play well.

Don't think that's the case.  Maybe a few fans will be calling for Mallett.  Bottom line is Joe is our QB.  This would be 1 game.  Nobody in the Ravens organization is going to give up on a franchise QB based off the performance of a backup in 1 game.  This isn't Dallas where Dak has half a season of starts for the organization to consider....plus Flacco is WAAY more durable than Romo. *knock on wood*

Flacco's durability is in question since his knee injury and now a shoulder issue that isn't allowing him to practice all week. When have we ever heard that Flacco missed a week of practice due to an injury? Never. He is older, has taken a beating over the years and you can tell in the pocket (and I will be nice here) he is tentative. Mallet's previous issues had to do with off the field problems which appear to be resolved. I think that it will be more than a "few" fans if Mallett comes out and lights up the scoreboard. However, you are accurate in the fact that Flacco is Harbaugh's boy and no matter what, if Joe can play this year, Joe will play.

I think with Flacco's age it is time we start looking for the next franchise qb in the draft. To get a good qb we are going to have to finish like we did last year so we can get a high pick. I can honestly say, if we go 5-11, Harbaugh will be looking at QB's in the draft because his future with the Ravens is now tied to the productivity of Flacco and if we do that bad, then it is possible that Harbaugh might make a change to save his own job.

And what QB's are coming out that are worth it?

Mallets going to be the quarterback for the foreseeable future. It might be time to move on from Flacco , and think about drafting a quarterback.

I'm sure we will make Gino look like Montana after this game

The D has NOT been the problem. The QB has. Mallet does NOT hope Far Below Average Joe can play, and neither do I. Unfortunately, the Ravens are stuck with FBAJ's contract.

If we continue to have not much of a pass rush, anyone can go against us and look like Montanaesque.

This offensive scheme is a mess. It was an attempt by Trestman to adopt Kubiak's scheme to his own west coast, east-west, dink-and-dunk, pass-happy offense. In the process, he removed some of the key elements that made it a success, like a commitment to the run, having the QB under center, sliding protections, and play action passing. The result is a compromised offense without an identity and one that is fundamentally flawed. Marty, a west-coast guy like Trestman, is doing his best to call the correct plays from a playbook essentially written in pig latin.

It's not a question of QB, receivers, or O-Line. The issue starts with the entire approach to the offense.

I wouldn't mind seeing Mallett in the game, if only for a couple of sets. Joe has gotten too complacent and Harbaugh won't set him down. It might actually fire him up a bit if he gets it through his head that he is not irreplaceable. Anything would be better than the performances we have seen out of him and this so called offense so far.

Joe is not like that and you know it. He has no ego and certainly can never be called complacent. Where are all these silly comments coming from?

Wow! We've got another Flacco expert. "...he has no ego" really?

Joe Flacco is NOT playing Sunday. Neither is Ryan Fitzpatrick. Advantage has to
be with Ravens, unless their QB coach is starting. Anyone is better than Geno.
Seriously, great move by Ravens. They have Steelers coming up w/o Big Ben, so
it's better Joe heals. Also, Jets D-line is angry and could have hurt Joe bad.

Yeah Ryan Fitzpatrick is so good, and that's why they're benching him in favor of the no good Geno

Joe said the shoulder is no problem, and Harbaugh said Joe could play without practice.

Joe will have 90% of Oline as everyone is back except Yanda so he will have his best protection since 1st 3 weeks.

3-4 is unacceptable going into bye

Geno Smith 1-5 jets is easy win on paper no reason to give away victories Joe plays

If everybody on Oline starting line up plays except Yanda, that's 80% of the starting Oline

Joe is our QB. All the talk down below is a little crazy to me. Esp those of you saying Mallet should be our QB of the future over Joe. However, maybe Mallet should start this week. Our D should be able to take it to Geno and slow and old Forte. If we can sneak a W in with Mallet and get Joe 3 weeks of rest before the Pittsburgh game, that sounds great to me. Not to mention. not only are the 3 nastiest 300lb dline trio of my lifetime coming after our QB every play-Williams,Wilkerson, and Richardson. But Bowles blitzez maybe more than anybody in the league. We don't need Joe taking those hits, esp with a bum shoulder and Yanda missing.....against this Dline, yikes. If Joe was 100% and on a roll with his performance, it'd be a different story, but he's not.

Look, I like Joe but he's playing scared. Maybe because he is hurt. I don't think so. I think his head is not right. He needs to get fired up. He is constantly under throwing and for the few times he did not under throw... good things can happen. I trust Mallett and I like the way he delivers the ball. I would have NO problem resting joe through the bye week and letting Mallett play this week. It might light the fire under Joe. Go Ravens!!!

Got me, I'm old and share same history (i.e. wash to B'more).
I can't say I would mind trying to get a rivalry going. Joe seems very tentative... he should have spent time in the off-season getting on the same page... that last throw in the end zone was a perfect example... I really liked the way Mallett stepped into throws. Could piss off Joe enough to wake him from his slump. Go Ravens!

I feel bad because I really like Joe and when Troy Smith went down Joe took advantage and introduced all of us to his arm! Well Ryan Mallet mite take advantage as well and introduce us to some versatility in the pocket and more accurate passes because he revived Kamar Aiken last season and he has more starters to work with now! If they open up the field and don't have him throwing into clusters he is gonna wreak havoc on Sunday! If Joe had that Fire like Brady and that Leadership like Big Ben he would be unstoppable but I thought he was more like Aaron Rodgers just quiet and threw strikes! Smh what happened to my Gunslinger? ! I'm sorry Joe but it's time for a change! Joe we still need your support though help Ryan like Dennis Quaid helped Jamie Foxx in Any Given Sunday! Lol LETS GO!

Joe is a good quarterback, mabey not top 8 but solid. If his arm strength isn't there we should start Mallet. We get a bye after this and the Jets are the perfect team to rest him on. I don't think a controversy is what you want, we will wind up with the same circus that we are calling an election, ugh. Enough about that hot mess, I think if he is feeling sore why not give it a 2 week break.

It's not a question of QB, receivers, or O-Line. The issue starts with the entire approach to the offense.

The biggest concern is when pro bowler Marshall Yanda said, it's very confusing to zone block sometimes than pull and power on others. This means he didn't like that they switch from zone to power blocking constantly throughout the game. Yanda said it's hard to get in rhythm that way.

if harbs loses his job so should the great and powerful oz with his garbage drafts lately. where is the talent? the game changers?

"Ryan Mallett Hopes Joe Flacco Can Play" That's just dumb. Maybe 30% of Ryan does but any real man wants to MAN UP and play. He did not get Joe hurt but there is a lot of blame to go around else where.

Mallett??? Introduce all of us??? I've been watching the guy from the beginning, when he was throwing interceptions in Houston. We all are very familiar with Mallett.  There actually IS a reason he's a backup... But yeah. I guess we'll see.

Yea but the Ravens will make Geno look like the second coming of Joe Montana. You just watch and see. I would not bet Geno ends up with better stats than Joe.

We need Joe close to 100% after the by not nursing a injury. With 2 weeks off he will want to get out of the house for a while with three kids. Baby needs new shoes!

If Joe is healthy, I want him to go. He's played with soreness many times before. Plus he does have two weeks before the next game to rest. This is a AFC game that we need to win and we don't want to risk it being wasted on a backup QB.

I'm sure Ryan can just hand the ball off this game. That Joe's throwing arm and Pitts is next. Future Ravens coach? http://www.thenewstribune.com/sports/nfl/seattle-seahawks/seahawks-insider-blog/article109289627.html

You fell for PD96. I thought he was a troll earlier this year, but I had to remember to last year when he was constantly calling for Schaub to play. Lol. He just has some "out there" ideas and some which are demonstrably wrong (like Mallet being more moblie than Joe). PD96 is a good fan, just he has some really weird ideas combined with over the top passion and desire to win.

Mallet looks good when he is coached up to the max. I saw it in 2 preseason games in NE (first one terrible, second one they coached him up hard so they could squeeze a little trade value from him and then traded him to former Pats OC Bill Obrien in Texas), and then again against Pitt (when it was all hands on deck helping him, including Schaub).

Mallet has a million dollar arm, but 50 cent head.

I have faith that Mallet can get us a W - but Im much more comfortable with Joe. How about we play Joe, and actually limit his passes to about 25 throws. Which is what we SHOULD be doing anyway. Run the hell out of west and bring in  extra protection for Joe on passing downs. I'd like to see our win/loss % when Joe throws less than 30 times. I guarantee you it's MUCH higher than when he throws over 30.

We are getting key peices to our line back, and west is doing well. This is a conference game as well- and a must win before the bye to keep us above .500 and put us back in first in the division.

I'm surprised the question still hasn't been asked...is Dave Fales going to be brought up from the Practice squad? Has he been getting extra reps? BC if so that would be a tell tale sign on joes status Sunday. Will we bring up Fales to backup mallet or will Joe be kept active and just be the emergency backup? Just can't believe that question hasnt been asked...

Lol and also an over the top passion to " sling that rock" and abandon the run game all together.
