Jimmy Smith

For all the hate that Jimmy Smith gets for not being a "shutdown corner" we sure did look like dog doo without him. I say if Jimmy doesn't get concussed we win. Of course, having no pass rush and 15 penalties doesn't help but it was obvious the Giants gameplan changed as soon as Jimmy left.

I really don't understand the hate towards Jimmy. No, he's not a shut down corner, but those aren't exactly easy to come by. He's a very solid corner who pretty much had Beckham shut down before leaving the game. He locked down Amari Cooper a few weeks ago. If he's having a good day he can be a very good player. I've only seen one bad play from his this year, and that was the touchdown he allowed against the Redskins.

Yea his value certainly showed against the Giants.

And it's not just the work he did on Odell in 1on1 situations. It's the fact that the entire secondary plays differently when he's in. The safeties can help out elsewhere, feeling comfortable that Jimmy's got his side locked down.

he gives up the occasional come back and underneath type route, but he's just tough to beat deep. He's got the speed and wingspan to close space in a flash.

And it just showed that once he went out, the entire field opened up for the Giants. Our LB's and secondary had to cover sideline to sideline and vertically... and we got punished.

We need Jimmy and CJ back. And we need Stanley and Yanda back.

If we get those 4 we're in business.

Jimmy was doing work on Odell. That pass breakup he had on the deep ball where Odell got hurt was a thing of beauty.

I could be wrong, but it looked like Odell had him and it was a poorly thrown ball.  Would have to watch again which I doubt that I do.  Jimmy haters are just going to say it's a coincidence the passing game opened after he got hurt.  Dean Pees probably started calling those soft coverages again...

Was on the Giants board and someone mentioned how things changed when he went down.  Every reasonable fan had to know what was going to happen when he left the game.

He's super important to this defense. I don't know why people like to hate on him. Yeah, he's not a shutdown CB this year but he's still a good CB and I would take that over what we have without him. I hope the bench Jimmy crowd has died out.

After seeing what we are without him I sure hope so.

He's a damn good player and it sucks he got hurt because we probably win with him just like we probably win in 2014 against the Patriots

Hopefully he gets through concussion protocol because I shudder to think about what Brandon Marshall will do with our other guys.

He's not a shutdown corner but he shutdown Beckham and Cooper? I know you're defending him here but Jimmy Smith is absolutely, positively a shutdown corner. Does he get beat sometimes? Yeah he does. Name me a shutdown corner who doesn't get beat because they all do.

This is what I was saying on the GBU thread.  I don't understand the hate he gets.  If it wasn't obvious after the 2014 season, it should have been beyond obvious on Sunday watching Beckham pout with Jimmy, and do nothing but celebrate without him.  Completely night and day and flat out obvious how important he is to the secondary and the defense as a whole

Some on here would disagree with you but I am defending him here. He's obviously our best cb and I'd take him over most others in the league.

Ya now know the importance of presence of Jimmy Smith on the field? lol...Isn't it too late ever since he shut down Michael Crabtree last 3 plays of the SB championship?

When Jimmy shut down Megatron, does Megatron not the best WR in the game? as for Cooper and Beckham as well....

Our defense can't be without Mosley, Jimmy, and Weddle.....correction and Suggs too...

I know and I respectfully disagree with them. He played great in 2014, got injured in 2015 but played great before he went down and we saw life without him even then and it wasn't good. Now he's playing much better. He's had some bad plays here and there but he's definitely shutdown and playing well.

Anyone follow Jimmy's concussion condition?

I hope he got cleared to play next Sunday or Marshall will have a monster day.....

Thanks. Yeah he was recovering from his injury last year but he still looked good as the year went on and he was further removed from the injury

Concussion Protocol is a Five Step Process with the Fifth being Full Clearance. It's usually hard to get through in 1 week- Lewis got through it and was active but only for "emergency situations" and wasn't used because he didn't practice. Since Jimmy's a vet, he can play easier without practicing, but its hard to tell how quickly he'll get through the protocol since there's no timeline.

Yes, the 2nd half of the year he was getting much better, hence the rest of the d looked better as well.

I'm concerned about Jimmy's availability given that he left the game right after he returned to the field. That's a bad sign because it shows that the symptoms were too dreadful for him to play.

5 step process is difficult to get through. Concussions are usually hard to get through in the first week.

I got that feeling that it won't be quick when you got concussion; Lewis had to take 2 weeks off....

We have to win it by scoring high......

It looked like he baited the throw because if you watch again, he just hits a second gear when the ball is in the air.

Could have been a little more in front, but certainly would have been highly contested.

Lewis only missed the Oakland game, but he was active for it. Probably held out as a result of not practicing moreso than the concussion.

Was thinking he could've been trying that because even as the ball arrived, he was right there and didn't seem like he OBJ really broke stride.  Like I said though, not watching that game again.

I won't watch it again, but that was reminiscent of some plays 2014 Jimmy made. He had an awesome one against Jones week one of 2014 that was just like that, except corner of the end zone.

I think we'll start seeing more 2014 Jimmy as he moves further from that foot surgery to take the screws out.

Same, I think he's getting closer to that level. He's certainly a mile better this year than last.

This tweet by @PFF_Gordon sums it up perfectly:

Odell Beckham Jr. yesterday:

a 66 yard rec. v T. Young,

a 75 yard rec. v W Davis,

a 43 yard rec. v S. Wright.

Against J. Smith? 1 rec, 6yds
