This comes to me as a surprise, despite not going to the playoffs Gruden is a great coach. Why would they fire him?
GM Bruce Allen was also fired

I'm a little surprised too. No explanation.

Not really surprised...Gruden was never a fan favorite in Tampa despite the one SB win plus the fact Tampa felt they were well on the way to a post season birth and ended up watching their rivals Atlanta and Carolina go in instead

Well, if you think about it, Gruden's Super Bowl win in 2002 might've been a fluke, since he basically inherited Tony Dungy's team; Gruden's only real contribution to that particular squad was his coaching of veteran QB Brad Johnson. Other than that, I don't really think Gruden really did much in Tampa. He had the luxury of defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin for his entire tenure, and that defense was responsible for much of the Bucs' success.

With that said, Gruden isn't a bad coach; he fielded a talented team in Oakland, good enough to reach the Super Bowl in 2002 and qualify for the playoffs for a couple of years before that. His successor in Oakland, Bill Callahan, ironically had the benefit of merely inheriting a talented team just as Gruden did in Tampa. Callahan, of course, would turn out to be a lame-duck coach, and the Raiders would go on to do nothing after losing big in the Super Bowl.

And, it helped that Gruden knew QB Rich Gannon's tendencies in that Super Bowl -- Gannon, after all, experienced a career revival under Gruden's tutelage.

So, funny how all this works out. I can see Gruden getting another head coaching job very soon, if not a job as quarterbacks coach.
I was floored by this news. It seems to have come from out of the blue.
Must be how Gruden is perceived outside of Tampa...I even saw an interview with a former Buccs player who openly admitted Gruden's departure might have been a year too late...

Not like he won't have a job next season...there are plenty of positions in the NFL and if he can keep from being bleeped long enough, he might even have a job in broadcasting *S*

I was definitely a little shocked when I heard about it. Especially how long they waited to do it. It seems like they knew they were going to do it so it makes me think they waited to keep his chances of finding another job lower.
