The good the bad and the ugly post game rant/vent week six

633 posts in this topic

After watching John on his presser this evening, I came away thinking he sounded very defensive and unrepentant about anything in the game that may have gone wrong. I think that is a wrong way to go about it. He defended the 4th and 1 call by citing another one we made. Not once did he mention how much our offense really stunk and how poor Flacco's decision making was with Wallace wide open and the terrible overthrow. If that catch was made, we win the game. How do we let a winning down when they were 4th and 1 to go for a TD? How? I don't like that we lost the last 3 games, but John didn't inspire confidence in the upcoming games either with his presser.

I love the Ravens. I have been a fan since their inception and have been through some challenging years with them including last year.

I have asked myself how is it that we keep losing, 3 weeks in a row now, when we have the right talent to go deep into the playoffs?

The phrases that come to mind are " we can't seem to close" and "we often play without a sense of urgency."

How many times in the last three weeks have we not completed third downs or gotten close to or actually in the red zone and not been able to close?

How many times, have we been within points of winning with little time on the clock and we look like a team thinking about dinner  after the game -- no sense of urgency. How much do you really want it?!

Flacco - do you really want another ring or are you content?

We need team player leaders in the mold of Ray Lewis. We are not losing for lack of taken but will.

Go Ravens!

I think that's a stretch to assume we'd win the game if he makes that catch, he could get tackled in bounds and then we lose, or likely he goes out at the 7 and we get 2 more tries. It was a miscommunication, I'm not so ready to put it on Flacco honestly.

And again I think people are going too far with criticizing Harbaugh for the 4th down decision, I didn't like the play call but even then 44 missed a block that could of sprung West, a better RB might turn that play into a TD.

1.) O-Line health will be the only thing to salvage this season, Getting 2/3 starters will help keep Flacco upright and give plays outside of check downs time to develop.

2.) We need Jimmy Smith on the field as without him, we are in big trouble against other team's #1 receivers. We also need an injection of speed on the back end as Webb, Davis, and Weddle just a tad bit, look slower than LBers.

3.) 4th and 1 is the right call, yes we needed points at the end again, but juice had a terrible attempt at a block and the plays were pretty darn bad. I easily would have tried at least one fake or at least tried one more attempt up the gut with an added lineman.

4.) Ozzie better get those frugal hands ready to spend some cash come off-season time, or try to trade for another pass rusher before the deadline because our rush is creating 0 pressure outside of suggs and Jernigan on occasion.

I'm sure Pees told Young and Weddle to get tangled...

Of course not but let me give you an analogy.

I am a Manager. I have schedule 1 that I use most of the time. (Pees' game plan for 90% of the game). We're crazy busy this weekend (end of half or game is on the line) and I move to schedule 2. It's a disaster. Now I can say the employees didn't do their job correctly (execute) and that would be a fact. I continually move to schedule 2 when we are busiest. (game is on the line) even though it fails 60% of the time. It is still a fact that the employees aren't doing their jobs correctly (executing) but that ultimately falls on me because I should be aware that schedule 2 fails more often than it is successful. That would make me a poor manager even if schedule 1 makes me look like a genius.

The thing is, Pees isn't using a schedule 1 or schedule 2. He's using the exact same game plan throughout the game.

It'd be one thing if play calls were failing, like he sent an overload blitz and AB got matched up in single coverage with no help against Young, but that's not what's happening.

This week you've got two players getting tangled. He's already playing with severe limitations due to no Mosley (Orr did have a hell of a game), no Doom, no Suggs, and no Jimmy, but now you have players just getting tangled. How can you really put that on Pees? Against the Raiders, you've got Wright essentially neglecting his duties in Cover 4 and biting when he shouldn't have. Can't really say much about the Redskins because STs are the main culprit in that game.

If Pees were running straight man across the board the entire game and consistently blitzing five to six and then went to a Cover 6 looks for the final drive only, you'd have a point, but that isn't what's happening.

Not sure how we can say that about Weddle. He may not be a young Weddle fast, but he's still fast.

Add in that he's been arguably the best defender for the Ravens this season and I'm not sure we can call him out at all.

I shudder to think of the secondary without him.

Seriously, please. No he isn't running straight man but he also isn't rushing 3 or 4 all game either. He mixes up his coverages throughout the game and even in zone the cushions are not as deep. Any opposing team knows they can drop back and take all the time they need to find someone open because Pees isn't going to call any sort of blitz at that point of the game.

Bottom line - he has zero creativity. He's more predictable than the hands on a clock. That doesn't mean everything he does is bad, in fact, he generally calls up decent game plans - he just throws them away when it matters most and relies on coverages we don't execute well and inserts cushions that make it too easy for teams to just march down into position.

Bend but don't break relies on not breaking and the stats show we break way more often than we bend with the game on the line.

I actually believe he is doing a better job this year being down on the field. Communication is better, whether that is solely Weddle or him being on the field, we dont' know for certain, and I think during the game necessary adjustments happen more often. I'm aware the offense isn't doing them any favors and the pass rush is weak, but seriously, we shouldn't have to hope every time the offense takes a late lead that the opponent scores quickly so the offense has another shot at the win because we KNOW the opponent is going to score.

I'll never understand why so many people point to coaches instead of the players that aren't executing.  That's not to say coaching is absolved of all blame (i.e. Trestman), but so many people forget that players have to make plays.  Any time a player doesn't make a play, the blame gets put on the coach for not putting someone in the correct position.  How about the fact that the player just didn't make a good play?  It's quite ridiculous, to be honest.  Sometimes it's justified, but more often than not, the issue is the player not doing his job, not the scheme or philosophy.

You know, despite a somewhat rough game yesterday, I still really like what Tavon Young is doing.  The growing pains are there, but the guy is a playmaker.  He's always around the ball and typically always tight on the hip in coverage.  He's feisty and I really like the competitive edge from him so far.  Despite him giving up a couple of TDs (one was the long Beckham where him and Weddle collided), I still think he's doing well.

That diving INT was great and his return wasn't bad either

People are calling the late flacco throw to Wallace an overthrow? Are we forgetting that Wallace came to a dead stop as flacco was releasing and flacco led him to the end zone?

It was clearly a miscommunication of sorts, and I can't really place blame on either side.  Wallace was hanging around by the sidelines and was looking for the back shoulder throw to get out of bounds quickly.  Good move and probably the route that was called.  Flacco, on the other hand, noticed that the Giants were playing an extremely soft defense and thought that he could actually go for it all on that play, but Wallace stuck to the play.  I can't really place fault on either.  Wallace was playing smart, but Flacco was also playing smart by seeing the opportunity.  It wasn't a straight overthrow though like many are making it out to be.

An obvious case of a Miami/Minnesota hangover. He doesnt realize joe is always going for the throat in that situation because he's played with conservative noodle arm dink and dunkers for years now.

I watched this game TWICE!!!  The offensive line is just that...OFFENSIVE!!! I would think it would be easier to run block than pass pro.  They can't even get that right!!  TOO MANY PENALTIES...16 FALSE STARTS THIS YEAR ALREADY!!!  Zuttah is truly a non factor, he winds up in Joe's lap more than his kids!!!! The Jets have a stout front four.  All I can say is "Run, Joe, Run!!!"

Seeing how Joe played that game, I'm going to assume Joe's at fault for that one.  He was missing guys even when he had time to throw.  It looked like a bad over throw.

It's one thing to be a fan and I applaud your enthusiasm but it's another thing entirely too put hype out there for a team that is simply awful. Some of the so-called fans on this site would be better served by standing up and saying I've had enough of this mediocre football in Baltimore. We should be saying what happened to " playing like a Raven". We should be saying " this is looking more and more like the Brian Billick era after he won the SB".  All great movements have started from a single thought and a single step. If we yell loud enough they will have to do something. Get Har-Ball out of Baltimore and lets get Kyle Shanahan or Josh McDaniels while we can.

Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it !

I have a question.

Do you have the All-22 to go back and check on the coverages or are you recording games to see what coverages are being used? Are you charting the number of rushers being used and comparing it against opponents?

I will give 100% of credit on communication to Weddle. I will give credit to Pees on in game adjustments, which aren't plentiful because it's hard to make wholesale changes on the fly in a game.

However, if I go back and watch Beckham's last touchdown, I bet that it was man based on the route Tavon took. And it wasn't 8 yards off, either, so there's a change.

But in any case, the depths of the drops for zones don't change tremendously. I think you're just seeing what you want to.

Our problem on defense isn't a lack of communication or the coverage. Its playmakers. We just don't have them. Did you see the Honey Badger jump a route last night and make an interception. Our drafting has been woeful at best, dating back to before the SB in 2012.

Get real man, weren't you the one that said we were going to lose by over 20? We were literally one 4th down away from victory with pretty much our entire team injured. Its so obvious your not a real fan of this team I don't know why I keep feeding you.

This is almost the exact same thing you posted last year. In fact, everything you post sounds  pretty much like the same thing over and over again. Anyone who doesn't agree with you or posts something negative about the team is either a troll or simply just not a Ravens fan.

If walking around with blinders on repeating the same old blather about injuries and whatever other excuse you keep pulling out of your pocket year after year defines being a Ravens fan in your eyes then perhaps you need glasses. Often times a person is significant in their own eyes but certainly others do not see the same thing as you. I am thankful for that. You refuse to see the writing on the wall and instead attach your reality to the clouds in the sky.

How is that workin for you last couple years?

Comes true? I've never proclaimed like yourself I can predict anything outside of the fun "predict our record"  which I stated between 7-9 to 9-7,  seems like the former.  And I hate to tell you this,  if you are a ravens fan as you say you are,  we are on the same team,  some people forget that.  I'm happy with our hc, your not..Cool, but Im not going to try to make others think what I do,  that's why we each have our own opinions.  I'm fine with everyone having a different opinion,  that's why we kill time here.  just don't get but hurt when some people aren't yelling at the picket line with you to fire a coach with one losing season and a SB.  When did I say I didn't want truth? But this I enjoy.

I don't know if you noticed but Joe Flacco looked like he just wanted to go get a bite and watch tv or something on the last drive of the Giants game. He had guys wide open and made some of the worst throws I've ever seen by an NFL qb. The roughing penalty just gave him the opportunity to look even worse. Wallace would have stole the show if Flacco had been trying to win the game instead of thinking about chicken wings.

I do get a little frustrated when our corners seem to never even attempt to jump a route.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2670354-nfl1000-seattles-legion-of-boom-still-great-but-with-one-obvious-flaw

This is an excellent article on how the top ranked Seattle defense for four years running struggled tremendously against the Atlanta Falcons. Despite having an extremely simple defense (like really, high school level thinking), the Seattle Seahawks had miscommunications and breakdowns that led to three touchdowns that may otherwise not happen.

This is a perfect example of players not executing; not the coach.

Also, Pees blitzed on about 30% of the passing snaps. Got pressure on about 30% of those blitzes. When not blitzing, he pressured at about a 35% rate. Just putting things into perspective.
