[News] Eisenberg: Maybe Marty Mornhinweg Will Stop Revolving Door At Ravens Offensive Coordinator

48 posts in this topic

I live in the Philly area sports talk radio is laughing, snickering that we now have Marty as OC. Can't wait for MM to do a great job. Really can't wait when the Eagles visit Baltimore in December. And yes, will be wearing my Ravens TWO TIME SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS jacket.

Hopefully Marty doesn't have any asperations to be a head coach with all the other stuff they have to do besides actually coaching.

i sure hope marty is the long term answer. someone harbs should keep an eye out for is mike mccoy from the chargers. if he gets the boot than maybe hire him as a consultant for the rest of the season and give him the oc job after the season but i am rooting for marty to be the answer. good luck!!

Need a OC that has been a head coach already! Cannot blame someone for trying to fulfill a dream! NFL aka Not For Long and that applies to players and coaches! It's what you do when you have them and that's all you can do! If it doesn't work with Marty the Ravens really need to look at the QB position because the Ravens beat the hottest team in football with "BACKUPS"! And whom was the OC?!

For me, it is difficult to get excited about Mornhinweg, I do not see a great deal of Leadership presence in the guy AND, in my mind this is critical, wasn't he a part of Trestman's team? Did he not have the opportunity to contribute his two cents into game plans and general offensive direction, did he do so?

I for one also see two common treads with the offensive struggles over the years, one John Harbaugh does not escape responsibility in my mind, he is the Head Coach and as such should be participating in the development of each game plan and the overall offensive strategy and if the direction is not going well, he should work with the coordinator to get it right participating at whatever ever level is needed to insure the success of the unit. That to me is good LEADERSHIP. Yes at some point in time the OC has to maintain that direction which is responsible for success BUT we never got there with Trestman so in my mind Harbaugh is just as much responsible as Trestman and he threw Trestman under the bus!

The second common thread, and I love the guy, is Joe. It is Joe after all who is checking down as most plays have various options including, long, middle and short routes. IMO Joe has a tendency to just want to go long which is hit or miss and we lack long sustainable drives to help keep the D off the field and rested.

Joe has never been strong in running progressions and Kubes was trying to work with him on reading during his drop back.

Joe also has the ability to audible out of a pass play at any time and go to the run if that is what is needed BUT he too has not done that. He want's a chunk offense and running does not fit that bill so, regardless of the coordinator, Joe has to improve in his on field management and we need an offensive coordinator who has some leadership skills along with current day x and o capabilities.

Offensive line is also scary the way they are currently playing and I am surprised at the amount of reported injuries which can also be an indication of a lack of leadership and desire to go play the game at a high level...

To me, the biggest reason we've lacked long, sustainable drives is the fact that we seem to always shoot ourselves in the foot with penalties. And the scary offensive line play is the reason ... it is along the line where these drive-killing penalties occur. They generally don't appear to be of the bone-head variety (false start or hands to the face) ... they normally seem to be the "I can't cleanly block my opponent so I guess I better grab him" kind of penalties.

Agreed .... It's another disturbing issue and another x Phili coach with the o line....

Right on the money!!! Penalties are killing us this year, and I've seen WAY to many of the type you describe, although I guess they're better than letting Flacco get clobbered out there...

wasn't he a part of Trestman's team? Did he not have the opportunity to contribute his two cents into game plans and general offensive direction, did he do so?

Mornhinweg came over from the Jets, and Trestman from the Bears and they never worked together. Mornhinweg and Harbaugh coached together while on the Eagles staff. In the end the game plan and offensive direction was directed by Trestman. Remember, the OC is the second level of the coaching staff, and a QB coach falls below the OC. The one person who should be held accountable for the OC is Harbaugh adding his two cents into game plans and adding input in the general offensive direction of his team.

Well, I've wondered how much of Trestman being hired was front office more than Harbs...maybe why they seemed like they wern't on the same page sometimes...Harbs and Mornhinweg were both coaches under Andy Reid (and likewise from the Holmgren mold), so maybe they will have a better understanding? Whatever the case, I'm personally glad to see Trestman out the door and hope that we see something different than what he brought to the table, which wasn't much...

I don't mind Joe favoring deep passes if they learn to connect more often than they have been. Still, I'd like to see them balance their plays and make the most out of all types. I get the sense Flacco prefers the deep passes. Those are great plays but riskier too. There is one advantage tho and that's getting the pass interference called on those. The major disadvantage is interceptions. Another disadvantage is lesser odds of completion in a deep pass results in too many wasted downs going deep. But...if Ravens receivers get really good at the deep pass receptions...yeah we'll start notching up wins with more scoring in end zone. If...if.

The bolded statement is incorrect. Mornhinweg and Trestman were together in San Fran.

Mornhinweg followed Trestman as OC in SF.

I want to see an offensive identity. Plays design to get the best out of what they have. If Perriman struggles catching, give him short screen passes and let him get yac. If Wallace struggles with separation, setup crossing routes and picks. If the line struggles with protection, roll Joe out of the pocket. Rediscover Aiken please. He carried the passing game last season and now is rarely targeted. I think some guys need to get in a flow.Feed West and Dixon the ball.

I was under the impression Marty was promoted to OC when Trestman was fired but apparently that is incorrect.

We are getting penalties but Flacco is still getting clobbered. Hopefully we can come up with the right solution soon. Don't know how much Joe can take.

if the RAVENS were smart they'd hire only a young bright guy and say if you take this job its a 5 year contract,if he doesn't work out, fire him and bring in another, but make sure whomever takes the job,it's a 5 year deal.

it was smart that HARBAUGH brought MARTY in last year,he was giving trestman a short lease and MARTY was there as back up,if you think about it,HARBAUGH brought everything with him from PHILLY,but ANDY REIDS offense, now he has it.

I certainly hope I'm wrong but this looks like one more short term band aid.

I agree, I feel like he may be similar to cam. We need a creative offense to mask our lack of playmakers at skill positions. But that's hard with the offensive line he has right now. Time will tell.

finally an OC that understands how to attack a weak point of a defense, which most do have some weakness or a weak personel or injury, whatever and continue to attack it until they can stop it,if they do,it opens another weak point and he will make the change, unlike TRESTMANN and attack it.the thing I want to see is HARBAUGH more involved,if he sees somethings not right, like stop running when were clearly able to run and say NO,were gonna keep running the ball till they stop it and i want to see ajustments made during the game, with trestman it was this is the plan,if it don't work we'll make it work, not good at ajusting.

Taking more deep shots does not mean every play, just more sprinkled into the play calling in general. Really the intermediate routes are the ones they need to start connecting on more. Throwing short of the yard sticks is just demoralizing when you make the catch and not the first down. Might as well just run the ball at that point. The odd screen pass or what ever is fine but before It was several plays of short passes shy of a first down. How does that help get anyone excited on offense or put up points.

No he won't. He likes to pass just as much as Trestman if not more. That may be why he did not fit in NY. He may give offense a spark temporarily but in the long term, I don't think he fits a run first attack which is what work in Baltimore

If that is what you think good leadership is, you're wrong. You are talking about micro-managing and that never works.

A true leader lays the groundwork, sets expectation levels and follows through with, in this case, weekly evaluations of coaches performances. From there, Harbs then determines where the weaknesses are and makes recommendations on how to correct them.

Basically, he gives them the keys to drive the car, knowing all too well that 2 people can't drive the same car at the same time.

When it comes to the point that the subordinate continues to disregard or not meet the groundwork and expectations, you move on. Which is exactly what happened in this case. Harbs did not throw Trestman under the bus. The man dug his own grave.

Man, they already do that. Every coach has a short term, 1,2,3 or 5 year contract. While under this contract, no coach can make a lateral move. If someone contacts you, requesting to speak to a coach being considered for promotion, you have to agree to allow it. If not you end up with a disgruntled employee for holding them back which is never smart.

Everyone keeps calling this group "lacking playmakers"

its really getting to me.... We don't lack playmakers! We fail to get them the ball when theyr hot "good matchup" at the right place or time

1- SSS is on pace for his 3rd 1000 yard season. Now everyone is gonna get on me for saying that knowing that he was on pace for 1400 last season till he got hurt.

2- M.Wallace is arguably the best #2 receiver in the NFL today.

3- pitta is a top 5 TE

4- tell me one team that has a better #3 and #4 WR. Il wait.....

5- buck Allen, Dixon, and West are 3rd and 4th round talents. If you can't get 120 yards from scrimmage out of any of them then it's on you Mr coordinator.

6- Yanda and Stanley would start on 31 other NFL teams. If you can't build a respectable line around them then it's on you mr coordinator.

This team is loaded with game changers! Trestman regularly drew up plays that exposed our weakness and handcuffed our strength.

How many times was pitta lined up outside the numbers? How many times did perriman run in routes and attempted to catch it between 2 guys? How many times did we see the good old I-Formation? How many times did we see K.Mack rushing 1vs1 against a struggling LT? It's all upto the coordinator to get the most out of his players. In trestmans case it was like "let's see how good you can adjust to my style"
