[News] Jerry Rosburg: We Need To Fix Special Teams Miscues

25 posts in this topic

The offense and special teams have been bitter disappointments thus far this year. Unless they both improve quickly our play-off hopes will be dashed again. There is still time to right the ship but we are approaching the end of the "easy" part of our schedule. We can only hope at this point.

Players are getting out of position and not holding the line! Gotta get that SWARM back! Our boys are stumbling out the gate on Offense and now Special Teams but I really feel they will rebound and produce big time! My confidence level is still through the ROOF! I'm a Raven "The Good The Bad and The Ugly"! I Ride REGARDLESS! WE THE BEST!

Thats why I'm glad our schedule was set up that way. Esp with the bye right before the steelers. I expected a bit of rust with new pieces and a lot of guys coming back, and our schedule couldn't have catered to that any better than it does. I'm glad we made the OC change. I expect the st play to return to the top 5 like we're used to. Then if the D stays in the top 5, we only need the O to play middle of the pack Offense for us to be a dangerous dangerous team. Especially come play off time. I have all the confidence in the world we'll make the playoffs. Just really hope Wright is done playing. They made the moves on Forseet and Trestman. Time to get things done and not worry about feelings or indirectly admitting a mistake about a recent contract.

Special Teams players are trying so hard to shine that they seem to be forgetting to think before getting to aggressive trying to make the big play. They will return to form this weekend though you can count on that. Fundamentals seem to be the first thing that goes when it goes downhill.

In addition to the problems in coverage, return man Devin Hester has also had some issues. He muffed a punt against Jacksonville and then fumbled against Oakland, and he seemed tentative at times to run under punts against Washington.

NOT at all what I expected from Hester; he either needs to return (pun intended) to form or let another guy have a shot. His punt fielding against Washington was horrible - 2 he should have fair caught he didn't and let them bounce 10 yards further down field.

“I don’t see a slump. I don’t see any confidence lacking,” Rosburg said. “He’s a great returner and he’s going to go.”
I guess this is code for "Devin is not performing and needs to step up if he wants to remain a Raven".

One of our biggest punt coverage concerns is Aiken. The guy just continues to make mistakes as the gunner.

Against OAK, he made a stupid play running into the returner. Then, he was the one that totally whiffed on the tackle that sprang the return to the 6 yard line.

With WAS, he totally blew his lane assignment. gunning from the left all of the way out to the right hash marks and then back out again. A lot of wasted running making him arrive late and not be involved in the return for the touchdown.

If the ball doesn't hit Hester in the face he either watches it sail over his head or waves for a fair catch.

Whiff

I've thought our kick coverage has been over-rated for a while now. Our return game is, and has been poor as well. Our place kicker is Awesome and our punter is good (very small # of muffs), but coverages and returns, NAH!

Agree 100%. I think his success as a WR last year has made him complacent on special teams. With the dropped pass (that hit him in the numbers) in that Oak game & his special teams miscues, he was a big reason why we didn't win.

Hester isn't worth $4 million with or without incentives.

Nope, and it looks like his spare butt will be out this week

Next time you watch the Ravens receiving a punt or kick off notice how quickly the other team sets up in front of the Ravens receiver. It's bull how great this special team is. Ravens returners never have a chance. According to this for this year Ryan Jensen is number one for Ravens.

Jamine Lewis was the best the Jacoby Jones for the Ravens

Still 3 and 2 - possible but not playing like this

It's also possible the Browns will go on a winning streak

Cut Devin Hester - sign DeAndre Carter. Have Carter & Chris Moore return kicks.

I wish it was that simple. Hester is still the best returner on this squad and it's not even close.

Aiken on the other hand should not be on the ST squad. He's not that guy and never will be the guy who shoves people out of the way and make every tackle when he has the chance. He's a possession receiver with great hands and runs crisp routes. I have no idea why he's even on the ST squad. Trade him if your not gonna use him right.

Just how do you "fix" soimething like this in a week or two? I guess there's just no magical quick fix...

When you punt the ball 8 freakin times in one game and almost always kick it in bounds, it's bound to happen.

Lets play it safe until we have to take risks. Koch has a leg for real! But often times the kick is so good that no one is even close to cover it. We can sacrifice 5-10 yards for more hang time and kick towards the sidelines when our defense is dominating.

it won't fix it but it'll hold the fort until our bye week ;)
