Merged: Marty Mornhinweg and the New Offense

340 posts in this topic

I think Morninwheg is the perfect guy for us right now. West coast scheme with a balanced philosophy.

He's highly qualified, too. Apparently, through his career, he has coached every offensive position. He was the youngest OC in the league when he first had that gig.

Morninwheg also comes from the Andy Reid coaching tree, which I like. Overall, Reid is one of the best offensive minds in the game, behind only Kyle Shanahan, Josh McDaniels/Bill Belichick, Gary Kubiak, and Mike McCarthy, if you ask me. Having a guy that's worked under Reid could work well for us.

Also of note: Juan Castillo was the Eagles OL coach at the same time Morninwheg was OC. I like that. There's chemistry there, and they'll be on the same page, system wise. I feel like Trestman was never on the same page with anyone else.

This guy really is the perfect fit for us right now.

This. I don't care if our receivers drop the ball or Joe misses his target.

I wonder when did they start talking with Marty. Obviously, they were prepared for this scenario.

He was already the QB coach

I honestly don't know too much about him. He was the later McNabb/Westbrook era right?

idk. Not too sure if he's the long term guy

I'm guessing, yeah. Morninwheg was OC from 06-12.

He had the latter part of Brian Westbrook's career (06-09) and the beginning of Lesean McCoy's career (09-2013). Those run games were explosive.

It was the tail end of McNabb's career with Philly (06-09), but McNabb put up some respectable seasons.

Not yet sold on him as a long term guy but I think he'll do well for us this season.

Send em 12+

Teams sit on our first down marker knowing were throwing short of it. What made Joe an awesome qb through the cam years was basically telling the defense "you have a lot more to worry about than stopping the first down..." and actually doing it on the field. Why we got away from it is beyond me. But teams HAVE to sit on first down markers to stop the easy conversion, they have next to no choice, that is when things open up downfield, the more decisively we strike downfield the better the results. We are just a scared offense and play so timid.

Now we just need Steve Smith to step up to the podium and say
"Today I told my teammates... that this would be my last ride. "

More player comparisons...

Upstart DT to potentially leave via free agency: Art Jones - Brandon Williams

Pass rusher coming out of nowhere: Paul Kruger - Zadarius/Judon

Impact DB stepping up during the year: Corey Graham - Tavon Young

"Other CB" just doing enough to hold his own: Chykie Brown - Shareece Wright

Old but steady safety to keep the secondary together: Ed Reed - Eric Weddle

Undrafted ILB with a solid year: Dannell Ellerbe - Zach Orr

Rookie converted tackle playing guard: Kelechi Osemele - Alex Lewis

White tight end: Dennis Pitta - Dennis Pitta

This means nothing obviously but whatever. We also played the Giants right afterwards.

That might be true, but I can't bear to bring up the dreaded trio of Jacoby, McKinney and Torrey. As long as you don't compare Jernigan to Terrance Cody!

Its kinda creepy. A death within the organization just like 2012. We lose to the skins just like 2012. We fire our OC the day after just like 2012. We know we have talent and potential just like 2012. So now let's get hot bust our playbook wide open and win a Superbowl

We also promoted the QB coach to replace said fired OC.

*cue Twilight Zone music*

From what I been reading about Marty Mornhinweg his offense seems more similar to Gary Kubiaks. Makes me wonder why  wasn't he made the offensive coordinator instead of Marc Trestman unless Harbaugh feared he may  have a  better chance of leaving the team due to a head coaching job since he is younger than Trestman.

2012, 2016. They both have 20 in them!

I'm confident Marty will bring some unpredictability back to the offense. I really like that he and Joe have been working together for some time so it's not like starting from scratch.

Haven't found anything yet but I was digging to find any comments about the flacco Marty connection (if they got along well).

Agree with another member that mentioned how kubiak would be talking with flacco on the sidelines but never seen that with trestman

Not who I would choose, ideally. But he can't possibly be worse than Trestman. After what he did yesterday, I'd take Caldwell over him.

I wouldn't say he's too similar to Kubiak tbh, aside from using WCO principles in the passing game. With Kubiak everything starts up front with his stretch zone, where moving the chains relies on using his backs to make the right reads, and once the run game gets going the QB has a bit more space to throw higher-percentage passes. Where Mornhinweg uses short timing-based passes to get his QB into a rhythm to get things started, at which point he opens up the playbook and starts throwing deeper and then pounding the run game to ice the game when the offence is already rolling. Kubiak essentially runs to set up the pass and isn't as creative or explosive, while Mornhinweg passes to set up the run and attacks all three levels a lot more, but is more prone to stalling.

There are a couple of decent articles about him. Here's one by an Eagles fan about what his hiring meant for the Jets a few years ago:
http://turnonthejets.com/2013/01/new-york-jets-marty-mornhinwegs-offense-101-an-in-depth-look/

And here's one that's a bit more general and more about his behind the scenes stuff:
http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2013/01/the_marty_mornhinweg_system_ho.html

I have to say I'm more excited about our offence under Mornhinweg than I was when Trestman first got hired. We'll see how he goes this season and in future, but he looks like the balanced play caller we've been wanting ever since Cam's playbook started getting old. And as others have said he's our best offensive mind since Kubiak.

I know that's a tough concept to grasp isn't it

Its all about the route tree, NE lives on that crossing route to <insert shifty little guy> for first downs

I hadn't thought of that, that's an excellent point. Thankfully the transition should be smoother than usual, and in a way the bye week comes at a really nice time. Two weeks of seeing what we've got, a week off to really iron out anything that needs to get addressed and then it's onto the Steelers and Browns.

Hmmm interesting stuff to read on and I'm starting to get excited as well for Mornhinweg.

Great reads inqui, thanks for posting

Short horizontal timing passes that set up the run and deep ball.

Hoping he can Keep defenses guessing/honest and be able to make game time adjustments (when needed)
