I have mixed emotions on this move:

First: I am happy that we made the move bc we may now be able to take the handcuffs off of the offense and really start to utilize the weapons and potential that we have.

Second: I like Morninweg's pedigree... plus he has the Andy Reid / Harbaugh connection

Third: I love that fact that he is a QB coach and has produced 5 pro bowl QBs- I think Marty will be good for Joe

Those are the positives:
Here are the negatives.

First: It is another new coordinator and another new system. I do think that the introduction of 5 new OC over the past 9 years limits what this offense can be. While I believe that it will be an upgrade... I hope that the learning curve isn't to steep and takes 8 weeks to start clicking

Second: We have drafted personal to fit into our current system... wonder how the transition will be for some players. (I get it sometimes you need to prune a tree for it to grow) But I wonder what that looks like in real life

Third: With offensive success being so hard to find through 5 different OC in the Harbaugh era (Kubiack really being the only one to have much sustained success) I am beginning to wonder if the problem is not systematic and bigger then an OC... I guess time will tell on this one.

Finally.... I am excited about the opportunity to grown and move forward. I am excited to finally take the handcuffs off of this offense and while I never thought Dean Pees would outlast Trestman... I am looking forward to what this brings.... last time we fired an OC in the middle of the season... we won the Super Bowl. Hope that history repeats itself!

1- I feel ya on this one. I just look at it in a different perspective. Had we won all 5 of our previous games then Trestman would have kept his job regardless if we lose the next 5 on a row. Now we at least have a chance come playoffs coz Trestman was never gonna win us 3 playoff games in a row no matter what. So it's gonna hurt but I think it's growing pain. Don't take too many risks on O and let the D carry this team.

2- I don't think we've been drafting system as much as wev been taking best available. We have 4 versatile TEs and each is unique in his way. We also have a combination of possession WRs and burners. A down hill RB and a pass catching back. This next coordinator may favor some players over others but the talent is there.

3- I also fear the same. Flacco is no Rodgers. No shame in that. Just stop using him like he is. He's probably the best game managing QB out there so let him be the best and let the Ws speak. Sometimes I feel like our FO are trying too hard to make Flacco into a 5k yard passer and that's just not his game. I'm more than satisfied with 3500 yards 25 TDs and 12 INTs. Then show up in the playoffs "with efficiency" like always.

Yes, Harbs finally did something right. Don't know if it was his call or it was Ozzie/Bischotti who said pull the plug on Testman. The playbook will be the same, but the game plan should drastically change and we can see the offense flourish. The next thing Harbaugh has to do is to put points on the board when there is the opportunity. Tucker is one of the top 3 kickers in the league. We took away his foot against Oakland and did the same yesterday. We kick the FG instead of the lame fake field goal play and then we kick a FG at the end of the game it's on to OT. Yes we want to score TD's instead of FGs for the most part, but the non-kicks have put us in all or nothing situations these last two games and we lost both!.

But then again if we win maybe Trestman stays on, so we take a loss to the Skins (which hurts) but make a big gain in getting an OC who has plenty of experience and hopefully gets the offense to produce. The talent is there let's use it. To Marty M please make it a point to have a balanced attack, a few surprises and the ability to adjust throughout the game. Your predecessor lacked these qualities, BIG TIME!! .

Doers anyone know SSS and Mosely's injury status.

" Game Plans " ... At the end of the day it is pitch and catch. Throwing to the open person regardless of what you wanted to do based on watching film, which everyone watches and everyone changes for their opponent to some degree. When a play breaks down, you have to get open. People aren't getting open, the ball isn't where it needs to be. Let Joe call based on what he sees, if he can't do that. We got the wrong quarterback. Comes down to the players, not the coaches. Coaches are there as their bosses, not their parents or to drastically alter their football iq. Things are as complicated as you allow them to be... The same way they are as simple as you allow them to be...

Gotta disagree. Peyton Manning before his decline is about the caliber QB you need for that.

Offensive coordinators serve a purpose, we just had the wrong one

For those worried about new offense implementation now, I would say that shouldn't be the case. You don't, and really can't, change such a thing mid-season. Little changes here and there are fine but you can't step in and tell the team to forget everything you knew before. It is more the week preparation and game time changes.

And I think they really wanted to keep a Trestman, if only for continuity (2 years OC) but finally decided to make a major change after yesterday. Changing OC is no easy task. It worked well in 2012, but in 2012 we had so many veteran players and some good 2nd, 3rd year players...that they could read out plays and make big moves naturally on the field with less coaching help. This is a rebuilding year and not quite the same so it's not something to compare exactly because they need to get better overall at this point whereas in 2012 they just needed to be changing up play calls to give the experience and talent that year a chance to break out.

Not saying there not talent THIS year, as indeed there is...just we don't have the veteran league we had in 2012. We have some good veterans tho, but it's more a mix of levels and experience this year.

If anyone is questioning the long overdue decision to fire Marc Trestman then they're simply not watching the games or paying attention to football in general. He was given way more chances than he deserved...his cerebral versus "lets use what's working" approach has Cost the Ravens countless close-call victories over the past 2 seasons as it Cost the Bears previously. He might have been lucky in the CFL but he doesn't belong in the NFL...not to worry though, he will do great as a Hallmark greeting card author.  Good riddance!  Still baffled at how he ever got recommended for the job in the first place...Come on Ozzie, Come on John...learning has Got to occur quicker than this next time.

Knowing our "best available" draft philosophy, sounds like we need a coach that adapts to what we have versus running "their system"

I have my eye on you Mourningweig.
Bring Normalcy back to the offense.
What does that mean? 25-30 runs to 35 passes A game, Balance.
More Deep Shots, PlayAction,
No more 50 passes to 18 runs..
Otherwise the entire Coaching staff gets the boot next

For all the Trestman supporters, an interesting fact. In the games that Trestman has been OC the Ravens have scored less than 18 points in over 65% of the games. 18 points in the NFL isn't going to win you games, which is why we were 5-11 last year and headed in that direction quick this year. Trestman's record as an OC at other places doesn't mean diddly squat. Trestmans problem from day one is my way or the highway. In other words, this is my system, you are going to run it, even if the QB isn't a dink and dunk qb and although we don't have quick twitch receivers (other than SSS who did well) he still tried to hit the receivers under 10 yards when they can't get open in that area. On third downs, Trestman has called for passes that were thrown short of the sticks 90% of the time. Our offense isn't great, but our talented players are not having their strengths utilized, its almost as if he thought robots were out there and everyone did the same things at the same proficiency. He was a genius who knew he knew everything and he wasn't open to doing things differently. We have all heard Flacco and Harbaugh the last three weeks about running the ball and throwing for chunk yards, yet Trestman does whatever he feels like. I said last week, does Trestman think he is long for this job when he totally disregards the HC. This is overdue from last year, we should have never put up with it through 5 weeks of this year. Kudos to John and Ozzie.

Its not like Marty Mornhinweg hasn't been around, this is his chance to have a shot at being a solid OC, and i think he has the luxury to see what not to do, and that is alienate your QB....you have to be on the same page, and communicate during the game, for in game adjustments, not half time adjustments....

I wasn't a Trestman supporter, I just wanted continuity. I was a Kubiak supporter actually and was mad at him for abandoning us after he said he would not take head coaching job, that his heart was here with us to help make us the best we could be. Then next week he's off to Denver I felt betrayed. Then, afterwards I realized...yeah it's his dream job in Denver, I can't blame him. But...I was happy with Kubiak here.

Still I wasn't against Trestman. But since I wasn't really for him either, not like Kubiak, I can adjust easily to the change. Sad to see him go...but here's an interesting stat on our new OC Mornhinweg:

"During his career as an Offensive Coordinator, Mornhinweg's offenses have finished 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th, and 12th in total offense, and regularly highly ranked in big plays." Wiki

Good news, so he didn't have a good head coaching record in his brief time with Lions but pretty decent OC record. More than decent actually...never fell below 12th place total offense.

It is not so much about the exact number of run vs pass plays but the %'s need to be more even keel. At the least 60% pass and 40% run or 60% and 40% pass. That is the range to stick within. Even more important however is masking the play calls so defenses cannot simply read the play before it happens. Call it the poker face aspect of being an OC. Lastly, when something is working well, keep it up and do not stop until opponents show they can stop it outright.

Having has the chance to get to know Joe and this thoughts on offensive game planning should be nothing but a blessing for Morningweg as he sinks his teeth into the duties of OC.

Trestman really did not make the transition from the CFL. In CFL you can pass and run at those rates because you only get 3 downs vs 4 downs. It pretty much forces you to throw along those lines or average at least 5 yards a carry to keep your offense on the (bigger) field. NFL with a smaller field just has less room to run his routes with means the run game is more highly valued. Either way, he has been in the NFL long enough to have been able to pick up on this, whether coaches telling him of judging the results from game film. I was in favor of firing Trestman, mostly for the complete lack of putting up points. This was the single biggest issue for concern.

well,we all wanted it,but seems like his replacement isn't all that well known for lighting up the league either, hope we turn out like BUFFALO,lets cross our fingers he can get guys open,i'd really like to see him bring more focus,a killer intinct and have HARBAUGH and FLACCO be more hands on.i'd also like to see FLACCO in the shotgun at all times and the TIGHTENDS,2 of them involved in the game plan.iv'e said from the beggining PERRIMAN rarely gets seperation unless he's in a straight line, just have him run as fast as he can downfield every play to open up other guys.I really hope MORNINGWIG doesn't change everything, just focus on getting guys open.the SKINS were on their 2nd and 3rd string in many key areas so yeah, this is really an embarracing loss and yeah,i guess they are are rival,i hope we don't move on from this and keep this bad taste in our mouths so we don't lose focus.

The best run systems are the ones that encompass all the strengths of a team and mask their weaknesses. It's called synergy. All the parts need to be on the same page (in sync), clearly understand what is expected of them (communication) and held accountable for better or for worse to reinforce the system and buy in. Lastly the system needs to be realistic in what they ask their players to execute. What ever the task is must be reasonable to expect their can successfully execute it 90% + of the time, if not automatic.

First of all I want to thank you Mr. Bisciotti for firing Marc Trestman. Secondly I applaud your choice in selecting Marty Mornhinweg who certainly steps into his new role with an impressive resume. Now, please remind Mr. Pees of your love for a strong pass rush which has been lacking due to some questionable play calling on the defensive side of the ball. I'm sure you love watching your defensive players blitzing the QB and forcing turn overs instead of sitting back and allowing our secondary to get beaten regularly.

cam cameron is god compared to this guy.

Cam Cameron was too vanilla overall. Just not much imagination to force defense to hesitate.

Mark Trestman was too fancy overall. Trying to make these fancy type plays ever play or settle for the fire escape dump off passes.

Morningweg just needs to stay within those two boundaries and he will do fine.

If you really think not getting pressure on the QB is good enough, then good for you......But i'm not good with it at all...His pevent defense cost us last week, his lack of pressure in a lot of situations on Cousins was a joke, mean while, other defenses are dialing it up, and getting Joe killed....Film doesn't lie....

Didn't we abandon the prevent defense last week on the last drive or something?

Anyway, good riddance. I tried to like trestman, I really did. He just never knew how to play ravens football.

Pees you're on notice, your weak sauce blitzes don't work.....

What are you talking about? Pees on notice. If it was not for his defense playing very well, the Ravens would easily be 0-5 with no sign of slowing the suffering down. Maybe his pass rush is not among the best in the league, but the best pass rushes have more to do with exceptional players making unbelievable plays over just a DC making a good play call.

I will also very clearly point out that had the offense been able to stay on the field and produce even the NFL average points per game, this defense would be much better simply from not being gassed as the game goes into the fourth quarter. Cannot drop the entire load on the defense like that and expect miracles to happen when the offense decides to disappear for 3 quarters plus.

Pees is on notice? More like Harbaugh is on notice. Defense is playing pretty decent for what we have to work with. Again, we don't have good enough corners to play press coverage and blitz all the time......Sorry but it is true. Ill keep saying this over and over. The problem with the Ravens is we really don't have any playmakers anymore. That's the sad harsh reality.

Halsheyeji.... I am with you on point # 3. I think we are the only ones who take the "Is Flacco Elite" seriously. Everyone says that winning super bowls is what makes you elite. If Joe retires with 2 or 3 rings... I don't care if he is mediocre everywhere else... he will be considered elite.

2. The OL were the system players I was speaking off. We do go with best available player but I feel like we may veer from the course a little on the OL?

3. I love the perspective on #1. I agree that if Tresman was our OC in the play offs.. we would have surely staled at some point .... different way of looking at it but I think you are right on with that one!

More heads should roll. But I doubt it will happen. We have to improve in a lot of areas to get better. I hope things take off for us again, because the last two weeks have been especially frustrating lossing very winnable games. Scratch that....games that we SHOULD have won.

Honestly other than Torrey, we haven't really had a dynamic playmaker in years. Ray Rice maybe when he was dual threat? I don't know, but we haven't scared defenses in a long, long time.

Agreed.... if we don't think coaches make a difference... answer why Billicheck went 3-1 without a QB or why Andy Ried turned the Chiefs around so fast... or why the other Harb changed the culture so quickly and dramatically in SF and then when he left... it went back that quickly. Or why Mike Zimmer is having so much success in Minnesota (without Bridgewater or Adrian Peterson). Or how Bruce Arians turned the Cardinals around. Coaches make a big difference and probably equally as big or bigger then the players.

Its not just pitch and catch it is execution and precision in the execution. Anyone who makes it to the NFL is in the top 2 % of anyone who plays the game. TOp 2 %... they can all pitch and catch.. but the Browns remain the browns bc of poor execution... the top teams remain on top because of preparation and attention to details. The coaches jobs are to ensure that this happens consistently and clearly some do it better then others.

Offense needed a change, and the O Line needs to do a better job for Flacco, so he can have time to throw the deep passes. Hopefully, Mornhigweg can get the offense clicking
