Is Harbaugh on the Hot Seat Yet

People on this board watch the Ravens much more than posters on NE backup forum, profootballtalk.com. For some of us missing playoffs is a failure and we failed 3 out of 4 times since SB win. Some of you may be content with not losing and consider only the absolute bottom such as the state of 49ers, Rams or Browns a failure. Accepting mediocrity is your choice, there's nothing dumber than that.

Don't disagree with that notion, BUT, the key problem with that logic is that it sort of implies that a coaching change will change that string of mediocrity. If there's one thing we know for sure, its that concept is FAR from a guarantee in this league.

I think far too many franchises change coaches far too quickly, and often do so with very little analysis or plan of what another coach is going to bring to the table. In a lot of these cases, we see that the mediocrity (or worse) continues well into the next coaching staff, and even far longer than that.

And that's the risk I think a franchise takes when they turn over coaching staffs after a few seasons of mediocrity or worse.

In this instance, if I'm the FO, I'm looking at the personnel on the field and asking myself "do I think the players I have on the roster are talented enough to compete with the better teams in the league". If my answer has been yes for a few seasons, and the team continues to be mediocre, then I probably make a coaching change.

If the answer is no (and I think in the Ravens case currently the answer is definitely no), then I'm asking myself "what good does changing coaches do?".

I had heard a lot about how the Ravens were going to keep Harbaugh, but have to wonder if that's revisited after today.

Harbaugh told us all week that the Ravens would go out there and play to win, but if that game is any indication, the players all spat in Harbaugh's face and gave him the middle finger. Even coordinators looked dejected.

Absolutely zero care or effort.

And what's worse is that CJ Mosley got injured playing in an entirely meaningless game.

Horrible. What boggles my mind is how awful the play calling was today, just terrible and the fact that this is what the team produced today on offense was just horrible, some of that falls on Harbaugh because Marty is going to get fired.

I don't understand playing your starters that late in the game (you're down 10 in the fourth and haven't shown you can even score). Why keep them in and risk next season?

The players and coaches all looked like they mailed it in on Harbaugh outside of SSS.

It's a bad look for Harbaugh to go through 2 OCs and have your team give up on you in the final game and lose like that, I would shocked if the team fired him today, don't think that happens but it wouldn't surprise me if we found him on the hot seat. Biscotti said he would tolerate missing the playoffs but what happened today was a disaster.

I still think next year is the make or break year for him, but this game was just... damn. It's really bad when it looks like a team gave up on the coach.

I think he is 100% on the hot seat. I wouldn't think the team would have fired him had this game been competitive, but this was embarrassing and there were unnecessary injuries.

I don't think Biscotti will be happy with this in the slightest bit.

I always ignored the Harbaugh trolls but I can't after today, this guy seat is hot at the moment. If we have a bad year or barely miss the post season then he's toast.

I just think there's some really good offensive minds that may come open (Payton, McVay, maybe McCarthy) and I don't want to see the Ravens miss out because they waited one year too long.

I'd love to have Payton, I'll pass on the other two. I just don't see him getting fired this year, would shock me. I feel the same way as you though, I want an offensive genius here so badly, it's what we really need.

Payton is on the trading block for really cheap this year and McVay is being touted as the next big thing around FO's.

I personally love harbaugh I think he is a good head coach he let's his coordinators do there thing and he is just the face of the franchise and a good leader of men and a motivator he isn't a great "coach" he relies on his coordinators for that I really think his coaching isn't the issue because I don't believe he does much of it

Don't think you're getting an upgrade from Harbaugh to McVay honestly. Payton is a difference because we've never had an offensive genius outside of Kubiak. But at HC? We could build great things for that.

Looks like John is getting ready to fire another OC...when does the blaming shift from coordinators to the head coach?

When the same exact issues occur when you change OC's that tells me Harb's has his special teams mind involved in the offense and he  needs to leave it alone.

Well, McVay is an offensive minded guy and apparently his understanding of the game as a whole is just really impressing coaches who may want to give him a chance as a first time head coach who need a quarterback guru.

Wish Payton would take an OC position but he will be someone head coach

Hypothetical situation:

Pees & Marty are fired and Harbaugh is given one final season to improve. We fail to miss the playoffs again next year and Harbaugh is eventually fired. What are the chances of the new coach needing to replace the then current coordinators? In some cases you could argue it'd be better to just clear the lot out now and bring in a new HC and coordinators rather than possibly changing them yet again next year but I also get those that think he should get another year.

When is Harbaugh going to shoulder his fair share of the blame? He's to blame for hiring these coordinators too, when does his judgement get brought into question?

Is Harbs on the Hot Seat? Lets ask this question.....

Did his coaching game decisions add to the win column, or add to the loss column?

I don't mind Harbaugh, but it's becoming increasingly obvious that he inherited an already great team when Ray Lewis and Ed Reed were here, and he hires awful coordinators and isn't an X's and O's guy. He's more of a motivator than anything. Is that what we need?

That may be the case, but like any young coach out there you got to give them time. My hope is that Sean Payton is given another year in New Orleans and then we grab him if next season is a failure.

I suppose it really depends on who you have as your coordinators at the time.

Let's say Adam Gase was your OC and your HC just got fired. If I'm the new HC, I look at what Gase has done (quite a bit of good as an OC) and say that he's worth keeping around.

Conversely, if I'm a new HC and there's Marty here at OC, I'm dismissing him.

Payton hanging around next year is all going to be dependent on someone trading for him. If no one  does, then we'll see next year. But again, I'd rather not miss that chance.

With McVay, I'd be willing to give him time. The Ravens have been on the downswing and need some time to get an influx of young talent. Let him come in, work with Joe, and make his mark. He certainly did wonders with Cousins.

Hate to say this but I think it is time for a new head coach. No I don't have a candidate, but I really think we need a new voice for this team. Probably won't happen, but there are always surprises on Black Monday.

I will say this- if the Ravens were to fire Harbaugh and trade for Payton, I bet he'd rally hard to trade for Brandin Cooks.
