[News] Eisenberg: Important Bragging Rights For Fans At Stake In Ravens-Redskins Tilt

12 posts in this topic

I see the Redskin game as an opportunity for the Ravens to start a new 3-0 run. Some good play calling and some good play in the coming weeks will tell us all we need to know about this team and its future this season.

I appreciate someone is recognizing that, at the least, older Baltimore sports fans for the greater part, really do hate the "deadskins" and it is not a friendly rivalry but a matter of disdain and distaste for anything burgundy and gold. It will be a shame when the visiting team's fan base tries to take over the stadium  again this Sunday but, unlike the Oakland animals,  these bozos are quite harmless. I hope the Ravens play for their paychecks and mount some rudimentary intensity in the pass rush to create enough confusion with Cousins that our O-line's inadequacies will not cost us another home loss.

I feel sorry for you, I too have a heavy heart come Sunday's, my daughter is a steeler/philly fan since her college days, don't know how it happened, it just did, can't change her, but love dissing on her very time we beat them. Go raves/o's.

Ouch, I live with an eagles fan but my son (not a huge football guy) still roots for the Ravens.

wish we played each other every season. would make for a good local rivalry. defense needs to get to cousins and force him into bad decisions and the offense must not be in a coma for 3 qtrs. offense must start fast and set the tone with early scores. if the offense struggles once again than harbaugh must make some tough decisions. either fire trestman or give mallett a shot and see if flacco is the issue. the late starts and struggles of the offense are too reminiscent of the cameron years and i hope they can resolve the issues.  kick some skins butt

I think that this article nails the rivalry on the head. It frames what is clearly a family rivalry based on geographies. The Steelers and Eagles are in much the same boat, it isn't a rivalry built on life and death divisional games that create an animosity between teams that a simple geographic rivalry can't match. Every game matters but divisional games weigh much heavier because of the overall playoff implications and what really matters in football, getting to the big dance. That road travels through your division, playing them twice a year for decades. I would categorize this as a soft rivalry. With the Colts leaving Baltimore, many fans who loved football had to choose to stay with their Colts, or go to the Steelers and Washington team, I'll admit, I those lean years I rooted for that same Washington team. I would wear Burgandy and Gold quicker than I would ever wear Steelers colors. Many fans didn't return to their Baltimore team when they returned, choosing to stay with the new teams they chose. So in Baltimore we see those Washington logos and those Pittsburgh logos quite frequently and when I see them I tease the Washington fan and curse the Steelers fan. So one week every four years it just seems odd to want to have to hate them.

A win is indeed a win, but this loss is more than a loss, it is that sinking feeling that comes with your season being over. Vacant seats appear in the background of glazed-eyed players thinking about "next year". This game is not about rivalry as much as vital survival.

When you play a team every four years it is not a rivalry by any means. All I know is that this Sunday there will be lots of Skins fans, and when Philly comes in December it will be loaded with Eagles fans. Every game in the NFL for the most part is an important game, not just a rivalry game.

I was in Wilmington,DE two weeks ago when the Eagles beat the snot out of the Squealers, and trust me that people on both sides were screaming their hearts out...it was chaotic, people hollering and cheering up and down the streets... Just because team's only play each other every four years doesn't mean it's not a rivalry, it's probably more intense because whoever wins gets bragging rights for four years...I have guys at work who still remind me that the skin's beat us last time we played, AND that even though we won the Superbowl that year, the Skin's were better cause they beat us in the regular season. Think I don't want a little revenge for that? No, it will never be a rivalry like Squealers, Bungles or Pats, but it's still pretty fun to want to smack the stuffing out of them!

The only people that want this to be a rivalry are the media. There's no rivalry here.

I have a disdain for their fans when they come here. Just like those yellow towel waving fools to the northwest, we have to cringe through 10,000 choruses of Hail to the Redskins before every game.

Outside of that and my disgust for Jack Kent Cooke, this other "Maryland" team to the south is insignificant to me and always will be.

When we lost the Colts, I hated that the redskins games were shoved down our throats. Never liked the Deadskins as they were a bunch of thugs back then.
I actually gave up football for 12 years (Outside of playing some fantasy for a few years) until we got our beloved Ravens (Baltimore Browns). I wouldn't say it's a rivalry for me but I never want to lose to them and smashing them to bits is a little better and I respect the Steelers and think that's a true rivalry however, it's nothing like I want to crush NE and Lady Brady!
