I think it has to do with how much the wind is catching it in the air. Gotta remember that the hire it does, the more it gets affected by the wind.

Pretty much just defending that specific call. We throw short far too often in the middle of the field also, but on that play, throwing to the sticks is pretty much never going to end well.
