28 posts in this topic

The Ravens receiver tells the story from 2011 of how some trash talk led to a heated rivalry between the two players when Wallace was a Steeler. Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin told Wallace on his first day in Pittsburgh that he should pick out a Raven to hate.

Nice coaching philosophy Tomlin. No wonder we think you guys are a bunch of thugs. We don't hate one Steelers player, we hate the whole team and organization.

The past is the past...what these 2 did back then had everything to do with rival teams being competitive and nothing to do with personally knowing each other. Now they can know each other for who they really are.

You can't be a Raven unless you hate the Steelers, and you can't be a Steeler unless you hate the Ravens, it's in their contracts........:) Good times....

Thanks for the history lesson that was probably in an article you wrote 5 years ago...could you describe how it was settled when Wallace got here?

More than "Things changed quickly when Wallace signed with the Ravens, however. The two squashed their beef immediately."?

Nothing wrong w/ what Tomlin said IMO.  It intensifies the rivalry and it motivates the player to beat the guy that you hate.

It's not hate. It is the fact to be a Raven you gotta LOVE beating the Steelers! And add in the Bengals now too. Time to throw out the word "hate" from our vocabulary, it doesn't make things any better using it and detracts from the real goal of winning..

fact is, players from both sides use that word, and we will never dislike the Bengals like we do the Steelers, not even close....

The Raven's and the Squealer's are mirror image teams...of course we don't like each other. And as much as I enjoy beating them on game day, I still respect the fact that they are worthy opponents...Hatred? No, but it's such a GREAT feeling when we knock the stuffing out of them...and I have a suspision that Mr. Wallace has already circled the dates when we play them.

For more on this issue of artificially manufactured hate between teams and rival players see my post in today's Late For Work article about KO's supposed grudge against Ravens not giving him more money and causing him to leave.

Hey Ryan you are doing a decent job on Garrett's podcast 'the lounge'. Keep it up, but let Garrett control the flow because he's really good at it.

I always knew the Squealers took this rivalry thing more serious than the Ravens did...u walk in the door and the coach asks you to pick a Raven to hate! That's awesome. I can see Billick doing something similar, but I don't think Harbaugh is wired like that.

Doesn't make it better.  It's a motivation factor so I understand where tomlin was coming from just like I understand how Suggs discusses Tom Brady.

That's a good intro, but where is the second half of the article... where the author describes how they "squashed their beef"? It kind of just..... ends.

Well said, but there is nothing wrong with saying, " hate". It is a very loosely used term in public.

brady "KICKED" Ed Reed in a game! "KICKED"! You can talk about me but don't spit or put your feet on me! Do you agree?! There is no place for hate because even after a game teammates and friends from the other teams trade jerseys and take pictures! Ray Lewis and Jerome Bettis respected one another and that's something alot of people had to respect and understand!

Our bye week in the middle of the year, plus right before the first steelers game and biggest game of the year to that point......um Thank You schedule makers!!!!!!!!!!! Playoffs are obviously the first priority. However if we can get the broncos and pats to get a couple losses, we might finally be in for a bye and home game or two. Kinda convinient for the pats that they play in the worst division in football and get a free ride to home field in the playoffs every year

I think "hate" is to strong a word for our players feelings towards theirs. I think "despise" would be a better choice. Although they despise them, they still have a ton of mutual respect.

Now between the fanbases, it's more hatred. I recall an article that described while our team bus was driving through their town heading to the hotel. an old woman , standing on her stoop, mooned the team bus. Our players were laughing, saying (did you see that, we just got mooned by an old lady).

You don't have to like someone to respect them.

Would've been funny if Wallace picked our long snapper or back up QB instead of Webb. Could see it now... Tomlin saying no Wallace, pick someone else lol
