Zachary Orr issue

17 posts in this topic

So before I say what I am going to say I need to make it clear I like most of what I see from Orr. I really do think Orr is our best linebacker in coverage and I also think he's better than Bynes and McClain were. My one issue with Orr which I have noticed at least once in every game is he runs right into blockers. Like right into blockers. They aren't engaging him. He straight up runs into them like its a gravitational pull.

Now like I said I really like him. This is just an observation I have made and hopefully he can fix it, because if he does our run defense will be that more disgusting.

I haven't noticed this but I have to ask do they look blatantly pointless? Because often times the lesser of the 2 ilbs in a 34 can be assigned to do exactly that while the other one cleans up and goes untouched.

Not saying this is what's happening, just thought I'd throw it out there that it's possibly schemed

Some are obviously to take on the blocker to free up weddle or Webb, but some seem absolutely blatantly pointless. The Crowell big run is a great example.

Interesting observation considering he's leading the team in tackles.  Tells me he's doing a lot more than just runnning into blockers.

Did you read what I said? I definitely stated he is doing a lot more than just running into blockers. He's doing a great job. It's just an observation I have made.

So then what's the problem. As stated above sometimes one ilb plays like a defensive fb and is assigned to blow up blockers so others can flow freely to the ball.

Some of that is also what play the offense run.  You may or may not be assigned to a blocker.  If there's a pulling guard coming your way it just may be your assignment.

Lotta stuff goes on in tos X'sand O's

Yes, I read what you said.  But I also took notice of the title of your post. "Zachary Orr Issue".  There really isn't an issue.

I wouldn't say Orr has been the best coverage linebacker. It's not just because Mosley has those two awesome interceptions. It's more that Orr just looks like he's still adjusting to that part of his game.

Linebackers are supposed to take on blockers to clog up the hole. Just watched the Crowell run on gamepass and it looked like he could have attacked the lineman more on his outside shoulder, but I'm sure his job on that play was to take on the blocker and clog up the hole.

I actually like the way Orr has played. He's been very solid in the run game, and his coverage is improving as well. One play that I didn't like from yesterday was the one where Bortles rolled out to his left, and Orr left his coverage to try and get to Bortles. He shouldn't have released coverage there, and Bortles took advantage by completing an easy pass for a first down. Other than that, I think he's certainly played well and fits the defensive scheme just fine.

If I do have some knocks, it just seems as he makes some fundamental mistakes, like in Crowell's big run in the Cleveland game. Instead of gap discipline waiting to tackle the RB, he was locked with a Dlineman, while Crowell ran right by without Orr looking. I think he will clean all this stuff up! Understand coverages a little bit better. Its his first real shot at being a staring ILB in the NFL, although he started getting more playing time at the end of last year.

However, with that being said I absolutely love what I have seen from him so far. Him and Mosely are looking extremely fast and aggressive. Orr is a sideline-to-sideline ILB, and he seems to swarm to the ball very fast. He gets to the screen plays first. I like what I am seeing thus far. Hue Jackson even commented on how fast he plays.

he has been better then expected.

I was fine with him starting next to CJ while others had their doubts. So far he's exceeding expectations and I haven't heard opposing TE's names being called very often this season.

This is what I was trying to get at, but you clearly said it better.

He wasnt great in week 2, but he's done well considering that hes undrafted. I think hes probably going to fill the role until we upgrade.

Technically orr had 2 turnovers Sunday if you count the blocked kick fumble recovery plus his game sealing pick. I think he's doing pretty well next to cj.
