Jeremy Zuttah

57 posts in this topic

WE all seem to forget that jeremy zuttah was brought in to replace the hapless shipley and gradkowski, lets not forget that. Lets also not forget our O line changed for the better when we brought him in, our run game got better pass protection vastly improved, and we had a 10-6 season. Zuttah has been a huge factor in the ravens success up front the last few seasons, granted yes he is off to a rough start, i feel he just needs time to settle in. Lets not forget also that KO left this last offseason, so its going to take some time for everybody to get back in sync with one another. Just give him a chance i am sure everything will be fine down the later parts of the season i am quite sure of it.

I've given him numerous chances. All he is is a stop gap. His run blocking is mediocre. He has held back this run game last year and this year. I don't care how much better than he is than Gino. That's like saying Red Robin is better then McDonald's. Of freaking course it is, but don't kid yourself and say you don't want Five Guys because Red Robin is good enough.

In the past two years, Zuttah might have had the least to do with our success up front. Only Hurst has been worse.

Stealing my burger analogies, I see.

Figured it was the hot topic, so why not?

Lol I'm just kidding. Speaking of burgers, we need more beef in the middle of our offensive line if you know what I mean. We have a 1/4 pounder in there and we need a 1/2 pounder but I'll even settle for a 1/3 pounder. Zuttah is really screwing up a lot of the run game and some of the pass, but he's really messing up the run game. Him and Forsett are probably the biggest problems with our run game at present since he's starting out getting pushed back a yard off the ball and Forsett is just blindly running without being patient and letting the blockers open them holes.

We just need somebody that can move and not be moved. Like, even Chris Meyers formerly of the Texans could move guys and he was only 290. We need more muscle. About 15 more pounds of functional strength sounds right.

Quick twitch muscle? So you're saying put Zuttah on a diet plan and clean up his eating so he can get that quick-twitch muscle?

I feel like he has quick twitch, he's quick and moves well. He just lacks oomph. Maybe it is more quick twitch that he needs. He's on the lean side as is so I'm not sure if that's it. He's just not a strong dude

There must have been a big change in the run game philosophy. The Zone blocking scheme was a perfect fit for a guy like Forsett because he could just stay patient and wait for a hole to develop. In a gap scheme he pretty much has been running to whatever develops and in most cases, nothing and just runs towards a brick wall. It's why Terrance West hasn't been much better either.

Who would be a candidate to replace him that's on the roster? Jensen?

I think so, he has the most experience there and seems to be the more capable one.

I don't see why everyone is talking about Urschel or Jensen as the magical solution to Zuttah. Are we forgetting how badly Jensen was getting pushed back on some plays in preseason? He's probably not going to be much better than Zuttah, if he's better at all. Urschel is probably seen as a backup guard and 3rd-string center behind Jensen, looking at the preseason snaps.

LOL, I just spit out my water.  Zuttah needs to put on about 9-12 lbs of quick twitch muscle by Sunday and he'll be nasty.

BTW, where is dude?  Guess he's mad that Camp couldn't stay healthy or Henry isn't the beast that he thought he would be.

I enjoyed watching Zuttah past 2 years.   But he has been good this year.  That's all there is to it.  If he keeps it up, we have to find another option.

Zuttah: Jeremy improved from the opener. He was bulled for a full pressure by Paea (Q2, 2:51) on a long incomplete thrown for Perriman. He had 2 other pressures where he was beaten individually, but another player also surrendered pressure to reduce his share to half (Q2, 7:23 and Q1, 2:12). For the second straight game, Jeremy missed exactly 7 blocks and for a variety of reasons. He made 3 blocks in level 2 including a nice combination block, which was his highlight.

Scoring: 71 plays, 61 blocks, 7 missed, 2 (1 + 2 X ½) pressures, 57 points (.80 per play). This week he gets a solid adjustment for having to face Shelton. That’s a C at center.

@Filmstudy's break down on Zuttah vs the Browns.

I'd defer to Filmstudy and how he scored Jensen.  I don't think he played badly.  He finishes his blocks and he gets to the second level on running plays.  He has more lead in his shorts and has better feet and speed to the point of contact.

Urschel was hurt after the first Preseason game and didn't return until Sept 4th the week of opening Week. So after the Panthers game all 2nd team reps at Center went to Jensen but before that point Urschel was clearly the backup Center based on preseason snaps and practice reps I saw.

But I wouldn't be surprised if the injury has knocked him down at bit

My concern is he practiced all last week I believe, and yet was a gameday inactive. So either he's healthy enough to practice but not to play (which seems odd), or he was a healthy scratch, meaning he's pretty far down the totem pole on the depth chart.

Either way, expectation should be that Jensen is next in line for Center duties if an injury or change happens.

Exactly he is not even that bad.

He is probably the worst run blocking center in the division. He's pretty damn bad. He might even be the worst overall center in this division.

Just curious what you think of Jensen's play at center?

Me personally, I thought Zuttah was pretty good last season... easily one of our better offensive lineman. I found this nugget from PFF, which is obviously outdated, but it does highlight the fact that in 2014 and when he played in 2015, he was generally quite good.

https://www.profootballfocus.com/10-best-sack-less-streaks-among-centers/

Eh, he's at center, though, where you rarely face quality pass rushers, especially in the AFC north where the Browns and Steelers have had hefty DTs that don't rush the passer well from the A gap.

And even if his pass blocking record is good, his run blocking leaves a crap ton to be desired.

By the way, Mike Preston today suggested benching Zuttah. I know most people don't like him because his realism makes people uncomfortable, but he's got a good football mind and has covered this team for a little over two decades. Preston was once a linemen, too, way back in his day.
