Can't go on PUP, but very well could be headed to IR

Yes, my mistake. PUP is for players hurt in the preseason and unable to play.

Just to clarify, PUP is for players who show up to training camp unable to play.  Once they practice even ONE time, PUP is no longer an option.

I think Waller has a role. We seemed to feature him a lot to see what he can do in preseason so I think he has a role. He can be that deep threat TE we simply don't have. I'm not really sure one way or another that we'd bench Aiken for Waller, but I was also surprised we benched and cut JF so quickly so it seems we will make quick changes if we see a reason. I wouldn't count out the possibility.

It would be nice to have a TE who can go up the seam/get vertical. I haven't seen Waller at TE but my biggest question mark about him is his ability to chip block or better yet flat out block. He's going to have to be able to block OLB's and DE's who can rip even the best blocking TEs to shreds. He might only be there on passing downs but in that case you're giving the defense a better guess at what you're doing.

I can imagine him in that gunner role but Chris Moore seems good at it too. There's just not much I can picture Waller doing here, I'm also wondering whether we would like to activate Willie Henry as well Will Davis.

Last year I recall him getting downfield and laying blocks so I think he can block. I'm not sure if he was blocking OLB or linebackers or even CB or safeties because blocking those guys is very different than heavier pass rushers but we'll see.

and a position of perceived strength is now nothing but average.

I still think it's a strength. Pitta is having a really good year, Gilmore is a solid receiver and of course a monster blocking TE. Maxx had done great things on ST and blocking but hadn't produced (or really been targeted) as a receiver. It's a blow but that position still is deep.

We all saw Waller's solid pre-season and he can contribute on ST, too. I think he'll be activated.

Stinks, but it sounded like it needs surgery to fully heal.

Makes room for Waller, I guess

Agreed. I just hope that if it is the surgery option, they get it done now and don't wait till the end of the season. I want to see him back ready for the camps.

To continue.... Don't sleep on Daniel Brown, he can get down the field and cause some coverage problems with LB's. Not to mention he's got the hands!

Don't sound like there's any reason to wait on having the surgery

True, he was activated for a reason. Either someone was trying to poach him off the PS and/or he has a spot on gameday.

Actually glad Maxx is going to IR.  I'd rather they just fix the problem now than continue to wait and hope it gets better.  While I do think he had value to the team this year, he's still a guy we can afford to lose for now.  Let him get healthy and come back strong for next year.

Wouldn't say that. Since Crockett is a solid reciever and a very good blocker, Waller has the talent to be a good move TE, and we have Boyle coming back in a few weeks. Still deep.

Agreed. I think we breaks out next year because hopefully we FINALLY USE HIM.

I wouldn't say pitta is having a really good year unless you put it in context that most of us thought he should retire.  200 yards and 0tds through 4 games... I would say it's just a average tight end production

He's top 10 in yards and top 5 in receptions. Project those 21 receptions and 200 yards out to a 16-game season, he's 9th in yards and 3rd in catches compared to 2015's TEs.

That's something we need and lucky Pitta is producing that way after Watson went down.

Waller has shown nothing as a TE to date, just some pre-season stuff. Boyle is an unknown because who knows when he takes PED's again.

Waller is the second best non-kicking ST'er on the team. He was REALLY good before his suspension. This is a boost. Plus a fast 6'6 tight end with blocking capabilities can make some good mismatches.

True. We just have to see how it pans out with Waller. One thing for sure he does add more speed to the tight position and he's 6'6" which could be beneficial in any situation especially near the redzone.

Flacco has maybe two good seasons in his entire career.  He is actually slightly below average.  He is a game manager, that needs a lot of work on his mid range throws.  His average passes is 6.3 that means he is a glorified check down guy with an occasional deep ball (that he throws pretty well).

If we are honest with ourselves, he cant make players great, because he is not good enough to do it.

Explain Torrey Smith.  And Marlon Brown having a 7TD season. And Mike Wallace and Steve Smith resurrecting their careers here. Kamar Aiken.

It's funny: at the time of the draft, trading-up for Maxx was viewed as a masterstroke by our FO, since it sniped the Steelers, who desperately wanted Maxx as a successor for Heath Miller. It's not a total failure that we did this, though, since it then caused the Steelers to draft undersized slot-corner Senquez Golson, who is shaping up to be a bust for them. So even if Maxx ends up a disappointment, at least the trade-up caused the Steelers to draft a bust lol.
