Kamalei Correa - thoughts

273 posts in this topic

Correa showed up today. Appears to be turning a corner in terms of awareness on special teams. Made a great tackle and made a great read on defense and probably would have had a pick six.

Also on the field getting after passer in fourth quarter. Played more today. Played faster today.

He still seems to be a work in progress. He struggles when caught and doesn't seem like he has the ability to peel off. Didn't see him have to opportunity to use his hand movement. He's quick off the snap but right now he seems like hes best fit in a 2-down role. Looks great in coverage though.

Keep feeding KC reps...I like him on the edge, let him practice his moves, he can fake pass rush and drop into coverage, or hopefully Doom can teach him some speed rush moves, REPS are the key, keep feeding him, you may need him one day soon

He got absolutely blasted by a stationary blocker after getting a 10 yard head of steam. I laughed. But man his first step is special, if he puts it together he will be a problem. He has an extremely rare jump off the snap, you just don't see guys who can fly into the backfield like that.

Well, yeah. Once he's caught, he's caught. Right now he has no counter. But so is McClellan and he doesn't have the burst Correa has.

As an OLB you got to be able to peel and get off your blocks, I don't know if Corea can do that yet. I'm not saying he can't contribute but as of now he doesn't fit in the 3 down role and that's fine. I feel like we kinda expected this somewhat, I feel that he could be used for specific 4-3 packages, as a Will LB where he can roam the middle of the field and go side-line to sideline, attacking screens and blitzing time to time.

Hope he's not another arthur brown.

Arthur browns head and heart were never in it. This isn't a question about Correa. So that's a start. Plus he can be much more diverse

I liked what I saw out of Correa today. Granted, I only saw the game until just a little after halftime but still. I thought he looked good. Glad we won!

That cracked me up for real. I hope it's one of those welcome to the NFL moments that rookies learn from.

Orr's INT is where I saw him rush and he was badly held. Judon is being beastly as well, really didn't expect him to contribute, he's going to be a big part of our D going forward. I also wouldn't rule out BK. I know we keep saying that but we got ourselves an impressive draft.

Im keeping a close eye on Noah Spence and Ngakoue for comparison sake. Ngakoue probably has the edge right now but sample size is neglible. No immediate studs.

Haven't watched the game yet - guessing our 2nd rd pick didn't see too much action.

Bucs beat the Seahawks, Noah Spence showing up in the box score 1.5 sacks, forced fumble,

Spence has really come on strong in recent weeks. He finished the game with five tackles (two solo).

But he had character issues  can't have a team full of angels, Harbaugh.

Well and there's also the fact that we're not even a season into either one of their careers, so we know nothing about any of them so far.

Not like anybody really thinks we would be a significantly better team if we had Spence instead of Correa. I've watched him play multiple times already... seems like a JAG to me.

i dont think we avoided spence because of his drug problems. i think we avoided spence because he really was JAG. i mean he is playing at EKU, looking solid but nothing spectacular, and hes supposed to be this superstar first round edge rusher? no, he was just ok. ill admit i was on his hype train for a while but the more i watched film the more i noticed that he was mostly hype. i still wouldve taken him in the 2nd, but i wasnt exactly upset with passing on him either.

now the fact that we passed on whitehair, boyd, shepard, michael thomas, nick martin, sua cravens, and mackensie alexander for correa... well thats a bit upsetting in hindsight. i was excited about the correa pick at the time though and i still think he'll turn out to be a good player, hes just gotta find his skill set and settle in.

Draft Spence and its a strong chance u don't draft Judon. Judon and Spence have the same numbers but Judon has played half the number of snaps. I'd keep Judon.

As for Correa, the plan was for him to play next to CJ and i don't think anyone expected Orr to play so well. KC has to cut his teeth on ST right now and he's doing a good job of that. Do you want better production on defense from him, heck yeah but I can see why he's not getting many defensive snaps. The only game he saw real defensive action was the Jets game where he started and finished with 3 tackles and a forced fumble. I don't think we'll really see what he can before until next season.

i know one guys got 5.5 sacks and a few forced fumbles - so i take that as something and the other guy isnt even sniffing the field - so we can start with that

i think we would be a better team with spence - his 5.5 sacks on the season would be good for second on our team behind suggs, suggs might have a few more if we had spence this whole time - our pretty pedestrian pass rush might look half decent

come season end spence will have 10 or so sacks and half a dozen strips and people will still be saying i dont know if he would of helped our team

I wouldn't consider Noah Spence situation as character issue. He got in trouble twice for failing a drug test  which got him banned  from the Big Ten/ his college team. I'm not entirely sure Harbaugh  is demanding for choir boys or angels especially since their fourth rounder guard/tackle  Alex Lewis got in trouble for   assaulting  an air force cadet in which he had to serve 45 days in jail and  two years probation . Overall it just seems like The Ravens viewed Kamalei Correa as the better player than Noah Spence and for good reasons especially considering his versatility.

So thru 11 games he has 5.5 sacks (great numbers for a rookie) but you are saying as though it is a sure thing that in the final 5 games he will basically equal that number to hit 10 sacks as well as doubling his amount of forced fumbles.

its not a sure thing - was a hypothetical - just saying he'll have those numbers and people will still be saying oh but he wouldnt have helped us or made us better

anyway we'll see, no point crying over spilt milk - im just not a fan of the correa pick, Arthur Brown 2.0 - when we desperately needed some pass rush and still do

Just not seeing the field now.  Healthy scratch today.

damn. i dont get it, in his very limited playing time he looked really good, he was always around the ball and got his hand on one while isolated in zone coverage.

i think his epic failure against dallas got under harbaughs skin, when he had the direct hit on a late sweep and zeke just shoulder nudged from like 6 yards away and correa bit hard and left the wide open lane for a long run. that was bad.

its a shame really. he was probably the rookie i was most excited to see play. i seriously hope he make a big leap in year 2, that dude has a higher ceiling than any LB on the team right now

Maybe not since Doom is back and I don't think anyone should have expected him to go wild after not playing for quite awhile but he did  have a sack and force fumble in today's games.  It seems like Dean Pees is using Matt Judon in a similar role as  Pernell Mcphee so  that's Suggs (6 sacks), Jerngan (5 sacks), Judon (3 sacks, and Doom (1 sack) going after the quarterback on obvious passing downs. The pass rush gets even more better once Jimmy Smith returns but I think Correa has the upside to be a pretty good player.
