Is the defense for real?

I think next week is going to be a test, believe it or not. Josh McCown has performed exceptionally well against our defense.

It's still the Browns, though.

McCown is 2-1 against us.

I love that Young has stepped right into the slot. Hoping against hope we finally hit on a another player at CB in the draft.

I'm still skeptical about Jimmy, I think he still doesn't trust his instincts enough, especially early in games. I hope it's just rust.

Yeah, we should be patient and wait to see if they keep playing like this. I remember a while back the Ravens came out on opening weekend and just dismantled the Bengals' defense. Everyone was wandering if it meant that Cam Cameron turned the corner and our offense would finally be great. Well, we know how that story ended.

Tavon young may have had the best ball skills of any corner in the draft, and his ability to crank up and close in on the ball/receiver was unreal. Honestly he had no business falling to the 4th. Natural slot corner which we have desperately needed.

I think he fell because he's viewed as a high floor / low ceiling kind of guy. Polished for his age, but limited in a lot of ways.

I'd really like to see him put those ball skills on display for us; it has been far too long since we've had a DB who can go grab some INTs

Or was it just the bills?

160 yards makes us #1 so far in fewest yards allowed. And next week we play against Cleveland  :D

How many did the Niners surrender last night. Up until garbage time, they had allowed much less in terms of yards to the Rams if I remember correctly.

The Rams got 185 yards. So it was close but the Ravens' defense did a little better than the 49ers'.

Going beyond mere stats, I'd say the Ravens D did much better than SFO. We shut down a far superior QB (and offense).

Neither the Ravens or 49ers should brag. Week 1 last year they both looked like contenders... And both ended with a top 10 pick

Stop with the reality nonsense. Let us dream!

It'll be interesting to see how this defense plays against a top offense, and how it plays consistently in pressure situations. That is how we'll know for sure if this is for real or not....fingers crossed

The fans thrive on hope driven by small snippets of performance. This last snippet was beautiful and so we are thriving on renewed hope of defensive greatness. How dare you pour ice cold water on it? :)

Disagree. Jacksonville will be telling. They've got a lot of talent on both sides of the ball as well.. Bortles is a pretty good QB, and Yeldon is a rock solid RB with two good WRs, and a TE with off the charts athleticsm. To add onto this they have potentially very good talent in Ramsey, Fowler, Ngakoue, Jack.

I think it should be a good game.

The defense as a whole seems more energized this year compared to last year. Good defenses swarm all over the field and that is exactly what we did. I think the Browns will be an interesting test considering how they beat our defense pretty badly last year and have some better receivers(although the line has taken a step backwards without Mack and Schwartz). Jacksonville and Oakland will obviously be big tests as well, especially Oakland with an O-line to rival(and maybe better than) the Cowboys.

After the game Jimmy confirmed that the staff simplified the defense and brought out a lot of new looks. Glad that Pees finally changing things. Defense looked confident and ready the whole game.

One big reason the defense performed so well is that Jimmy allowed three catches for 33 yards to Watkins and Wright allowed four catches for 13 yards, holding Woods to one catch for eight yards.

If they get that level of corner play every single week, they'll be golden.

With the above in mind, I hope the Ravens shadow every single week. The Redskins put Norman in as a LCB only and it caused Breshaud Breeland to get absolutely worked. You'd have to hope that the Ravens saw this and allow the players to shadow.

That's what separates good teams from bad teams. The Redskins basically paid Norman top dollar to  cover non top dollar WR's. The Steeler game was even worse because Brown was the ONLY WR on their team that actually starts yet the Redskins STILL refused to put Norman on him. If they had Norman on Brown they probably would've had a chance.

I kind of understand it because the Redskins run mostly zone and the Ravens manned up a lot in this game, and it does put a lot strain on the DB's to get in alignment quickly, but you're right, it was a shame to see him limited to just one side. I'm sure Norman wanted to go with Brown on every play.

Maybe time for a hiatus until after that game then? :)

Dean pees has never been a shadow DC. He will call it on a rare occasion. This will be a huge boost

I think Jimmy is shadowing true #1s all year and I love it. Pees has too much on the line to not doing everything possible. His excuses have been taken away so he's taking away any thing that might cause doubt. Defense too complex? Simplified it. Best corner not on best receiver? Shadow. He's coaching for his job and maybe that's just what we needed.

Heres the real test..On Sept 25 @ Jacksonville. Jags are way better than the Bills and The Browns. They're a couple steps better then those two teams. Plus you're playing in Jacksonville where those fans are loud.

I think you mean their fans are in pools.

shadowing players require players on that defense to have a very high IQ.

they would need to be able to adjust pre snap since they will only figure out where the receivers will line up after they broke the huddle.

depending on the play call and players responsibility it can create lots of confusion if players have to run around at the last second to line up against the player they have to cover.

personally i think the defense plays better the less complicated things get.

The fans in the stadium that has had tarps around the top deck for years and has pools in the stands are loud?

If your top 2 cbs can flip their hips and play either side, and if your safeties are high iq and play well together, then you can shadow. Maybe that's what was missing and wright is a guy who can do that? Maybe the safety tandems have been too low iq and undisciplined to pull it off? Who knows, but if it works there's no doubting it turns a good defense to a dominant one.

A secondary capable of shadowing top 2 cbs to top 2 wrs like that is the difference between beating the Bengals or watching aj green toast chykie in the last minute to give up the lead.
