Is the defense for real?

Leslie Frazer helping A LOT those DBs. and Weedle man... that guy is the QB of the defense. Everyone is ready on every play knowing what to do. No miscommunications

Can someone please do a shop of a Weedle with Weddle's beard and in a Ravens jersey? I promise to make it my profile pic

I think it's too early to tell. Sammy was hurt, and they did lose Glenn for a good while. We also were missing some pieces too. I think we should be better than last year, but I doubt we are good enough to be that dominant every week

Yea - of course that comes out after the fact, in an ineffective performance.

It was actually reported he had "Foot tiredness" for a few practices before the game.

Well I had no idea about that, but none of their other WRs did anything either.

I noticed that. He probably realizes now that he's not entitled to his job anymore.

Pees was quoted as saying he prefers coaching from the sidelines and with Leslie Frazier in the booth, he has a colleague with experience to relay calls.

Fair enough.. but foot tiredness and severe pain arent exactly one in the same.

Can make a more informed judgement later on in the year. Tyrod Taylor is just not a QB that can attack a secondary and may be cracks the top 20 QB's in the league. He hardly even tried to test the secondary deep. A bunch of his passes were dump offs that barely traveled 5 yards. Some will say that is because of great coverage/he was hurried. I can't see great coverage on the TV because it doesn't show but at points we had decent pressure. But that's to be expected. If both of our tackles were to be taken out of the game, Flacco would be in a body cast and our offense would be a circus also.

This D's real test is going to come against a team that can attack the middle of the field. I still do not trust Mosley in coverage and have no clue how Orr handles it in space. Also, Webb has yet to be truly tested.

I wanted to edit this to also say that Shareece Wright has a proven track record of looking like a pro bowler one game to completely getting shredded the next. He showed this last year. If he can hold up every game without those terrible in between games, then that will go a long way also.

Check back in October for a better evaluation.

After the Browns game, we play Jags, Raiders, Redskins and Giants. All with very good passing attacks and all figure to have pretty successful offenses this season.

I'd give it at least 4-5 full games before any evaluation can be done.

I'd point out that, in 2015, in our first game of the year, we held the SB champs to 19 points and allowed about 220 total yards. We looked hungry and aggressive in that game. And we all know what happened the very next week and for several weeks after that.

But last year, there wasn't a qb in the league that couldn't go deep on us, every week we got toasted over the top.

2 massive improvements at safety, and suddenly a qb who throws an excellent deep ball, doesn't even attempt to go deep. This was a good test, they're a very athletic offense and we couldn't contain high end athletes for the last few years, but we absolutely shut them down yesterday at all levels.

Now we need to see how we handle the dink and dunk in the middle of the field. Which is something we all knew the bills weren't a threat to do to us.

I was very impressed outside of that one long drive Buffalo put together. But, again, as people said, they did great week 1 last year as well before a historically bad season.

I'm very hopeful and they looked great yesterday.

Yes without that it would have been a shut out. That play to his tight end should have never happened with better tackling on tyrod there.

Not sure how McClellan messed that up, it should have been a big sack

I'm not falling for this trap again. Came in praising the defense & Pees after Week 1 last season and we were hot garbage after that. So boo Pees! You still are mediocre at best! lol

I am pleased to see Pees on the sidelines. I have always felt that some of our defensive issues were because he was up in the booth rather than face to face with the players on the sidelines.

We said the same thing after week 1 last year against Denver. Let's just pump the breaks a bit. That being said we have ALOT to be excited about and that was a heck of a performance.

I have to say that we had many drives on offense that started around our 10 yard line. We may of had to punt several times but we would get up to our 30 or 40 yard line first, so it did not seem like we had many 3 and outs. Since we moved the ball a few series on offense, even before punting, the defense did have an opportunity to rest a little each change of possession. Also, the Bills did not put together too many long drives (3-13 on third down), to our defenses credit. We ate up a lot of time in the 4th quarter on offense with that long drive and we won the time of possession on offense by almost 6 minutes. Therefore, overall I think that the defense was able to stay rested during the game. I think this gave our defense an edge during the game. It might have made a difference if our offense had a lot of three and outs, especially in the 4th quarter.

Bills are a great test to our deep passing coverage so it was certainly encouraging to see us not allow anything there.

If our pass rush can get better than this defense will be serious. Za'Darius Smith is not quiet 100% since he was questionable coming into the game. Add in the fact that we should get Doom back soon and this defense will be real.

I think he got too confident and lost his fundamentals for that second in the heat-of-the-moment. He made me mad because I mean come on, really? That's a tackle you have to make, man. Then again, I'm not mad at him anymore even if he is the guy who will rightfully shoulder most of the blame since he was the one who missed. I am not sure how many, but I know other guys on defense let up and did NOT play through the whistle there, especially in the secondary. It was just a blown situation and a mental gaffe because the guys thought they had him and they didn't. Taylor was pretty elusive there to be fair.

I'll say this much.

In the previous three seasons, I would have assumed we were going to lose this game when I saw the score was 13-7 with a few minutes to go. It would be inevitable the defense handed the game over on a silver platter.

Not yesterday. That thought never once entered my mind; in fact, I was thinking and feeling the exact opposite.

A few things to think about this game, tyrod does not use the middle of the field... At all. That's been our Achilles heel in the last, short crossing routes. Also our secondary, did a great job covering deep and possibly the middle of the field, but we weren't contesting any passes. Could just be pees typical game plan, allow the short pass and make the tackle

Gyros? Shirt crossing routes? My lord! I hate auto correct, too

Yeah it was a fluky play but sometimes that can be the difference in a game, as we all know. Glad it turned out well in the end but I'm sure the coaches almost lost their minds.

Very true, have to reserve judgement for now. After some of the dreadful performances of last season,  they have a lot to prove.

So far, they look faster, more athletic, looks like Pees has changed some things up as well. Time will tell.

I think when Powers gets healthy and back on the field, he will do ok covering the short crossing routes. Hopefully, we should be able to hold down the Browns next week to give him and Dumervil another week to heal.

I was a little on edge yesterday but felt confident when we got the field goal to go up by 6 that Joe could lead us into Tucker range if there was enough time on the clock if they scored, since we still had a few timeouts. My blood pressure only really spiked when we gave up the turnover on the bad snap. I was the only one home yesterday watching the game and I had the windows closed due to the air conditioning, but I think my neighbors may have heard a few bad words bellowing from my home when that happened. ;)

Let's just enjoy how they played yesterday and WAIT for them to "stack" performances like this one on a more consistent basis throughout the season.  But, they played well.
