Week 1: The good the bad and the ugly vs Buffalo

377 posts in this topic

It started off the offense was hot and penalties held them back. Flacco hit like seven different guys in his first 10 completions I think it was.

Perriman catch had me pumped up, he should have had the second one as well but then he went missing.

S.Wright's open field tackling was superb all day..

Defense had a solid day, although there was little pass rush.

The playcalling deteriorated as the game went on strange.  Running game seemed capable, but was actually utilized for periods of time.  The few runs we did became predictable 2nd & long shotgun run.

Is the ravens defense this good or is bills offense just that bad? My enthusiasm is measured because I don't know if it's real or fools gold.

It's not uncommon to see a defensive slugfest in the first week as both sides start to find themselves offensively - and Watkins will have dealt with his own early-season jitters from that foot injury and little preseason action himself - but the Bills' offence is still a talented unit and it's worth noting that Pees called a fantastic game and regularly made the right in-game adjustments once the Bills started making headway. We would have held them to 0 had McClellan not fallen off Tyrod. I don't think they'll be this dominant every week, but there's still plenty to be excited about at this early stage.

He still hasn't given me the lottery numbers. If he can see the future that'll be the proof

I love how people were freaking out over Jimmy for allowing four catches for a whole 46 yards (for a long of 19).

Understand a few things first off. Jimmy was locked up 1v1 with Watkins without safety help. The safeties were rotated away from Jimmy to help Wright and Young. Jimmy also allowed three receptions on one or two drives in the third when the pass rush was non existent.  So, essentially, Jimmy locked down Watkins for three and a half quarters. I'd stop complaining if I were you all.

Also, it isn't up to Pees to tell the corners how far off to play or Trestman to tell the receivers how far to run their breaking routes. The players decide that. Don't blame Pees or Trestman for that.

Anyway, after a few miscues by Stanley, he played really well given the expectations. Mike Wallace has a real rapport with Joe Flacco, so that was really great to see. The run defense was dynamite up the middle with a few things to work on off the edge. Eric Weddle had a really great game for his first as a Raven.

The only real bad things I could see were 1. The edge of the defense couldnt stop the run or rush the passer for the second and third quarters. When Koandijo came in, I expected the Ravens to feast, but they seemed to regress. Also, Joe Flacco is clearly working his way back with unwillingless to run, but the mechanics weren't that great. He was throwing flat footed and his throws all seemed really low because he wasn't driving through them by stepping in.

No ugly when you win opening week.

MVP was Shareece Wright for sure.

I had been hoping all offseason that Urshel could win the Center job but he couldn't beat out Zuttah. Well Zuttah better get it together, because he was horrible today.

I agree 100% about Jimmy Smith. He played very well considering who he was covering all day.

Grim, since you were at the game what did you see with Jimmy Smith's injury?  Was he injured or just stepped on or something else? Would like to know what you actually saw.

Good to be back! So excited! Good game, though. My biggest concerns are A. Pass Rush (don't have one) and B. Joe Flacco (cautious about his movement.) We didn't have Dumervil, I know, but there was no pressure what-so-ever. Suggs looked really slim and fit, but played with heavy legs. Flacco played well, I guess, but was quite nervous about his knee.. All-in-all I'm so excited for new season and damn it's good to be back to football!

Not exactly what you want when your QB is recovering from a knee injury .

Oh, also one thing I noticed- the Ravens didn't look strong attacking the middle of the defense. That's not shocking with a rookie and Zuttah not being overly strong, but I was disappointed they didn't attack the edges more with the run game

I love the W, we did enough to get I liked the pressure up front, I def want to see a Speed package, Moore, Perriman, and Wallace on the field at the same time....if I was gonna be nitpicky, I hate the zone defense, there is always 4 defenders 5 feet away from the open guy on 3rd down, I thought Suggs did not set the edge on a couple plays,

thought there were missed opportunities on the offense, did not like the 3rd down play calling or the routes falling 1 yard short of a 1st down, did not think Trestman did enough with the studs he now has to create mismatches, I think we targeted SSS too much, I want to see Moore & Perriman get more targets, the middle of the field was open all day, saw minimal crossing routes, when Joe got into trouble when they were bringing the blitzes, there were zero screens, I did not think we established the run enough to create play action bites, but at least we can live to play another day as the positives were no injuries, and a W. I will take it

I knew Flacco spread the ball about a bit but I didn't think it was to as many as 10 players.

Offense and defense looked great for the 1Q, then everything went to poo, terrible play calling and highly questionable pocket awareness by Joe. Seems like we don't want to use our new weapons a lot, it was always just one pass to a non-Steve or Wallace player, sans dumb dump-off pass. Erratic pressure.

Good - Shareece Wright and the defense.

Bad - Our offensive sputtering on and off the entire game

Ugly - Bills offense and our Center

The defense looks good. Would of been a shut out if McLellan would've wrapped up instead of just hitting high and bouncing off. But gotta give it to Tyrod - he made the play. And frankly if you would've told me before the game that Tyrod would only break the pocket for one explosive play I would've taken it all day.

The most important thing I saw was when we needed to in big moments we made plays -- both sides of the ball. Picked up crucial first downs late in the game to keep the clock rolling and made big stops on 3rd down.

Jimmy did well with a tough test. Shadowed Watkins all game and held him to under 50 yds. Really allowed us to key coverage in other areas.

Defensive game plan was great.

Moved the ball well early and then idk... Things just went stagnant. Too much pressure up the middle for sure. Joe doesn't look 100% confident yet. There were a couple times when the pressure was mounting that he took his eyes away from down field and started looking at the bodies around him. But I guess that's to be expected some.

So happy for Perriman to make that catch. Incredible against one of the better up and coming corners in the game.

Wallace is looking like an x-factor. The TD, jet sweep and another 3rd down conversion... Very encouraging.

West made some great plays early but really slowed down late. Looked more an issue with play calling, rhythm and push up front than him. He was getting hit in the back field or at the line every play in the 2nd half.

And Forsett showed he's not just going to give up the job. It was him with the game on the line getting the job done.

tucker earned that money. He's automatic.

Overall great to get the win. Never seemed out of our control. Much more dominant performance than the score indicated. Keep in mind:

LT, LG, C, QB, RB1, TE1, WR1, WR2, and WR3 all playing in their first game ever, first with the Ravens, or first in a year returning from injury. It's going to take time to get the consistency down and shake the rust off. But there was enough positives, coupled with the defensive performance to be excited.

This is a competitive team.

Zuttah went in IR last year if I recall correctly. Later than the other but it's been a while for him.

Oh, and where are all the obnoxious Bills fans at now?

I left a few posts in their prediction forum. I'm not typically into that sort of thing, but I started hitting the sauce a little earlier than usual today.

Mili when you have a rookie LT, and LG it suddenly becomes a lot harder lol. Add in a Rex Ryan defense, a QB who was clearly hesitant to play like he normally does, with new blood at WR. We had a damn good day on offense, especially the first half.

Give the offense time to mesh. There's a lot more potential than last year and we flashed..

But seriously Trestman.... RUN THE DAMN BALL
