Extremely disappointed we let Terrence Brooks go...

You won't get far in the NFL as a safety if your covering skills are poor.

You also need safeties that can come down hill to support the run. Keep in mind Ravens won a Superbowl facing Luck, Brady, and Manning, with Pollard who was not a great cover safety. He intimidated guys coming across the middle. His hit on Ridley turned the tide, he put Gronk on the shelf on a couple of occassions. Safeties also MUST be physical. A young , physical safety like Brooks should have been retained over excessive depth at LB with Chris Carter or 7 CBs. Two ingredients that the Ravens had with each Superbowl team was a physical blocking FB and a knock out safety.

True - but Pollard had Ed Reed...

Brooks got more than enough time to justify the high draft pick invested in him - and IMHO he's failed to. Who's to blame... we'll see. If he lands on his feet and proves to be a useful S for the Eagles than it wasn't on him.

You do realize they are on other teams' practice squads, right? If the Ravens think they can help us, they can sign them (or anyone else) off of any practice squad in the league. That person then has to be on the 53-man active roster though, not the practice squad.

good point

personally,i would of cut PERRIMAN and kept BUTLER,you'll say i'm stupid but you'll see,we will be lucky to get 4 games a year out of PERRIMAN and BUTLER will be on the field way more!

Perriman will bring something Butler won't and that is respect for his speed. Just look in the one game he played, when he was on the field the safeties were playing deep. Wallace will command the same respect, so on plays with them on the field it will leave the middle and short plays left with weaker coverage and open up the run. Chris Moore also has that speed, can you imagine a defense trying to cover all three at once? Those three speedsters combine with what we can do over the middle with Smith, Aiken, other WRs and TEs, then you throw in the running game. Our OC has one problem; if we don't produce he has little excuse outside of massive amounts of injuries.

The good thing with Butler is right now he is on a practice squad and we can still sign him away with a spot on our 53 as long as he stays on the PS. I still think we may do that at some point this season. Sad for him right now we have a lot of options at WR and TE if everyone stays healthy but a limited amount of spaces. The press makes it seem like TE is now a concern but only if Pita can't stay healthy. We have decent talent on suspensions that will be able to join the team plus Juice and several WRs have capabilities to play TE.

All said and done we aren't off bad but I would have kept Butler if it was my choice and probably would have cut Henry. I would have kept Brooks over Lewis also, but I'm just a Monday GM. We also have enough CBs that would have the capability to play safety if injuries required it.

I was kind of surprised by the Brooks move as well until I thought about it. He was a safety who was good at playing linebacker. A liability in coverage but a sure tackler close to the line. He just didn't develop into the player they tried to draft.

I still think we need ILBer help, just not comfortable with that situation...Not sure why we wouldn't take a look at Manny Lawson who was a starter for the Bills....

prop because manny lawson hasnt played a game in high school, college or the pros at ILB

Ochi is still very young and may have a high ceiling, but the chances that Butler becomes a star are pretty slim. At this point, not a single GM thinks he is good enough to be on an active roster, and this is at least his 3rd year in the league. He needs to make someone's roster before he can have any chance at becoming a star.

Our pass defense was not very good the year we won the SB. Pollard did have some impact plays in the postseason, but as the league uses more and more spread, pass happy offenses, I don't think Ozzie wants safeties on the field that can't cover. On a side note, I would say Pollard's hit on Ridley pretty much finished the Pats off, but it didn't turn the tide. We were already dominating the second half of that game.

I had Butler making the team, but it's not the end of the world. During the regular season, your top 4 WRs play. If your a 6th or 7th WR, you aren't playing on offense, just ST. So it's no big loss. He signed with Tampa over us because he has a better chance of playing. I had 2 problems with the cuts, first is Ochi. He looked good, especially coming from a small school. Imagine if he had more time to develop. I don't know why they kept Carter over him. Carter had his moments, but Ochi has more upside. Second is Brooks. Why would you keep Lewis over Brooks? Lewis is old, grades out as one of the worst Safeties, can't play ST, and would save you money if you cut him. Brooks is better, and he's younger, with an extra year of control. I don't mind losing Forsette, cause Dixion and West looked so good, but with Dixion hurt we are thin at RB. Bring back Ochi and Brooks and get rid of Lewis and Carter.

glad to see Brown and Onawassor back, the tight end position is still not set and Onawassor could be a find at LB.

I agree on Onsauwor, he could be a good find. Wish Ochi would have stayed.

Agreed. Letting Ochi go is a major headscratcher. Don't get that one at all

While I'm not a big fan of Lewis at all either, Cutting Brooks surprised me at first but I understand the move. They guy has all the physical traits to get the job done. But for whatever reason he just doesn't make plays. He also likes to go for the big hit over wrapping up-maybe he learned from Elam. I think that non-interception in that Lions? game-preseason, could've been the writing on the wall. I know it was just preseason, but you have to make plays. Especially if they are handed to you. All of that said, I'm still surprised we cut him. I would've cut ELAM before all of our cuts, esp Brooks. Lewis is a veteran back up, but he doesn't seem to make plays either. Ozzie is really testing my patience holding onto Elam though. The man cost us a shot at a superbowl imo.

Ravens were dominating the Patriots 2 years ago with 2 14-point leads and lost the game. Why? Patriots running free in the secondary and no one was making tackles. TJ Ward, Ryan Clark, Bernard Pollard, John Lynch all have rings and none were considered great cover safeties. They simply intimidated receivers coming across the middle and were sure tacklers. Brooks is not in the above mentioned players category, but he was the best tackler in the secondary. Weddle, Levine, and Webb will struggle to bring guys down in the open field.
I think the Ravens have a strong roster now, but teams will test our small safeties ability to tackle.

The Rules changed and brutality is no longer allowed (Refs own the game more than guys like Pollard and Reed). That twice blown 14 point lead game should be banned from Utube. That game also demonstrated how Bellichick and crew were at the top of their game. Pees should take blame for that debacle IMO

Elam is on the bottom of my list too. I would have kept Butler on the PS but the Jets picked him up on waivers for their PS.

Although I totally agree with your first statement. Blame no one. Ravens had practice squad players in the secondary. No way were they going to stop the well oiled offensive machine of Brady and company. I was proud of our team for being as competitive as they were. In my opinion our coaching staff proved themselves, in that game, as one of the best coaching staffs ever in the NFL.
