[News] Late For Work 9/2: Eight Takeaways From Ravens Preseason Finale

So if we have Wallace on the other side of Perriman, the defense has to either play double high safeties and open up everything underneath, or leave one of them in a one-on-one matchup. We haven't had the skill players to create matchup problems in a long time(if ever), but it looks like defenses are going to have to pick their poison this year, especially since we have a qb that can make every throw.

Three guys that make the roster that I have questions with:

Camp. Coach/front office favorite who hasn't really shown me anything since being drafted. Has the size, speed and athleticism, but still a work in progress...basically handed the returner position and hasn't proven capable...how long do you need to evaluate his abilities?

Henry. Seems lost out there at times, mistake prone, definitely needs polishing. Will make the team because he's a 4th rounder, but I could see him being inactive come game day. Has the raw talent, but still developmental in my opinion.

K. Lewis. My best scenario is that a veteran safety(who doesn't cost an arm and a leg)get's cut by another team with too much depth at safety and Ozzie swoops in and snags him, then waives Lewis. I hate too be hard on the guy, but he's below average at best.

Camp has been productive when he's been on the field. He has shown quickness, the ability to separate, good hands, the ability to make catches in traffic, and the ability to make people miss in the open field. He's shown all that and made plays in a very limited amount of snaps. He hasn't proven that he's capable of staying healthy, but he has proven he is capable of playing at a high level when he's been on the field.

When? I saw him run one WR reverse for 10 yards. Other than that he hasn't done anything and has been injury prone his entire stint with us. Butler better make the cut over Camp.

If Camp cut (and l will feel awful) the Patriots probably will get him and he will be a beast with the Patriots. He be there Wes Welker for them and will probably never be hurt again.

If Campanaro holds on to the ball one time last night there would be no discussion. He really made this a mess....he may lose his job over it. So, the Ravens will probabaly keep him as the 7th WR, however IF and this a big IF a player comes available that fits a need I think the Ravens risk Camp to Waiver and the PS.

Brooks, Henry , KC, Allen and Pierce all make the team due to injuries at their positions and good play during the preseason.
Josh Johnson will land somewhere most probably, if not he will be on the Ravens PS.

In his rookie season, he first got significant playing time in Cinci. He converted a couple 3rd and longs. One of them was in traffic, and one was a tough, diving catch. Then there was the Tampa game, where he "Randy-ed" the DB(Brandon Williams' words) for a long TD recepton. I remember a simple out pattern he ran in that game where he was face to face with the DB, he made a quick move, and in the blink of an eye, he was wide open on the sideline, and the DB was left there like a statue. That really showed me that he had the quickness to get separation against NFL DBs. Then he got hurt until the playoffs, and in NE, he caught all 4 targets, including a first down conversion on the final drive, where he got hammered and still held onto the ball. Last year, he didn't get much time with the offense until the Pitts game, where he had a couple catches, including a 3rd and long conversion, and he turned a loss into a TD on a running play. The times where he's gotten consistent snaps with the offense have been few and far between, but like I said, when he has been on the field, he's shown the ability to be a very good slot receiver.

Yeah, totally disagree.

1. Patterson is exclusively a kickoff returner... he doesn't return punts, so he only solves half of the returner problem.
2. He's not a very good WR. We've got multiple young guys on this team who does what he does better. No chance he would ever get higher than 3rd or 4th on the WR depth chart. He can't even ascend high in a very weak group of WRs in Minnesota.
3. As I addressed yesterday in another thread, the difference between Patterson as a returner and just about anybody we sent out there from 2015 was 10 yards a game. That's it. 10 yards.

Trading for 10 yards doesn't make much sense to me.

Are you assuming that Patterson doesn't know how to return punts? Maybe just maybe he's a great punt returner but they fear him getting injured since they spent a first round on him. He averaged 25 yards per punt return in college. Just saying.

Pretty safe assumption. He's not being used barely at all on offense, so whats the fear of him getting injured? If he gets injured, are they losing a big part of their offense? Of course not. Its like us saying we aren't going to use Campanaro on returns because we value him as a receiver.

Plus, the injury concerns appear to be non-existent league-wide when it comes to punt returns. Antonio Brown returns punts, Patrick Peterson returns punts, and Ed Reed returned punts. This notion that punt returners are at more risk of injury to me never really made sense, and as myself and others have challenged in the past, there appears to be no actual data to support this idea either.

If he was a great or even good punt returner, regardless of his value to the offense or any other unit, he would be returning punts.
