yeah i agree - the gameday roster sizes dont need to get bigger but it just means that more players have a chance to develop

I almost think they should increase the active roster from 53 to 70 and just do away with the practice squad.

if he ends up on baltimore ps he might get a similar deal to the pats long snapper or whatever - or an older type deal where he has to go to the navy yard 3 times a week around his training

And he could still serve in Reserve status in the military if he wanted as well, I believe.

Would be very surprised

Special teams contributor and that height of his would be useful. Don't think he should be kept over a certain other receiver that was let go but it's possible. I doubt he's making the cut though.

Football is just so interesting because there's no real viable "minor league". Baseball is obvious, theres tons of leagues in Hockey, and Basketball there's the D-league and so many European leagues where guys get drafted from. It would be nice to see more guys have a chance to develop for a year or two in an NFL setting

So, he'd be reserve everywhere

I have a feeling steelers will get the best out of Justin Gilbert...smh

I mean, they aren't actually fielding consistently good DB's and haven't for a while.

Better not. Butler outperformed him.

But Matthews has shown he can make plays  on special teams as a gunner which Butler has not shown at all.

Wow. What more could he have done? I mean I understand the logic as he would have been last on the depth chart anyway and likely inactive on game day but what about when injuries occur ? Plus you  gotta think about next year once sss is gone. I would've hated making this decision.

Great point.

If we did sign him, he would live on game day inactive.  He deserves better than that. Cutting him gives him the best opportunities elsewhere.

Good point. I almost completely forgot he was on special teams.

That's a hard one if I had to chose between Mathews and Butler. Imo Butler did more recently and has been consistent. Mathews a lil behind Butler but has more upside. I think Aiken can do what Butlers been doing. But I think most people like the big WR's like Mathews that can use their height and body to make all types of catches.

dont get me wrong. matthews played well and is more of a speciman that butler. Having said that butler has never let us down whens played and was the most impressive WR we had during the pre season.

Question to everyone: is there a reason why a few players (can't remember the number exactly) have to be inactive on gameday? I never knew the logic behind that.

Yeah true. Its kind of like the saying thorough bred horse versus workhorse. I think Butler brings his lunch every day to work and works his butt off. I wonder if Butler tried Kick or punt returns?? May the best guy win!

This is where we all fall in love with mediocre players. Butler is a good guy and played solid in the preseason when his name was called.. But he's not good enough for everyone to get upset over for getting cut. He's just not that good.

And it might be on our practice squad - who would you cut for him to make it?

I truly believe his lack of snaps early in the Preseason was to try and preserve tape on him so they could in fact slide him under the radar onto the PS.
