[News] Late For Work 9/1: If Things Get Dire At Tight End, Ravens Have Potential Trade Partner

35 posts in this topic

Kapron-Moore hasn't done squat. If we can trade him for an over the hill tight end as a security blanket, why not? The best they write about this guy is that he is an "elder statesman' meaning old, and "veteran leadership" meaning his productivity stinks. Yeah a great deal. I can't believe the writer has the gall to bring up the Monroe deal in a positive light. Monroe was a bust. He is the reason Joe got clobbered and was out for the year. Finally the Ravens saw that, after giving him a fat contract extension of course. I don't have a problem starting Lewis and Stanley. Both looked good.

Why not trade him if he's not gonna make the cut anyway - at least you get something for him that way. the sooner, the better, to get new guy acclimated.

Are any of our tight ends playing tonight?

Pretty sure Waller will play. His last chance before serving suspension.

The real problem is that we have gotten very little out of the 2013 and 2014 drafts. Let's hope the 2015 draft breaks that trend.

I see no need to trade for a TE. You have Brown on the roster right now who knows the playbook and has a familiarity with our QB's. He'll get waved and resigned to the practice squad where he'll remain in case of emergency, until we get Waller back at least.

Trading for a TE is the last thing we should do. We already have so many and it's not like everyone is injured for the whole season. Why should we give up a precious draft pick for a position that will be even more log-jammed if we acquire a new TE.

I have to agree.Too many times we don't give our own guys a chance and we waste cap space bringing someone in who can't be productive because he doesn't know the system. Like you said, its just four weeks and only if someone gets hurt. By the time you need a TE and he gets familiar with the system, he will get cut to make room for Waller who has really done well this preseason. Right now we have three TE's which is what most teams carry. And if at this point, Williams keeps ending up on the injury report, it is time to cut ways. I don't see a lot out of Williams that Daniel Brown can't do.

Ozzie is patient. He'll wait for the final cuts tomorrow and then reevaluate his own 53 man roster. If he believes there is somebody out there that would add to the strength of the team and as long as it isn't zero sum, he'll make that move in a heartbeat. That's how we built our team. In Ozzie I trust.

One cannot help wondering if it's a requirement for sports writers of today to overreact everything? "Dire situation" at TE??? Trading for a TE???

Really?

We need to trade for a good CB if anything

Basically impossible.

Maybe if Ozzie gets so drunk he trades 2 first round picks and Jimmy Smith for Sherman... ;)

We also have Juice. He can play the position till Waller serves his suspension and Pitta's finger is better.

We should just wait and see who Washington releases- they have a lot of depth at TE- their GM, Scott McLoughan is a stud- wish we had him instead. He's turned that team around, and unfortunately, they will beat us when we meet to play- unfortunately, we're still a year or two away from the playoffs.

Stud? Hardly. His 1st Round draft picks have been - DT Kentwan Barner, WR Michael Crabtree, LG Brandon Scherff (#5 overall), WR Josh Dotson. The 49ers were horrible under his leadership. It wasn't until he left that they drafted well and became the best team in the NFC. The Skins success has more to do with getting rid of RG3 than anything and even the average fan could tell Cousins was a much better QB. He gave "Pot Roast" (just released by the Pats) $ 4 million, signed Chris Culliver (released and signed min deal with Dolphins) for $32 million last year. $32 million for Culliver? And then he goes out and WAY overpays Josh Norman - $14 million per year - $50 million guaranteed (His cap number is $20 million next year). Hardly the moves of a Stud GM. I'll take the Hall of Fame player, that will be a Hall of Fame GM, that's drafted 5 Hall of Fame players (Lewis, Ogden, Reed, Suggs, Yanda)

Agreed. That's why when I try to figure out the 53 man final roster, I almost always leave one spot open, because Ozzie makes a living getting at least one player off the final cut waiver. If he thinks there's a player out there who helps the team, he'll make the move.

Well, I agree sportswriters do tend to over react, but Ellison does say "IF" things get dire, so i'll give her a pass this time. She is right that this was a position of strength a month ago, and now there are plenty of questions, but i'm really not that worried, I think we can manage with what we have.

Examples? Would love to see the names of players specifically that the McLoughan signed/drafted/released that "turned that team around".

Obviously you can see why saying that a team that just recently won the worst division in football with an uninspiring 9-7 record and then got blown out in a home playoff game is "turning things around".

Not quite the sample size you are looking for.

I don't see any reason to believe that we're a year or two away from making the playoffs. Our offense is deeper and has more speed than ever before. Joe has a great blend of speed and possession targets to throw to. We have plenty of O-line depth, except at LT, and Stanley has looked great so far. Our offense was ranked 11th last year before Flacco got hurt, and that was with no speed whatsoever, James Hurst at LT, and Wagner coming off Lynsfrac surgery. Our defense was ranked 2nd in the second half of last season, and we'll add a healthy Suggs, healthier J Smith, Weddle, and CB depth. The only key player we lost was KO. We have never missed the playoffs with Flacco/Harbaugh when we weren't derailed by injuries, and I think this roster is as deep and talented as any we've had in a while.

I like that idea but we're loaded at Wr.

This is probably one of the most absurd post I have seen in a while. You have to be a Redskins fan, or you have no clue about anything relating to the football business.

Fun fact... in three years, Patterson has never returned a punt.

He's specifically a kick returner, and he would have virtually no role in this offense, since he's not a good WR and there's at least two guys on the roster that do everything he does better than him.

As a kick returner, lets explore:

In the last three years, Patterson averages just about 30 yards per return.

In 2015, our combination of all returners netted about 25 yards per return. So compared to what we put out last year, which wasn't great, he's worth about 5 yards per return, or roughly 10 yards per game.

So we're going to trade for a player who's exclusively a kickoff returner in order to get us 10 yards a game?

Ummmm... no......
