Cuts from Other Teams We Might Consider

Two different "theories" here:

1. If you're Minnesota, and you want to try to do the whole Broncos 2015 thing, where you run the ball all the time and play great defense, than Mallett is horrible. The only thing you care about is that your QB doesn't turn the ball over. Its what got Brock Osweiler a huge contract. You don't have to be great, you just have to be young with perceived room to grow and generally careful with the football. Biggest knock on Mallett is the "gun slinger" mentality. He's fearless when it comes to throws, but like somebody like Favre, that can lead to a lot of turnovers in short periods of time.

Its why Mark Sanchez is likely getting booted from Denver. Nobody really thinks Trevor Semien is really any better than Sanchez in terms of skill sets, but Sanchez turns the ball over way too much.

2. If you're Minnesota, and you're more interested in finding competition for the starting job in the near future, due to the injury risk/unknown with Bridgewater, then guys like Glennon, McCarron and possibly even Mallett make sense. McCarron in particular is attractive, because like I mentioned above, he protects the football pretty well.

That's true although so far mallet has protected the ball pretty well and hasn't made any erratic throws. Obviously the one int. off wallers chest wasn't his fault . just preseason though so I know its not anything to rave about. I can just tell he has matured quite a bit as a qb physically and mentally and has humbled himself since coming to Baltimore. Him and mccarron are equally intriguing in my eyes. Maybe with mccarron a step ahead BC he's younger I believe. But obviously it will take more to pry him away from cinci.

Remember on Mallett that this is a guy that was literally available for anyone that wanted him late last season.  Of course, there are some personal issues that went along with that, but the point still remains.  I think his value has increased a bit based on the fact that everything seems to be going well here, at least as far as games and attitude goes.  Still, if someone wanted him, they could have had him.

Right.

I look at it this way... the trade price for Mallett is realistically probably any pick. The trade price for somebody like AJ McCarron is significantly higher, probably as high as a 2nd rounder.

Mccarron is a great fit for Minnesota. Run game and great possession targets. He's got 3 targets that will bail him out regularly against a stacked box, all he has to do is distribute it properly.

its easy for someone with the history of suggs to come in and look good right away, but he has rehabbed all offseason and is probably still far from football shape, going into the season without being in peak condition can lead to quick fatigue, same goes for dumervil.

also, why would we want a 3 down edge defender? we dont need that, we have our 3 down defender, we have the edge setter for the strong side, and we have rotational pass rushers who are unproven, we need one more edge rusher, if ANY of our guys get hurt or suddenly disappear due to fatigue(and there is a real concern for either of those to happen to our top 2 edge rushers) then we are suddenly looking very bare once again.

people saw a good performance from zds and judon in the preseason and suddenly think were set at pass rusher, maybe our starting pass rush is good, and our rotation is good, but we are 1 injury or regression away from seriously lacking again. it also doesnt help our cause that our DL rotation is not appearing to be nearly as good as we expected.

I guess the question is - do you trust Kruger that much? The Browns arent exactly brimming with pass rush talent, but have no use for Kruger. After 1 good year in Cleveland he has seriously declined to where he did almost nothing last year. Granted, that was without much talent around him, but still.

Plus, he's purely an outside rusher and i dont know who you take off the field to get him snaps. Doom is already primed for primarily pass rushing down snaps and i wouldnt put kruger above him. I do trust Suggs to be who we think he is.

I dont see Kruger as any more of a known commodity at this point than ZDS or Judon, and the latter provide much more upside.

Granted this is a dead convo at this point since Kruger has signed with NO, but chiming in late.

I wouldn't even say that.  It wouldn't surprise me if we get offers of 6th or 7th round picks for him, but I don't think we really have much interest in moving him.  Admittedly, this is coming from someone who doesn't believe the Ravens hold Josh Johnson in that high of regard.  I get the sense that the team really likes having a backup QB that has a similar skill set/playing style to Flacco.  I think they've become more concerned with staying competitive if Flacco has to miss a couple of games, and I think they feel they can best achieve that with a guy that can slot right in and not have to change much.

Glad im late on this thread.

This isnt 2012. Browner and Kruger havent been effective players in a long time. I think Kruger was getting a name recognition, former Raven boost. The dude literally had maybe 2 quality years of play, the majority of which was in a situational role. And he's been getting progressively worse. He peaked in the 2012 playoffs, had one more pretty good season, and has done nothing since.

Browner was the worst graded DB by PFF last year. NE and Seattle, who routinely get DBs playing far above their talent level suggests were both happy to walk away from this guy. What exactly are we going to do with him? Hes better than Wright? Based on what exactly?

Krugers only like 2 years  younger than Doom anyways, and far less productive. ZDS had more sacks in the final 3 games of last year than Kruger did through 16. Judon has more this pre-season than Kruger had over 16 games last year. I'll roll with upside going forward than risking losing one and giving their snaps away to nostalgia.

Thankfully Oz doesnt bring in guys based on their name, prior achievements or nostalgia.

He did choose Miami though, which had the same issues, and they offered the most money. But as far as Kruger goes, he just isn't gonna turn down that money. Yeah Kruger failed to become a 3 down defender, but It's up to the browns to make the evaluation and decide if he can make that leap, they overestimated and then overpaid, he tried, it didn't work, and he wasn't as effective as he once was because they're trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

I understand both sides of the argument, but I'm not gonna hold it against Kruger as a pass rusher because a team overpaid him.

But as a 3 down player, Kruger was still in on pass rushing situation and the past 2 years didnt do that well either.

I could see the argument that having to play a full time role hurts his productivity as a pass rush specialist, as we saw with doom last year, but Doom was still a far more productive pass rusher at an older age, playing with an injury, and worse equipped physically to play the run than Kruger has been for a couple years now.

I think Kruger is a guy who was motivated to improve and play well based on his situation in Baltimore, flourished once used properly and given the opportunity, earned himself big money, and has declined ever since.

Maybe he does have something left in the tank as a specialist.... but i dont think its any more of a sure thing than ZDS.

I don't think Mallet would necessarily flourish, but I could see him getting them to the playoffs. He's pretty decent at getting balls into tight windows in intermediate routes due to this arm strength. I think he'd work well throwing to a receiver like Treadwell, and have enough of an arm to take advantage of Diggs' speed.

Stranger things have happened but I just can't see Mallett taking anybody to the post season if he has to play 16 weeks.

He can't handle expectations of a starting QB. It's all mental thing with him.

Well we talked about either Mallett or Josh Johnson to the Cowboys.... and its Jerrod Johnson they sign.

Interesting.

I think the Cowboys are all in on Dak Prescott. For them it's just a matter of finding a backup to him.

Oh absolutely... and they should be. Hes looked very good.

And Jerrod Johnson may just be a signing to give them someone to take reps in the 4th preseason game, but found it odd they signed him of all people.

Thought that was interesting too, although I realize he'll be cut in the next couple of days. Of all the QBs available though, they picked the one that was so bad that he got benched... in a preseason game.

Mallett was on the street for good reason and he's not someone I would rely on by any stretch of the imagination. If the Vikes or anyone offered anything worthwhile I'd jump on it. I'm rooting for Johnson to earn our back up job as Mallett is not a guy I want to count on.

Now if im the Vikes I'm going after someone like Mccown way before Mallett.

I don't think we can consider cuts from any team. We don't have enough freaking spots for all of our guys. We must have the deepest team in the league, every position group except for the secondary and OT is ridiculously deep. Even if we lack high caliber starting play from our dl.

Yeah. It really seems like there's going to be a lot of tough calls, and I'm sure other teams are watching the Ravens' cuts since some of them can be good backups elsewhere.

I think if a kick returner is cut they would consider him. It's kind of a shame that you have to tie-up a roster spot solely to KR, but so far I'm not comfortable with anyone I've seen (other than maybe Dixon, who is hurt). We saw 1 return by Moore today and he looked good, but I think that's his only one of the preseason to my memory.

He was successful part time in college but his coach pulled him because he was too important to risk to injury

I wouldn't fill out your "You Pick The Team" quite yet when Hester is in the building.

You can fill it out as much as you need.

Very interesting. Could camp have lost his spot last night with that awful gaffe? I thought he was a lock now I'm not so sure.

I saw Kenny Bell was cut by The Buccs. I don't think he should be sign to The Ravens 53 man squad but he was one of my favorite receivers in the 2015 draft . He could be a solid options for The Ravens practice squad and he could probably somewhat help The  Ravens corners get prepared for Sammy Watkins since they both have the same height and  are speedy receivers.

Not certain how or whether he'd fit, but Ryan Davis was a surprise release in my eyes.

One of my favorites.  Just seemed to fall down the depth chart in Jacksonville.

I've been rooting for him as well. They attempted to convert him into an LB for whatever reason. I know that Gus Bradley's Sam isn't traditional, so the switch was likely closer to what Frank Clark underwent in Seattle, but I thought that Davis was at his best as a DT/DE nickle rusher with a hand in the dirt. I expect him to latch on somewhere else.

I think that picking up a player cut by another team should depend on whether the Ravens would be a better team with that player than with  the player they would cut to make room on the roster.

I think pass rusher or quality corner is the only thing we should even think about looking at. Kruger would've been viable imo but nothing else.
