[News] Crockett Gillmore Feels For Benjamin Watson, But Isn't Sweating The Loss

33 posts in this topic

The Ravens have good depth at tight end, except two others (Dennis Pitta and Maxx Williams) are also injured. Quarterback Joe Flacco said it's going to be tough on the offense without the field-stretching tight end.

Im not worried bout TEs.. just because Pitta&Williams should be ready week 1. Atleast Pitta, a broken finger doesnt take no more then a month to heal. That happened like 2 weeks ago, 2more weeks of rest is week 1.
So if you have Pitta,Gillmore,Maxx..then Waller come week 5..thats not bad

I think they'll definitely be fine without him. I feel really bad for him but I think pitta and Williams will be ready by week one. I'd also go as far to say Daniel Brown hits the PS and they can bring him up just in case. I mean thats just until week 5 when wallers off suspension then you have a lot of depth again.

Why has there been nothing reported about Maxx Williams' "undisclosed" injury? We traded up in the second round for him, and he had a pretty good rookie season for a TE, despite being one of the youngest players in the league. He could end up being a major impact player this year or in the future, and we've heard nothing about him.

Only a matter of time before Gillmore gets injured too, some guys just cant shake the bug.

Maybe some guys play harder than others.

The issue with Pitta's finger is that specialists think he could easily re-injure it worse which could require surgery. That would be a much longer recovery time and could mess with the mobility/strength long term.

So glad you mentioned Daniel Brown. I really want to see this guy catching more passes. Although I have to disagree with you about us "being fine without him". They signed him for a very important reason. Because Flacco needs an immediate & reliable target. We had Gillmore, Maxx, and Boyle all last season. As good as they are they are much better as a 2nd option during those times when you catch the defense off guard. Even flacco said that this will hurt. To be frank, we really don't have a playmaking TE right now.

I always liked the idea of letting the young TEs grow. Watson was more than likely only going to be on the team this year. Watson has better route running and better hands, but Waller and Gilmore have more speed and size. Having 2 6'6" TEs with good speed is a tough cover for safeties and linebackers. Brown runs like a wide out. Pitta may also be in the mix at some point. I think the young guys may surprise some people.

Its true crockett is right we were fine last year and we will be ok this year its ironic bc like ozzie said he brought in watson to help the young guys learn how to avoid injuries but for him to be injured on the first play was not what any expected. However now that crockett is healthy and max may come back first I think they would fill the void of one and 2 respecitively while pitta heals and both waller and boyle are suspended and daniel will head to waivers and hopefully ps

It's Darren Waller's lucky day when Watson was injured. He'll be added to the active roster after he serves his suspension without a doubt now. Pitta, Gillmore and Williams can hold down the fort and Waller will be insurance against injury.

Thats a good way of looking at it glass half full..although he def would have helped a ton he also would have stunted the growth of our younger guys. We've got some playmakers ready in the bullpen that are young and hungry so  this is their time to step up. Plus pitta will be ready by week 1 and his rapport with Joe is like no other. Hurts but this injury can def be absorbed.

I'd say its butlers lucky day. Not only did he have another huge game with almost 2 tds to prove himself once again- Watson going down just opened up the 53rd spot for a 7th receiver. we will find a place for waller come week 5 too though.

Waller was going to make the team no matter what, he was the most consistent TE in the pre-season games so far, and his 4.40 speed is no match for LBers, or safeties....

This injury is huge. We're back to how we were last year with respect to TEs. The only thing that can make a difference is if Pitta can come back and not have problems with his hip.
Remember they signed Watson because they couldn't count on getting Pitta back. To say we're fine with our depth without Watson and a healthy Pitta, is not realistic. None of these other TEs is impressive enough. Gilmore is often injured, however he is a warrior but not a field stretcher. Maxx is not athletic; doesn't create separation with consistency. Daniel Brown might be the one that can create problems with the opposing defense, but he is learning the position and so is Waller.
Hope Pitta stays healthy.

Gilmore is correct... which begs the question as to why we signed an expensive 35 year old tight end?

Gilmore is not correct. Think back to last year and the production at the TE position. We never had a consistent production from that position, and Trestman uses TEs in his schemes a lot. Gilmore is just trying to rally his teammates.

well we the fans are worried because crockett is inconsistant and max williams is more brittle than tony romo, and every one else is suspended bcause theyd rather take peds then earn it the hard way in the gym. RIP ben watson season

If Gilmore and Williams are healthy we will be fine. Once Pitta returns, hopefully soon, we will be in very good shape. I expect all of these guys to be ready by week one.
Waller will be a welcome return. I think he can be a game changer regardless of whether you call him a WR or TE. Daniel Brown may even be a decent player. that can take some reps.
We don't really know whether Watson's loss will affect the team to any great degree but it is unfortunate.
I'm surprised they didn't release Boyle despite how well he was playing. Getting suspended for 10 games is just so dang stupid I can't believe Harbaugh even wants him around.
The truth is that TE was the position with the best quality depth on the team. I'm not sure how much Watson would have played if everyone is healthy.

As long as Orr does not go down I'm not worried too much but if Orr or CJ goes it's going to be a long season.

Certainly an unfortunate break form Watson. I was excited to see how he fit into the offense. Waller will have a good opportunity to see more playing time and seems to be finding his stride at TE. IMHO Pitta will be back no later than week 2-3. Might see more 3 & 4 wide out sets the first couple games but no deal breaker. They have the RB's that can catch the flat and under neath routes.

I really like how he create's match up nightmares at TE and can swing out to WR and still give DB's a challenge with the speed and height. When he's back from suspension, he better come ready to seize his opportunities.
