The good the bad and the ugly Lions version

It was GREAT seeing Ngata back. No doubt he'll retire a Raven.

Ngata: "It was pretty cool. I think, definitely, want to be back when I’m done with the Lions.” #Ravens

Feel bad for B.Watson and Dixon on brighter notes Flacco looked good and Wallace looked good and what about the 2 rookie O-Line starters? It looks promising Suggs was stopping the run and getting after it. This year could be a great year.

Him and Boldin will definitely be back in    B-more when it's all over.

I'd imagine Boldin would be more likely to go to ARI

Very possible. His departure was laced with a lot of emotional proclamations (Bouldin: "I will retire if I'm traded...the Ravens are my last stop..., etc.). That was personal for him. I haven't heard him make any statements of reflection regarding that level of emotional resolution since. Arizona was his 1st team...but I hope he retires here. He became legendary here.

I only see him going back because it was his first team and they drafted him.

Yeah, he and Fitz were considered to be the "dream tandem" and despite winning a SB with the Ravens his best play and most consistent play was with the Cards. If I recall correctly I think he felt slighted that Fitz garnered so much attention(and the $) and that's what made him leave.

Well, he got traded, but yes, I'd imagine he'd want to be the man after his incredible rookie season, only to see Fitz come in at number three overall.

I could be wrong, but I think he requested the trade.

I'm not entirely sure. I just remember my brother was super shocked he got traded.

Speaking of Q, he looked pretty shocked last night when CJ attacked him the way he did while almost stripping the ball.  lol

Classic moment. One of the best game highlights. The passing of the leadership baton.

The combo of CJ and Orr will be lethal. They both were flying around making plays.

It's crazy how Orr is impressing me yet nobody seems to notice him. I think he's had one TFL per game.

CJ was less impressive but on the replay he had very good coverage.

Feeling very confortable about those two.

Here's how I scored Ronnie Stanley vs the Lions:

33 Plays

29 Blocks

2 Missed

5/6 pressure (1/2 + 1/3)

0 QH

0 Sacks

0 Penalties

27.33 points

Raw score: .83

Adjusted score: .89 (In this case only adjustment is .06 for difference between Ansah/other assignments and replacement level)

Grade: A (.87 is A- at tackle)

He was backed up by Ansah (Q1, 12:15) for a pressure shared 3 ways with Wagner and Lewis.  On the following drive, he and Lewis failed to negotiate a stunt and were both backed into Flacco causing a hurried throw (Q1, 8:02).  On both pressures he stayed between Flacco and his assignment while giving ground.  As I have it scored, he now has 3 partial pressures allowed  (1.33 total) in 80 scored snaps and has not allowed either a sack or QH.  That's more than 1 full game and an A overall.  He didn't have a highlight run block, but that's about the worst thing I can say about him.

My piece on the offensive players will post tomorrow on RSR.  The piece on the defense is up now if you are interested:

I asked this before and I'm not sure if you saw, but how would you have graded out Jimmy

I left Smith off the list, because he's a sure starter.  Here's what I noted:

1. The DPI (Q1, 9:38) was a little ticky-tack, but costly.  It looked worse at the stadium than it did on the TV replay angles, because he clearly did not look back for the ball and made contact with the receiver.

2. I liked his gamble for the PD/INT (Q1, 0:43), but the throw was perfect and the receiver made the toe tap in bounds.  Good play, bad result.

3. He made the first contact on the 1-yard FB screen L to Burton (-5 + 6 YAC, Q2, 12:58) and got primary tackle credit.  Good play, but I look at good run defense more than a play on a pass.

4. He took advantage of the edge set by Correa to make a tackle for no gain (Q2, 2:48).  Again, good play versus the run is not why Smith is so well paid.

He wasn't tested often in 32 snaps (that's good news), so combined with the above I still have trouble giving an unqualified positive to it.

Smith's performance in 2016 is a little like Pascal's wager (on the existence of God).  We have to hope he'll be there, because there simply is not another option.

Boldin was effectively released due to his cap number when he and the Ravens were unable to agree on a lower salary.  The 6th round pick was a small amount of salvage value from the 49ers.

If memory serves, the Ravens used the selection to take Kapron Lewis-Moore.

We were discussing his trade from AZ to the Ravens.

The Good: Joe looked like his old self out there and it seems that his knee injury looks to be behind him. It looks like Stanley and Lewis can protect his blind side. This is a big relief.

The Bad: Wright as a starting cornerback scares me. I have not been all that impressed with him this preseason and Jimmy Smith has not been very shutdown in preseason. With all the weapons the Steelers have at WR, and our lack of pass rush (yeah I know Suggs and Dom have not been back on the field together yet) I see this as a potential problem. We just can't seem to get off the field on third down and many times it is third and really long.

The Ugly: Losing Ben Watson to an Achilles for the season when he just trips over his own feet and is not even touched is very disappointing. I really thought the new grass field would have stopped many of these freaky injuries. I pray Dixon's MRI today gives us good news that he will be ok.

He didnt trip over his own feet. He blew out his achilles as soon as he pushed off to run, causing him to fall.

The grass field is not going to help in the prevention of a ruptured achilles.

I'm with you on this. Orr has been super solid and if he proves better at coverage than Mosley he could turn out to be our 3 down ILB.

It was dropped. Just clarifying for Filmstudy who thought we were speaking of his departure from the Ravens.  And Q originally came up in the convo from CJs "attack" on him, he plays for the Lions, so yeah, it wasn't far of topic.

Orr played like his hair was on fire! The intensity is contagious and exactly what has been missing, and what we need. I hope Terrell stays healthy, seems to be in tip top shape and ready to rock. Nobody fires up the squad like Siz.

The WRs played great. Remember the days of Torrey Smith and Jacoby Jones? Dark times.

Dark times? Those two are HUGE reasons for that historic 2012 season.

I really enjoy these reports, especially at this time of year.

Your assessment of Tavon is encouraging. I've been pulling for him from Day 1 and it's great to see him quickly adjust to the pro level of play.
