Wow this thread is unbelievable. You are trying to stack a rookie Stanley who isn't even close to Michael Oher in natural ability against the likes of Von Miller? That literally makes me LOL

Natural ability doesn't always equal success.  Vernon Gholston, Tommy Streeter, Ryan Leaf, JaMarcus Russell, a

Art Brown, Michael Oher... should I keep going?  Some of the best or most talented athletes can't pull it off because they have no idea what to do in the field or their mind isn't in it.

I wish people would stop calling each other names but then again I remember what I was like when I was a school yard bully. In the meantime I'm not intimidated!

When Doom, ZDS, Maxx, Dixon, Perriman, SSR, Urschel, Williams, Pitta, and even freaking Elam return... Yes.. That's a lot of talent

I know everybody loving butler but one play that stood out to me - was his catch on 3rd n about 7 - caught it but was tackled immediately- came up short n we went for it on 4th down first qtr - I didn't think he set it up well at the top of his route to create the separation for yac.

Who is butler competing with for snaps - intermediate, short stuff - competing with Steve smith, Aiken, camp, Wallace

i know everybody is saying we take 7 receivers but given our depth and options - I really don't think we need an extra player there - I think we would rather take another DB or LB, ochi flashed

I'm wavering on this myself. On the one hand, Butler as a 7th WR seems like such a luxury with Aiken ahead of him as an outside possession receiver, but Butler just seems too talented to cut. I think Butler could be a perfect successor to Aiken once he leaves as a UFA, but keeping him as a 7th WR for a year might be too difficult.

A laundry-list of players I noticed for week 3. I chose not to comment on a few guys, but this post is already verging on tl;dr as it is lol.

Terrance Brooks: Still seems to be the master of the almost-play, almost having an INT today. Also had a bad missed tackle on a RB in the first half, which allowed him to escape for a very long gain.

Sheldon Price: Seems like a very solid outside corner who maintains close coverage. I'm sure Ozzie will keep him on speed-dial if a corner goes down mid-season.

Will Davis: I think he's safely on the 53-man roster at this point and probably active every game if healthy. He has been around his man most plays this preseason. I really liked his effort to help stop a bubble screen for basically no gain today (pushed his blocker back, slowed the play, allowed Judon to make the tackle on the ball-carrier)

Julian Wilson: This is my first time noticing him, but he made a nice effort to help stop one of Detriot's quick screens by pushing his defender into the receiver to deny the outside lane. Also made a sound tackle on another quick pass. He's practice-squad bound.

Anthony Levine: Made a big play with an INT as he dropped into coverage in front of Boldin just in time. He is going to be difficult for opposing offenses to account for and read pre-snap, since he is such a dynamic player. Rarely do you get a LB who can switch seamlessly between safety and corner. He might satisfy all those draftnicks who wanted Myles Jack.

Chris Carter: I think we can assume at this point that his game 1 performance was a deviation from the norm, since we haven't seen much from him since then, and his name hasn't been mentioned in practice.

Matthew Judon: He was beating veteran starting OT Riley Reiff for pressures on multiple plays, including a forced fumble. He also shows good hustle to chase-down plays and make clean-up tackles, as he did on a couple occasions today. He needs to improve his ability to maintain his lane and not get pushed outside of the play, and he needs to improve his coverage skills, but I think we have a future starter in Judon once he gets some experience.

Victor Ochi: Recorded a sack. Hoping to see more in the final preseason game, since the reports from practice have been positive. I think another team picks him up after we cut him, which disappoints me.

Michael Pierce: If he does not make the 53-man roster, some other team will pick him up. In all 3 games so far he has collapsed the pocket and greatly affected the opposing run-game. Could be a NT of the future if B.Williams leaves as a UFA.

Willie Henry: After a pretty great game 1 of the preseason, I think he's played his way off of the 53-man roster and safely onto our PS. He was not very disruptive today. Pierce has looked much more worthy of a roster spot.

Brent Urban: With tree branches for arms, he's going to get a lot of snaps at the 5-tech even if he isn't the pocket-collapser he was touted to be in recent seasons. Also, was it Urban who blocked/tipped that missed FG?

Jeremy Butler: You've probably already seen/heard about him from everyone else already. Hope he makes it.

Mike Wallace: Surprisingly useful as a possession receiver. He could be in for a big year.

Ryan Jensen: Continues to get pushed back too easily at times, as he was today on a few plays, but I like his versatility and am happy to have him as depth.

Ryan Mallett: Mallett sealed the deal for that backup job over Johnson today with a better performance. Mallett made some nice throws, though he did miss a wide-open Moore for a TD in the first half (settled for a FG) and missed a throw to Chris Matthews on 3rd down.

Josh Johnson: Johnson was not very accurate today, but I am still hopeful someone trades a conditional 7th for him (better than nothing).

Kenneth Dixon: I'll let others talk about him; he was awesome and I hope he's okay.

The Watson injury was unfurtunate but not damning. The TE core should be able to absorb the injury.

Losing Watson's leadership and locker room presence leaves a hole that I'm not sure can be filled by anyone we have. I'm not saying it spells doom, but he will be missed.

My notes on the defense will post this morning on RSR, but I want to highlight a couple of players who don't seem to be getting any love for their pressure.

Brent Urban had a big game using his height in the pass rush.  He flushed Stafford once with a hand up in his face.  He knocked a pass back to him that doesn't count as a PD, because the pass was completed to Stafford for a loss of 9.  He also had a PD/QH combo which fell incomplete and was signaled as tipped by the official, but did not get recorded that way in the Gamebook.  He played 26 snaps total.

Henry also had 2 pressures and 1 QH as I scored it in just 16 snaps.

The Ravens had Webb and Lewis sit, so Brooks played the entire game at safety and looked pretty bad with 2 missed tackles (31 extra yards).

Levine, the ultimate utility player, did not play any dime, but moved to safety to plug a hole after moving to nickel for a similar emergency last week.  During the regular season, I expect he'll play dime, which I think best matches his skill set.  However, I am fearful that since Elam's injury, the Ravens don't have an obvious replacement for him at dime if he gets hurt or Pees decides he needs Levine more at another position.

I think one positive for me is the aggressive mentality to go get the turnover. Jimmy played off of Marvin Jones and completely attacked the ball for a near interception (if the ball was thrown slightly more inside, it's a pick), which is something the Ravens sorely missed.

CJ Mosley nearly stripped Boldin of the ball in the early goings against the first team offense. Aggressive mentality that the Ravens really missed last year.

On the down side, Weddle whiffed on a tackle that Every.Single.Safety.Makes. and that's no bueno.

There is definitely more swarming in the D and I like it. I also like seeing Pees on the sidelines rather than the booth. A move I believe should have been made after the 2012 season once Ray & Ed were both gone.

Pees is still doing the old conservative 3rd and long calls and we can't get off the field. Hoping that is a product of it being preseason and doesn't continue into the season.

I don't think the calls are conservative. I think that's purely a product of preseason, Suggs making his debut, no Doom, no Z. Smith, and no B. Williams, as far as this game goes.

What did you think of Jimmy Smith's performance? I thought he's been steadily improving each and every week.

Let me state the facts in real terms. No matter how we like to slice and dice it, yes we won the game by 3 touchdowns but the facts are , our first team looked ridiculous. 37 yards rushing? Wallace --35 yards, Forsette--got nothing, we have no TE, we got no sacks, we had no tackle for loss, we had virtually the same team we put out there last year. This is the new look NFL and we don't match up!!!

Differing perspectives make for interesting conversation.

wassup wizard,

I think we do have a good team,

our only weakness imo is

   1. our DC, can he dial up plays and be aggressive not to mention keep our players in position to play to their strength,

2.possibly having 2 rookies on the blind side is scary but stanley looks ok and I do like lewis at guard (if it works, then they will get better with time)

   3. then we have to account for murphy I am sorry Mr. Murphy, he shows up anywhere and everywhere

murphy law is real , injuries, accidents, just what ever can happen will happen,

I am of the few who have high expectations for the season, if this is SSS last season then lets make it a season,

if harb wants to be viewed in the top echelon of HC's well this is a season to do it,

Are there any Judon highlights of this preseason anywhere?  I can't find any on BR.com, and missed every time he made a play:(.  Excited for that young man.

The Good: Joe looked like his old self out there and it seems that his knee injury looks to be behind him. It looks like Stanley and Lewis can protect his blind side. This is a big relief.

The Bad: Wright as a starting cornerback scares me. I have not been all that impressed with him this preseason and Jimmy Smith has not been very shutdown in preseason. With all the weapons the Steelers have at WR, and our lack of pass rush (yeah I know Suggs and Dom have not been back on the field together yet) I see this as a potential problem. We just can't seem to get off the field on third down and many times it is third and really long.

The Ugly: Losing Ben Watson to an Achilles for the season when he just trips over his own feet and is not even touched is very disappointing. I really thought the new grass field would have stopped many of these freaky injuries. I pray Dixon's MRI today gives us good news that he will be ok.
