[News] Late For Work 8/25: On Same Day Devin Hester Asks Teams To Call, Ravens Say Returner Job Is Open

48 posts in this topic

We’ll finally get a better idea of the running back rotation. Lions’ Darius Slay will ask Steve Smith Sr. for his jersey. Only one Raven landed on the ESPN top 100 list. Ravens are short on healthy defensive backs. Ray Lewis is featured on the ‘Cigar Aficionado’ cover.

Camp to start as returner but have a plan as history suggests that he will last for a certain period of time. NO to Hester.

Hester would be a pretty good option IMO. He not only can return punts and kick-offs but he can run routes as a receiver also. That's what he did in Atlanta. As for making room for him, just cut a often injured slot receiver that has yet to stay healthy or really produce.

Give Moore a shot at the PR/KR duties.  If Perriman is healthy week one, it will probably be hard for Moore to get on the field with Wallace and Perriman ahead of him.

“This is looking more like the Ravens' situation in 2008, coach John Harbaugh's first season. Le'Ron McClain, Ray Rice and Willis McGahee all took turns getting the ball in what became a successful combination for the Ravens but a frustrating one for fantasy football owners.

Which led to McClain selfishly asking for more carries.  He was wearing a t-shirt in camp/practice that had "more carries for McClain" on it.  Don't quote me on the exact verbiage.

I honestly can't think of one single realistic reason for even entertaining the idea of reaching out for Hester...

"five defensive backs were sidelined for Wednesday's practice due to injuries. The list includes cornerbacks Kyle Arrington (concussion), Maurice Canady (hamstring) and Jerraud Powers (undisclosed), and safeties Matt Elam (knee) and Kendrick Lewis(undisclosed)."

I am trying to figure out which of these people actually constitutes any worrying. Arrington and Lewis were on the team last year and were the worst in the league. I mean these guys are atrocious. The Ravens didn't pick up Elam's option, this is his last year anyway and he is injured, I don't see wasting a roster spot on him when we clearly need additional bodies in the secondary. Powers was eaten up in the first two preseason games, was always behind and Davis, Levine, my grandmother, etc... just about anybody else could do a better job. Canady showed some skills but is a rookie and will end up on the practice squad so other than just having warm bodies around, I don't see where the loss of any of these guys is an actual loss. If we are relying on these guys, we better hope our pass rush gets to the qb and quick or teams cut some good secondary guys when they go to 53.

firstly,i'd say,no,the ravens should have a player on their roster to find a guy to return punts,no need. secondly, only 1 on the top 100 list isn't fair because alot of our guys were hurt, they should still be on the list,i thought it was funny to see in the new nfl power rankings,we were 23rd,but then went on to say, this team should still be playing in january if they stay healthy,so doesn't that really say we do have more than 1 player on the top 100 list on the roster? not even WEDDLE? he wasn't hurt last year,we shall see!

I know the said that roster flexibility is an issue but ... at this point... Hester is more reliable then Camp and Camp will not break the top 45WR behind SSS, Wallace, Perriman, Aiken and CMoore- I know that Camp is younger but for what we are going to ask him to do.... IDK... Hester may be a bigger weapon and for sure a more reliable weapon!

No thanks. Absolute waste of a roster spot for a has-been at a position that isnt even a big factor anymore. The answer is in house and the answer is Campanaro. If he gets injured then you go to the bullpen and roll out Webby...unless Reynolds proves himself on the PS  and clears waivers in the first place.

I thought of Hester when he first came on the market, but quickly decided no thanks. Why would you give a long in the tooth one trick pony who's best years are clearly behind him a valuable roster spot? Sounds exciting when you first hear the name, but when you examine the situation closer, you realize its not really adding anything beneficial to the team. I agree with the coaches: our return guy is already on the team, he just needs to step forward and grab the job.

I'd rather have a healthy Camp. I thought he's looked really good when he's been healthy- definitely better than Hester at WR.

Since Campanaro is always getting injured at WR, maybe reserve his role to ONLY returner and very limited offensive snaps until he can improve durability. There has to be someone among the other remaining receivers and DBs who can field a punt and run a few yards and fall down if he goes down.

Camp would see the field more than Hester would. We would literally sign him for one reason and that is to return kicks. We have to many positions where we need to keep some guys that are valuable to us, like TE, WR, and RB. I don't want to use a valuable roster spot on a guy who just returns kicks. No thanks. Let Camp/Dixon return kickoffs, and Camp handle punt return. Camp has talent at WR, while Hester would never see the field on offense.

True. Look what happened to McClain once he left here as well.

Exactly, if he would have cut out the antics he probably would have stayed and got a ring.  But he had to be selfish and got replaced by Vonte Leach.

From a coaching perspective, if a guy is healthy and available to go, then I am going to use him in whatever capacity I think helps the team win. I'm not going to use this player only for punt returns when he can help move the chains on 3rd down and really improve our offense because his durability is a question.

I'd be more worried about voodoo. I can just see Slay sprinkling some chicken blood over a jersey SSS has worn and uttering some chant from the Caribbean. The next thing we know SSS has both his legs fall off.

Really. Not even one? Maybe let's say because he's better than anyone we have on the roster.....

the only question here is "how much better" and "what do we have to give up"

Hester thanks for the offer but no thanks. We'll fair catch every punt and drive down the field!

I know your being absolutely sarcastic about this but in all honesty, I'd take that proposal over what we had last year. I wouldn't mind fair catching every punt if it means we don't fumble any of them or have penalties move us back some lol

Seriously how can Ray Lewis condone smoking by posing with a cigar on the cover of a magazine? I thought he had more self-respect than that.

Also to SSSR. DO NOT GIVE THIS MAN OR ANY, YOUR JERSEY. There is a gift store where he can go buy one like every other fan out there. It does really make you wonder his true intentions in this crazy world we live in.

I would love to get Hester to boost our special teams but that would mean we would have to keep 7 recievers SSS, Aiken, Perriman, Moore, Wallace, Campanaro, and Hester. That's a lot of speedy recievers in there. ?

The magazine is titled "cigar aficionado", so smoking a cigar would probably not be considered abnormal. By the way, last I heard cigars are still legal, so what's the big deal if ray wants to smoke one occasionally? I love it when people try to shove their morality down other peoples throats...let other's live the lifestyle they want, not how you think they should live.

I dunno why all the hatred for slay here, it strikes me as a respectful kind of gesture one where rivalries end at the end of a game and respect takes over from there. I'm pretty sure it's not a notch thing.

Who cares whether fantasy players are frustrated or not? The team's success is all that matters.

I find it so fascinating that most believe Flacco is not elite but he is always the center of elite-ness? We don't hear about Matt Ryan like this I wonder why?

Wanting a guys jersey is not disrespect but of high respect! It could be the same to wear some body elses number? Then also it could be question who are the other jerseys that he possess? Then we could take it from there?
