Okay, so we'll say the slotted bonus is at $15M (it's like $15.3M).

Are they trying to give him like $10M or are they trying to do it like $5M this year and $10M next year?

I believe the number they are trying to differ was 8-9 mil.  Also my point was less villainizing the Chargers. More why so many quickly jumping to villainize the player. This was before the details were even out. I don't understand why so many quickly trash the players and take the teams side in all these negotiations.

If it's a slotted system, how do the Chargers even offer less of a bonus in total money?

It's not the total money. It's cash payout. Actually listening to a lot of agents that's more of Abig deal to both the players and teams than I used to think it was.

But clarify.

They want to give him $8M now and $7M next year? Or they only want to give him $8M

Not sure if it's 8 and 7 but they want to split it 60-40 over two years and Bosa wants all up front.

I was just pulling out arbitrary numbers with the 8 and 7.

From what I read from a Bolts beat writer was that it would get paid out over the course of the 2016 season and the remainder would get paid out in April after the new fiscal year begins for the league.

Failing to see why that's a huge issue.

Ditto here. It all just sounds like he's pissed off being drafted by the Chargers. His mother's comment on "pulling Eli" may not mean anything but it can be taken as a hint as well.

The deferred money totally makes sense to me (I'm not paying a guy who isn't on my team) and the signing bonus, even if it's paid out over the entire contract, is still a life changing amount of money who didn't grow up rich, from what I can tell. It looks like Bosa grew up pretty middle class, so he's learned to live a relatively normal life without millions of dollars. Why can't he do it now?

Sign me up for the veteran minimum and I'd be glad to play a single season in the NFL.

Here in SD all the fans are blaming Bosa.

Im with you, i dont see what the big deal would be to wait another 9 months or so to get the rest of the bonus.  Its not like there is any way he wont get it, this is making both sides look bad imo.

Are other rookies getting their bonus all up front?

I'm sure a lot of rookies are, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's a huge deal to get it all at once (which would be made in payments over the course of the season, to my understanding.

brandt said he heard roughly half. He seemed to think if we're talking 8 million offer to defer 4. Bosa will take it. All will save face.

Anyone interested in contract stuff I strongly suggest listening to Andrew Brandt. He comes on the Ross tucker podcast every Wednesday. Former packers front office guy and agent so he is full of accurate info.

If they're trying to short him the $15M that Dante Fowler Jr got last year, then I understand. I wasn't aware that's what it was.

I agree with Bosa wanting the money up front like most top ten picks get, but now he's just kind of hurting himself by not getting in any practice. It'll look bad if he holds out and then looks sloppy on the field since he wasn't around for practice or the preseason games. If the Chargers really don't want to pay him, they could see if a team will trade a first round pick for him, since he's a top ten pick in this draft. There are some that could really use an edge rusher.

I will be surprised if the hold out goes into the regular season.

It's going to. Chargers are preparing for week one as if Bosa won't be available. As I said Week 10 is the deadline or he goes back into the Draft.

That would be insane

I'm unfamiliar with these types of things but say he does go back into the draft next year, what happens with San Diego's 3rd pick overall that they used on Bosa? Do they just lose it?

This could surely hurt Bosa financially considering I doubt he'd be a top 3 pick next year.

Yes, it would be like they never had 1st round pick in 2016. Not all is lost though - they can always draft him again.

I don't because the way I understood it, the Chargers wanted to do in the next fiscal year (March/April) instead of making payments over the course of the season like the other picks.

So, instead of getting it in 16 installments over until January and then it being done, it'd be 16 installments and then the rest up front two months later. I really don't understand that at all when you consider he wasn't some rich kid growing up who needs to continue his lavish lifestyle.

The deadline for him to be traded has already passed.   So either they get him signed by week 10 or they lost their 3rd pick in the draft because Bosa will be entered in the 2017  draft.   At this point,  it's hurting both sides a lot,  seems to be a pride thing now.  I really don't think it's about money because Bosa is prepared to go to next year's draft and there is no clue where he would be drafted.   If he goes in the 2nd round he loses a lot of money but it seems he's prepared to do that,  hence why this in my opinion is pride... Or ego and not money.

It'd be quite the dream scenario for him to go back into the draft and fall to the Ravens next year.

Your dream scenario or Bosa's / Ravens'? It sure isn't mine.

The Chargers issued a public statement on the negotiations...

I can't understand why he doesn't want to sign there... (sarcasm)?  The money is fine but note how the Chargers said nothing about deferments and offsets, which is the real hold up here.  I'm starting to see why so many players dislike SD.
