[News] Ronnie Stanley Quietly Chugging Toward Starting Job

20 posts in this topic

The Ravens’ No. 6 pick is the league’s top-graded rookie offensive tackle through the first two preseason games, per Pro Football Focus. He hasn’t allowed a single pressure. He’ll be blocking for quarterback Joe Flacco in a game for the first time Saturday.

After I read the article I decided to take a peek at what Laremy Tunsil was doing since the big hooha at the draft and because people said the Ravens erred by taking Stanley and not taking Tunsil. And actually, Tunsil is doing very well. He has gone 90 snaps and not allowed a single qb pressure. BUT, before anyone jumps the gun, Tunsil isn't an NFL left tackle, Miami chose to use Tunsil as a guard. Stanley has been nothing but perfect from his interviews, to his appearances, to what he does off the field, not to mention he has dominated as a left tackle on the field, oh, and did I mention singing in a chicken suit.

Tunsil got off to a rough start in Miami after the gas mask bong video, ended up in some fisticuffs, and I imagine because they didn't feel he was ready, they moved him to guard from his original left tackle position. He is doing quite well but typically guards don't get drafted in the vicinity of the draft that Tunsil was picked at.

So.... just looking at was has transpired since the names were called at the draft, to me it is a no-brainer, Ozzie was right, Stanley was by far the better pick of the two.

Honestly, is there even a competition for the starting LT position?  I thought it was a foregone conclusion that he was the day 1 starter the 1st day of TC.

I looked back over my scoring to see how exceptional it is to have not allowed a pressure in 47 graded snaps (a little more than 2/3 of a typical game).

In the past 3 seasons, Ravens tackles have had 7 such full games with less than 1 full pressure as I scored it:

Monroe (2013 Pit W7, 2014 Ten W10, 2014 Jax W15, 2016 SF W6)
Wagner (2014 NO W12)
Hurst (2014 TB W6, 2014 Cle W17)

The results have been terrific and I'm really excited about his future, but it's pretty clear from the data above we'll need more snaps to be convinced he's a Pro Bowl talent THIS season.

Ya. Tunsil will one day make the move to LT but my guess is they knew throwing him in there was gonna be a bit much to handle off the bat. After seeing Stanley show up dressed to the 9's for the draft and hearing him I could tell he had the character of a Raven. His play thus far has been excellent, but as always there's lots left to prove. Finding a LT that can start from day 1 and do well is a very rare thing to observe. Joe will be buying this mans dinner more than once this season, and his knees will thank him.

Exactly. I read the title and thought to myself "I thought Monroe was gone, who else is giving him competition??" Lol.

"Quiet" is what you want out of an offensive lineman. Of course, gotta see how it goes when the bullets are live. Before the draft, I thought for sure we were going to go defense ... but in retrospect, I can't imagine us drafting any other position than LT given we otherwise wouldn't have one.

Lets be honest, even if this guy was playing mediocre, he'd still be the starter LOL. What other choice do we have??

Yep ... mediocre would probably be good enough. If he proved to be completely unready for the role, we'd have to do something, but I'm not sure what.

Given the situation, I'd say he's on a short list only behind Flacco, Suggs and maybe Jimmy as being the among the teams most indispensable players.

If he can come out on top against Ansah, we can all sit back and relax regarding the LT position. I expect Stanley to be tested but still come out on top. Let me make a leap of faith prediction here that Stanley will make the pro bowl as a rookie!

We would've likely had to bite the bullet in the negotiations with long and waive that injury clause. That or we might have taken one in round 2 if we went defense round 1. Hindsight is 20/20 but really wish we could've gotten yannick in round 3 instead of kafusi..not really BC of the injury I just think he's the better player. Not trying to get too much off topic but how's Ramsey holding up in Jacksonville anyway? Regardless I'm happy with Stanley and think this kid will be a long term raven. Good attitude and seems to be very durable.

Whats cool is that both Stanley and Lewis could be starting LT and LG for years to come. Whats not cool is if we cant afford to keep them both.

its ridiculous to evaluate which one is better now. the have only played two preseason games. 28 snaps is nothing.

Brian Kelly's (Notre Dame HC) attitude about Stanley throughout his senior year and leading up all the way to the draft was that an NFL team could draft Stanley and not worry about the LT position for the next 10-12 years.

He was known at Notre Dame as an extremely smart student athlete, leader, superior physical player and very durable.

"Don't believe me...just watch."
