[News] Jeremy Butler And Chris Moore Fighting To Carve Out Roles

28 posts in this topic

Steve Smith Sr. and Breshad Perriman have made their returns to the field. But two receivers further down the depth chart – Butler and rookie Chris Moore – have been making plays in practice and games. Where do they fit into the mix?

Out of curiosity, has Butler tried his hand as a punt returner/kick returner?  If he hasn't, as a receiver with great hands its puzzling if they haven't put him back there in practice.

Might have been smart to keep Perriman on the PUP until game six or seven... Butler would certainly be more ready to contribute on opening day.

Perriman is no longer eligible for the PUP since been activated in practice. Only possibility for him would be IR and then we bring him back, which I doubt would happen.

I was kinda thinking along those lines also, but if Perriman is truly healthy then you need to put him on the field. Perriman brings a lot of talent and has the speed and moves that could equate to "elite" level if he can transfer them to the NFL. So if the Raven's trainers and doctors say he's ready to go, you have to play him. Moore will make the roster, although he may be one of those healthy scratches come game day. Butler is the one that really has me tied...he's shown he has good hands and ability, has a competitive fire, and can make nice plays. But do we keep seven WR's on the roster? Given the injury history of our current group, it would be nice to keep him if for no other reason than as insurance against a probable injury. While it is possible he could slide through waivers and we sign him to the practice squad again, I think he may be showing other teams that he can play in this league. So the Ravens have to weigh the decision about how much he can really help the team. A tough call, I hope they can find a spot for him.

Three WR sets would look dangerous:

Wallace, Aiken, SSS
Perriman, Moore, Camp

or 2 TE sets with
Watson & Crocket
or
Gilmore and MAXX
or even
Maxx and Juice. (eventually Waller)

(paired with two large WRs like Perriman and Moore...will be sick in the Red zone and short yardage situations)

all that and still have dual threat RB's coming out of the backfield. Trestman should be licking his chops and salivating over what this season could be!

Good hands, but lacks that burner speed you look for in a returner, plus not as agile as say a Campanaro, or even a Reynolds, Webb or Dixon. If the Raven's thought he could be a decent returner, he'd have been out there day one.

That being said, I meant to include Moore in my initial response. Can't deny his speed.

I believe what he meant was to NOT activate him at this time, but to LEAVE him on PUP.

I like your thinking here. Need great hands to be a returner.

i start to think the Ravens might go with 3 running backs (as usual, but contrary to what somebody proposes for this year) and 7 wide receivers.

Ahh, yeah re-read and you're correct. I agree with that mindset as well, but guess we can't really turn back now lol.

I also like this idea. Even if he isn't the fastest, a punt returner more than anything needs sure hands and to be able to read blocks well. Very few people are able to make the big returns all of themselves using speed.

I could also see Chris Moore being a punt returner if he can show good hands. Of course they can easily put Webby or SSSr. back there if needed.

At this point, Campanaro needs to prove he can stay healthy. If he does not do this, I believe Butler will make the grade, due to more upside and dependability and increased consistency. He has been working hard and it's starting to pay off now. I've been routing for Butler the last few years as I could see some play making ability in him. With the increase in consistency he continues to challenge for a roster spot. With no more WR projects, I strongly believe Butler makes the roster over Campanaro.

i take butler over camp any day he has proved him self over the last couple of years but ultimately i want to see flacco go for more than 4000 yards thats why he is not considered elite and has to throw for more than 30 td's with less than 10 interceptions i know he can do it

I would like to see Chris Moore as a returner. Saw him field kicks at the rookie practice and he looked pretty good.

Stats are for losers. It has been proven time and time again. Flacco doesn't need for anyone to call him "elite". He is a very confident person and doesn't need titles. Ravens fans shouldn't need those titles either. We all know what we have. Some teams would give their eye teeth to have a Flacco. Go Ravens.

We need to make room for Butler on the roster. Harbs talks about no more projects, guys need to step up and contribute. That's exactly what Butler has done. Improved every year he's been on the team, produced when called upon. He's not a burner, but he has nice size, hands, and he wants it.

And who's the odd man out at rb? I just can't see it. Much more reasonable to keep 4 rbs than 7 wrs...esp since 1 of the 6 can return kicks anyway.IMO cutting buck, forsett, dixon or west is just not an option..they are all far too valuable. I feel for butler but he really doesn't bring anything to the table that Aiken , sss or camp does. All possession receivers with reliable hands to move the chains. He's just not needed. Would actually make more sense if we did keep 7 for it to be Mathews- a tall redzone threat. It really does suck though BC believe me I like butler a lot. He will find a job somewhere.

How in the WORLD can Perriman be a lock? The guy has done NOTHING to make anyone think he could survive one quarter of preseason tackle NFL football let alone a regular season game and season without getting hurt. The Ravens need to admit they got burned by the guy and let him go. And Campanaro is a local boy makes good story but his body was not meant to play NFL football.

Butler has really progressed from last year, his route running is more crisp, and i don't recall him dropping anything thrown his way that was catch able...

hes a lock cuz he has 4.2 speed, 6'2, strong body, really good hands and never got hurt in college. The same reason he was a 1st round draft choice.

I think both Butler and Moore will make the 53 unless of course there is a legit injury not one of these hoax ones. Here's who I believe will be our WRs. SSS, Aiken, Wallace, Perriman, Campanaro, Butler and Moore.

Let Smith, Aiken, Wallace, Butler, Perriman (baby steps) be the top five WR, with Moore full time KR and sixth receiver to start. Moore and Butler can also play ST gunners. Camp won't make it through three games. Webb PR. With six WRs may be able to carry four TEs, but four tailbacks is highly unnecessary. West is a good, fast, powerful runner, but it seems he has no RB instincts. I don't know. Forssett, Allen (ST), Dixon (ST), Juice (ST). Watson, Pitta, Gilmore (ST), Williams (ST). Should at least enable them to carry eight solid OL.

Yeah, we're going to get rid of a #1 draft pick after only one year...Give the guy a chance. By your standards, I guess we should go ahead and cut Kaufusi because he's damaged goods and can't suit up. At least wait until the guy's played a game before rushing to judgement.

He's either joking  or just doesn't have much common sense.

I'm gonna absolutely love to see perriman light it up this year and see hundreds of fans walking back their previous  doubts and statements about him being a bust. Patience will pay off. This guy  has  the potential to become our version of dez and be a serious threat. He's not just a one trick pony like torrey either.
