The Turk is coming: Camp cuts and IR discussion

31 posts in this topic

Unfortunately, this will be the last week as a Raven for 15 players.  The roster has to be cut from 90 to 75 by Aug 30th.   Figured I would create a post for those who get cut or designated as IR.

I don't see any big surprises in the 1st round of cuts this year.  Think it will be a lot of the pure camp body types.  I think you could see someone like Arthur Brown or Kyle Arrington get the axe early to play it nice and give them a little extra time to find a job.

I suppose both would last through the 3rd preseason game. If somebody like Young were to get a significant injury in the 3rd preseason game, suddenly Arrington becomes more valuable.

I only floated Art Brown out there as a "name" guy who could get cut simply because I think the coaching staff is just completely done with him at this point.

Yeah all of these guys will last through the next game at least.  First cut down day is Tuesday, so I'd expect names to start trickling out on Sunday, or most likely Monday next week.

Does Keenan make it, or will he be relegated to the practice squad?

At this point, I would be very surprised if he made it.  It appears he is just not ready yet from the reports.  Hopefully, nobody will claim him and we can have him on our practice squad.

Chances Art Brown is among the first group of cuts?

Very high.

Like you said we will wait on arrington incase an injury occurs..

I'm interested in seeing Mathews in the game this Saturday. He's back on the feild after being injured foir a while. He was one of the guys I had actually being a surprise standout and making the roster, now its an extremely long shot. The only thing is we have so many receivers of the same stature who are all similar. He brought something different to the table being the tall redzone threat and could've became what we had hoped Marlon would. Havent heard his name much throughout camp but he did alright at the end of last season filling in. Perfect PS candidate in my eyes. If anybody deserves that last spot its butler. He has been fighting his tail off to make the team for years and keeps proving himself but just gets caught up in the numbers game. This year I think they give it to him.

I'm surprised "The Turk" has survived this age of political correctness. :)

Arrington seemed like such a good signing at the time, but for whatever reasons he just hasn't worked out. They may let him go early simply as a veteran courtesy.

I think he survives the first round. PS isn't established until after the cut to 53.

Yea. I think he'll be among the last cuts hoping that everyone else has filled their last minute roster needs and increasingly the likelihood that he passes waivers - not that i think theres a big danger of him being scooped up. Hes still very raw. But definitely a priority PS candidate.

Do you think they cut Jerrod Johnson, the 4th QB, prior to the last preseason game?

I suppose we could just roll with Mallett and Johnson in that game, but could be somewhat risky?

They pulled him from a preseason game because he was so ineffective.  His time here is done.  I wouldn't be surprised if Josh plays most of the game in a show of good faith to let him try to latch on elsewhere.

Pretty much with you except the top 3 they will wait on Elam until the last round, Kaufusi if he is done then maybe he could go in the 1st round. Taliaferro since he is on PUP can be stashed at the end because any injured player IR/PUP will not count against the 53. He would serve as insurance if we lost a RB during the 1st 6 weeks

They already said Kaufusi is done for the year, so he'll likely go on IR next week.  Tuesday is the first day where guys can be placed directly on IR without having to go through waivers, so he'll go then so they don't have to actually cut a healthy body they can use for the game on Thursday.

Same for Taliaferro.  He can officially be moved to the reserve/regular season PUP so he's no longer taking up a roster spot.

Don't see us keeping 3, so let each play significant time if nothing is determined at that point, I guess.  Also, gives them a chance to show what they have for other teams.

Right, my point was that its just somewhat risky to go into that game with only two active QBs for a preseason game. I'm not opposed to Mallett and Johnson splitting the reps, especially if there's actually a competition for the backup job.

Unless somehow Joe decides to play a series or two, then its a moot point.

I don't envy John or Ozzie.

I can't imagine being the guy to crush someone's dreams.

Why not keep three? Flacco showed us last season that he's not invincible. What if Mallett or JJ went down also? Koch would be throwing the football lol. Or maybe we activate Keenan from he PS if he indeed lands there. Idk, just thinking about it, I wouldn't mind keeping three active

It was his first major injury on a freak accident.  Don't keep 3 because these slots will be needed at other positions.  If he goes down season is basically done anyway.

Chances you take.  Even if you carry 3 on the roster, 1 of them is inactive for gameday.  That means if both of your active QBs get hurt, that's still Koch playing QB.  No sense in using a roster spot on a 3rd guy.

its always tough to predict the 53 man roster. But, this year seems so much more difficult because I can count at least 70 players that deserve a slot on the 53! Really tough on both the team and the players this year because no matter what we'll be letting go of a lot of really talented young players who may never get a shot in the NFL.

Yes exactly we only need 2. Most years since Joe has been here it has been 2QBs if we are already carrying and extra RB or TE or both we can not afford a 3rd QB. Also I'm guessing we keep an extra CB this year after the last 2 years which means some other positions will have fewer spots. If we keep 4RBs plus Juice plus 4TEs with the usual 8 OL with 2 QBs you are already at 25 of your 53 not including the wolfpack which leaves 25 spots for D, and that is before decisions on Waller and Boyle.

The fact that I only recognize half of the names you listed, I'd say you're probably spot on. LOL

I for one agree with you. We don't need 4 RBs that are a dime a dozen and can be signed right off the street in a pinch.

At one point they had it where you could dress 46 but only for the 3rd QB. I found info on that but the article was dated 2011 and there were several but I couldn't find nothing to see if they changed this rule or not.

It's been changed since then.
